Run Playwright screenshot tests in GitHub Actions with a committed set of visual baselines, a consistent browser environment, and an HTML report artifact that remains available when a test fails. Start with one CI worker for predictable rendering; scale longer suites by sharding and merging their reports.
Set up a basic GitHub Actions workflow
The workflow below follows Playwright’s documented CI pattern: install Node dependencies, install Playwright browsers and Linux dependencies, run the tests, then upload the HTML report unless the workflow was cancelled. Check the current Playwright CI documentation and your repository’s Playwright version before copying action versions or container tags; those details can change.
1. Add a workflow file
Create .github/workflows/playwright.yml in your repository. This example assumes an npm project with a lockfile and Playwright Test configured to write its HTML report to playwright-report/.
name: Playwright tests
on:
push:
pull_request:
jobs:
test:
timeout-minutes: 60
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
with:
node-version: lts/*
- name: Install dependencies
run: npm ci
- name: Install Playwright browsers
run: npx playwright install --with-deps
- name: Run Playwright tests
run: npx playwright test
- name: Upload Playwright report
if: ${{ !cancelled() }}
uses: actions/upload-artifact@v4
with:
name: playwright-report
path: playwright-report/
retention-days: 30
The 30-day retention value is the documentation’s example, not a required duration. Choose a period consistent with your repository’s access and retention policies. Configure Playwright’s HTML reporter if your project does not already produce playwright-report/.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Make CI execution reproducible
In playwright.config.ts, Playwright recommends using one worker in CI to prioritize stability and reproducibility. A typical setting is:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
workers: process.env.CI ? 1 : undefined,
reporter: [['html', { open: 'never' }]],
});
Keep the browser projects and screenshot settings explicit in the configuration so the same test context is used when creating and checking baselines. A container can further standardize the operating environment; use a Playwright container image tag that matches your project’s Playwright version and confirm that tag in the current CI guidance.

Write screenshot assertions and manage baselines
Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion for visual comparisons. On the first execution, Playwright creates the expected screenshot; later executions compare the rendered page with that baseline. The generated snapshot directory is normally alongside the test file. Commit those baseline images so CI and other developers compare against the same reviewed references. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Example test
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example URL with an application route your test environment can access. When you intentionally change the expected UI, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the resulting image diff, and commit only the intended baseline changes.

Keep the rendering context aligned
Screenshot output can differ with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and update baselines in an environment aligned with CI; otherwise, a correct change in one environment can appear as noise in another. Playwright’s snapshot names incorporate test, browser or project, and platform context, so separate projects can require separate references.
Make the page state deterministic before asserting: wait for the relevant content, avoid time-sensitive or randomized UI where possible, and stabilize animations or volatile elements. Playwright supports a stylePath stylesheet to suppress dynamic content and options such as maxDiffPixels and a configurable threshold. Use narrow, justified tolerances: broad allowances can hide genuine visual regressions.

Find reports and diagnose failed screenshots
After a run, open the GitHub Actions workflow run and download the playwright-report artifact from its artifacts area. Because the upload step uses if: ${{ !cancelled() }}, it runs after a failed test as well, unless the workflow was cancelled. If there is no artifact, check whether the job was cancelled and whether the configured report path exists.
For a screenshot failure, the report and trace can help distinguish a real UI change from a setup or timing problem. Playwright’s Trace Viewer can show action screenshots and compare the expected image, actual image, and difference, alongside the sequence of actions that led to the page state.

Protect diagnostic artifacts
Reports, traces, and screenshots can contain application data. Playwright advises uploading them only to trusted artifact stores or encrypting them before upload. Limit access and set retention deliberately, especially for workflows that run against private or production-like data. See Playwright’s CI setup guidance.
Scale longer suites with sharding
A single job is simpler to configure. If it becomes too slow, Playwright can distribute tests across shard jobs, but each shard needs to upload a blob report and a dependent job must download and merge those reports. Follow the current sharding documentation for the complete YAML and matching action versions.
The essential workflow pattern is:
- Run each shard: invoke Playwright with the shard index and total, such as
npx playwright test --shard=1/4, changing the index for each parallel job. - Upload each shard’s blob report: configure the blob reporter and give each artifact a unique name so artifacts from separate jobs do not collide.
- Wait for all test jobs: make a merge job depend on the shard jobs, download their report artifacts, then run
npx playwright merge-reports --reporter html. - Upload the combined report: publish the merged HTML report as a separate artifact with a retention period suitable for investigation.
Sharding reduces elapsed time by distributing work, but increases workflow complexity and requires enough runner capacity to run shards concurrently. Keep the visual environment, browser version, and test configuration consistent across shards.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot from a URL rather than a committed Playwright visual baseline, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call request can return an image; consult the API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. This is a URL capture service, not a replacement for Playwright’s committed baselines and test assertions.
