Playwright screenshots can differ between Linux and macOS even when your application code is unchanged, because each image records the browser’s rendering environment as well as the page. Operating system, fonts, browser build, settings, hardware, headless mode, and screenshot scale can all affect the result. For reliable visual tests, create and compare baselines in the same controlled environment—or maintain separate baselines for Linux and macOS.
Why Linux and macOS produce different screenshots
A screenshot is the rendered output of a particular browser running in a particular environment; it is not a platform-neutral representation of HTML and CSS. Playwright notes that screenshots can differ across platforms and browsers because of rendering, fonts, and other environmental factors. Its guidance is to run visual comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baseline. Playwright visual comparisons documentation
Fonts and text rendering
Linux and macOS may have different fonts installed, or the page may resolve a font differently on each system. A font substitution or platform-specific rendering difference can alter glyph shapes, spacing, line breaks, and the dimensions of surrounding elements. When text wraps differently, check which font actually loaded and whether the same font files are available before increasing a screenshot tolerance.
Browser versions and builds
Browser updates can change rendering. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, but the browser build and its version are part of the test environment. Record the Playwright package and browser versions used for each baseline, and pin them in CI when repeatability matters. Updating Playwright is useful for testing newer browser versions, but review visual changes deliberately; an update can require baseline review. Playwright browser documentation
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Host configuration and headless mode
Playwright identifies operating-system version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can affect rendering. A local Mac run and a Linux CI run may therefore differ in more than their operating systems. Make the capture setup consistent before deciding whether a remaining mismatch is an application regression or an expected platform difference. Playwright visual comparisons documentation
Check screenshot scale before comparing pixels
Playwright’s Page screenshot API offers two scale choices. With scale: 'css', one output image pixel represents one CSS pixel. With scale: 'device', one output pixel represents one device pixel, so high-DPI displays can produce larger images. Use the same scale on both systems; otherwise image dimensions and pixel-level comparisons may differ for reasons unrelated to the page. Playwright Page API

Make visual comparisons reproducible
Choose and record the baseline environment
For each visual test project, specify the operating-system image and version, Playwright package version, browser project and build, headless or headed execution, and screenshot scale. Generate the expected screenshot in that environment and run comparisons there as well. If both Linux and macOS behavior matter, keep platform-specific expected screenshots rather than assuming a single image must match pixel for pixel on both.
Stabilize the page before capture
Wait for the page’s required data and fonts to be ready using your test’s own readiness checks. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against the expected image, and its options can disable animations, hide the caret, or apply a stylesheet to hide or alter volatile elements. These controls reduce instability from animation and changing content, but they do not make operating-system rendering identical. Playwright PageAssertions API

Diagnose a mismatch in a useful order
- Confirm the environment. Compare OS image/version, Playwright package and browser versions, browser project, and headless mode.
- Inspect fonts and wrapping. Verify the actual loaded fonts and whether text breaks onto different lines.
- Match screenshot scale. Confirm both captures use
cssor both usedevice. - Check page state and timing. Ensure data, fonts, animations, caret, and volatile elements are controlled consistently.
- Review the application change. Once environmental differences are ruled out, inspect the image diff for a genuine UI regression.
When to use separate Linux and macOS snapshots
Use separate expected screenshots when the same interface is intentionally tested on both platforms and platform-specific rendering differences are acceptable. Playwright’s generated snapshot names can include browser and platform information, and its documentation explicitly notes that different snapshots may be needed across browsers and platforms. A permissive pixel threshold can tolerate small differences, but it does not identify their cause; diagnose systematic shifts such as changed line wrapping before loosening the comparison. Is Playwright WebKit on Linux equivalent to macOS Safari?
No. Playwright’s WebKit is derived from WebKit main rather than being the branded Safari browser. Playwright recommends macOS when the goal is the closest Safari experience. Linux WebKit can be a more affordable CI option, but it should not be treated as a pixel-identical substitute for Safari on macOS. Playwright browser documentation

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered website screenshot without configuring a local browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; get an API key first, and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie banners are accepted and known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; these steps can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses include page-verdict and billing headers.
- An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools.
- The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my Playwright snapshots fail on Linux but pass on Mac?
The runs may differ in fonts, browser build, headless mode, screenshot scale, or other host settings. Compare those inputs before treating the failure as an application change.
