Use Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions if you already run Playwright Test and want visual checks, repository-managed baselines, and failures reported directly by your tests. Choose Percy when hosted visual review and managed baselines solve a workflow problem for your team—and configure an explicit CI gate if unapproved visual changes must block a build. Percy can work with existing Playwright screenshot assertions, so evaluating it need not mean rewriting every test.
What is the difference between Playwright and Percy?
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() captures a page or element, saves a reference image on an initial run, and compares later captures against that reference. The snapshots are stored as files associated with the tests, commonly in a separate snapshots directory in the repository. Your team reviews and updates those files as part of code changes.
Percy is BrowserStack’s hosted visual-testing and review service. Its Playwright integration can send screenshots from existing toHaveScreenshot() assertions to Percy, where visual differences are presented for review. The capture can remain in your Playwright tests while the baseline and approval workflow move to a hosted service.
They therefore differ less in whether they can take screenshots than in who owns the baselines, where differences are reviewed, and how visual approval affects CI.

How the workflows compare
| Decision | Playwright native screenshots | Percy with Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline and storage | Reference images are local files associated with tests and are commonly committed to the repository. | Percy manages a hosted base build and review workflow. In supported configurations, committed Playwright snapshots can seed a new project’s baseline. |
| Rendering consistency | Images can vary with operating system, browser version, fonts, hardware, settings, and headless mode. Playwright advises generating and comparing images in the same environment. | BrowserStack describes hosted comparisons as consistent across test machines; details depend on project type and setup. |
| Reviewing a difference | A changed image fails the assertion. Developers inspect the difference and update the local snapshot when the change is intentional. | Changes are reviewed and approved or rejected in Percy. With the documented drop-in integration, local assertions pass and the visual verdict is handled in Percy. |
| CI behavior | A screenshot mismatch fails the Playwright check by default. | Add a Percy wait or failure gate if unapproved changes should fail CI. A passing test command alone does not establish that the screenshot matched its baseline. |
| Setup | Requires Playwright Test and a process for generating, reviewing, and updating snapshots. | Requires a Percy project and token, the CLI and Playwright SDK, configuration, and attention to documented version prerequisites. |
| Good fit | Teams that prefer code-adjacent files and can manage baseline review and a consistent rendering environment. | Teams that want hosted visual review and accept a service dependency and an explicit approval and CI-gating workflow. |

When native Playwright screenshot testing is enough
Start with native assertions when your team wants visual checks within its existing Playwright Test suite and is comfortable storing baseline images alongside the code. An initial run creates a reference image; subsequent runs compare against it. When a change is expected, review the image change and update the snapshot deliberately rather than treating every mismatch as a defect.

Keep image generation and comparison in the same controlled environment. Playwright cautions that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” The quote is from the Playwright visual-comparisons documentation. Stable CI images and controlled browser versions reduce avoidable noise, but do not make rendering differences impossible.
Playwright provides controls that help isolate meaningful changes, including pixel-difference thresholds, custom stylesheets for hiding or normalizing volatile elements, animation handling, full-page capture, masking, and clipping. These controls address particular sources of variation; they do not eliminate differences caused by the machine or browser environment. For text or other binary data, Playwright Test also provides toMatchSnapshot().

When Percy is worth adding
Consider Percy when local snapshots and test failures do not provide the review workflow your team needs—for example, when a hosted view of visual differences and managed baselines better fits how changes are reviewed. Its documented Playwright integration can route existing toHaveScreenshot() calls through Percy, allowing you to retain the assertions while moving visual review into the hosted workflow.
That change also makes visual approval a distinct step. In the documented drop-in route, a toHaveScreenshot() assertion passes locally while Percy handles the visual verdict. If CI must fail until visual changes are approved, configure and verify a Percy build wait or failure gate. Do not interpret a green test command as proof that the page is visually unchanged.

Check Percy’s integration prerequisites and baseline behavior
At the time of writing, BrowserStack’s integration page documents these minimum versions for its Web Percy route: Node 18 or later, @playwright/test 1.60 or later, @percy/cli 1.32.6 or later, and @percy/playwright 1.1.2 or later. These requirements can change; confirm the current Percy integration documentation before installing or upgrading packages.
Baseline setup depends on the project’s state. For an eligible new Percy project, committed snapshots may establish the base build if the documented configuration and naming conditions are met. Existing Percy projects do not automatically replace their established baselines; Percy documents a separate setup-baseline command for an intentional reset. Check token permissions as well: the documented workflow distinguishes full-access tokens from write-only tokens for reading build status and waiting on a base build. See the integration guide and CLI documentation.

A practical decision process
- Try native assertions first if repository-managed reference images and a failing Playwright check meet your review needs.
- Stabilize the capture environment and control dynamic page content before interpreting noisy differences as product changes.
- Evaluate Percy if hosted comparison and approval address a concrete team workflow need. Its documented integration can reuse existing Playwright screenshot assertions.
- Decide what should block CI. If unapproved visual changes must stop a pipeline, configure and test the Percy wait or failure gate rather than relying on the local assertion result.
- Validate baselines and credentials for the actual project: check whether it is new or established, whether the required snapshot naming and configuration apply, and whether the token can perform the status and wait operations the workflow needs.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot file from a URL rather than a visual regression test with approved baselines, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its separate capture options include custom CSS or JavaScript, full-page capture, element selection, and waits.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for response behavior and options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
