Update Playwright screenshot baselines only after confirming the visual change is intentional. Run the affected tests in the same pinned browser and operating-system environment as the existing baselines, use --update-snapshots=changed for intended mismatches, inspect every resulting image, and commit approved snapshots with the code change they reflect. Use all only for a deliberate full regeneration.
What a Playwright screenshot baseline update does
A screenshot assertion compares rendered output with a reference image. When the images differ, Playwright reports a visual comparison failure; its test runner can also update the reference image. Updating a baseline changes what future runs consider expected, so it should follow investigation and review—not be an automatic response to a failed test. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Update only the snapshots you intend to change
- Confirm the UI change. Check the application change and determine which screenshot assertions should reflect it. If the difference is unexplained, investigate before updating.
- Match the baseline environment. Use the same operating system, browser and browser version, headless mode, and relevant settings used to generate the existing images. Playwright notes that host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshots. Its guidance is to generate and compare screenshots in the same environment.
- Keep Playwright and its browser binaries aligned. If the project changes Playwright versions, install the browser dependencies documented for that version and run tests in the intended environment. Treat resulting rendering changes as a migration to review.
- Limit the test run when practical. Select the relevant tests and configured Playwright projects rather than regenerating unrelated snapshots. Projects can represent different browsers, devices, or other configurations.
- Use the narrow update mode. For intended mismatches, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots=changed. Consult the CLI reference for the Playwright version pinned by the project because modes and defaults are version-sensitive. - Review every changed image. Compare each new image with its previous baseline. Verify that each visible difference follows from the intended UI change; then commit approved snapshot files alongside the code change that explains them.
- Debug unexplained failures. Use Playwright Trace Viewer to inspect the test timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests. Tracing every test by default is performance-heavy, so use it as a debugging aid rather than a replacement for image review.

Choose the right snapshot update mode

The current CLI documentation says that without an update flag the default is missing. It also says the short -u flag without a mode currently defaults to changed. Check the CLI reference for your pinned version before relying on either behavior in team guidance or automation.

Validate each browser and project separately
Playwright projects can run the same tests with different browser or device configurations. Snapshot location and naming are configurable, and project names can distinguish expected images. Inspect the artifacts for the project affected by the change: updating Chromium does not validate WebKit, Firefox, or another project. See snapshot configuration and visual comparison guidance.
Handle environment or version changes as migrations
A change to the host OS, browser, headless mode, Playwright version, or relevant rendering settings can alter screenshots even when the application code is unchanged. If you intentionally migrate one of these, run the intended project configurations in the new environment and review the resulting diffs as migration changes. Do not use all merely to make failures disappear: it overwrites matching references too.

Playwright release notes document changes in snapshot update behavior over time. Confirm the supported modes and defaults against the documentation and release notes corresponding to the version your project pins: CLI reference and release notes.
Troubleshoot unexpected snapshot changes
- Many unrelated images changed: Check that the test ran on the baseline’s operating system, browser version, headless mode, and settings. If the environment change was intentional, treat it as a reviewed migration.
- Only one browser’s snapshots changed: Check the project configuration and the artifacts for that browser. A project-specific update does not establish that other browser projects still match.
- Snapshots were generated but the run failed: If the selected behavior is
missing, the current CLI documentation says the tests that generate absent snapshots fail. Review the generated files and rerun the tests without update mode to verify the comparison. - The command updated more files than expected: Check the mode.
allrewrites matching snapshots as well as mismatches; usechangedfor intended differences only. - A visual failure has no obvious cause: Compare the image diff, then inspect the test trace for timeline, DOM, and network context. Do not accept the new image until its difference is understood.
- A short update flag behaves differently across machines: Check the installed Playwright version and its CLI reference. Update mode behavior and defaults can vary by version.

Should I update Playwright baselines after every visual test failure?
No. First establish whether the rendered difference is expected; update a reference only after reviewing the change.
Does updating Chromium baselines verify WebKit and Firefox too?
No. Each configured browser or device project can have distinct expected screenshots, so run and review the affected projects separately.
