A black screenshot from Selenium-controlled headless Chrome does not point to one universal cause. First check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions, configure headless mode and the viewport deliberately, and confirm the driver is capturing the intended page and window. Then compare a controlled headless run with a headful one.
Start with versions and ChromeOptions
Check the installed Chrome and ChromeDriver versions before investigating image processing. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says their major versions must match. It also lists --headless=new among commonly used Chrome arguments. See Selenium’s Chrome-specific documentation and use arguments supported by the Chrome version installed in your environment.

WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);This is a deliberate starting configuration, not a guaranteed fix. Record the Selenium, Chrome, and ChromeDriver versions and the exact arguments used. If your installed Chrome behaves differently, consult the current Chrome documentation rather than assuming an older headless switch applies.
Use a repeatable viewport
Set an explicit window size and inspect the resulting PNG dimensions. Chrome’s Headless command-line reference pairs screenshot capture with --window-size; this is useful for controlled comparisons, but it does not establish that any particular size fixes black pixels.

- Keep the viewport the same when comparing runs.
- Record the image dimensions and whether the PNG is entirely black or only partly affected.
- Keep the page and test steps unchanged while varying one condition at a time.
Capture the intended page and window
Selenium’s screenshot operation captures the current browsing context. Before capture, verify the driver is on the expected URL and selected window. Selenium’s windows and tabs documentation shows the Java screenshot pattern:

If the test uses multiple tabs or windows, explicitly switch to the intended handle first. If the page may still be loading or painting, compare captures at repeatable points in its lifecycle; treat timing as a hypothesis to test, not an established explanation for every black image.

Compare headless and headful runs
Run the same test with the same browser and driver versions, page, steps, and viewport, changing only whether Chrome is headless. A headful success and headless failure narrows the investigation but does not, by itself, identify the cause. Chrome’s documentation describes headless and headful modes as unified and says Headless shares code with Chrome: Chrome Headless mode.
- Save a headless screenshot and note its dimensions and appearance.
- Repeat with headful Chrome while holding other conditions constant.
- Check whether the driver selected the same page and window in both runs.
- Record what changed before drawing a conclusion.
Troubleshoot common symptoms

If the initial checks do not resolve the issue, report observations rather than presenting an unverified fix. Include:
