Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() matcher. Set threshold to tune how much color difference an individual pixel may have, then set maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio to limit the total difference the assertion accepts.
Set a custom pixel threshold in a screenshot assertion
For a one-off tolerance, pass the options to toHaveScreenshot():

Understand threshold versus allowed differing pixels
The two settings operate at different levels: threshold affects whether an individual pixel counts as different, while the aggregate limit determines how many counted differences the whole screenshot can contain.

Changing threshold can make subtle differences disappear from the diff; raising the aggregate allowance can let a larger change pass. These controls are not substitutes for each other. Playwright documents the options, but does not prescribe one tolerance for every application. Review the generated diff when changing either kind of tolerance. Set project-wide defaults
Put shared screenshot expectations under expect.toHaveScreenshot in your Playwright configuration. An individual assertion can still supply different options for a case that needs them.

Make screenshot comparisons repeatable before relaxing tolerance
A more permissive threshold can hide meaningful changes. First make the capture state consistent and handle content that is genuinely volatile.

- Keep the browser, viewport, and test environment consistent with the baseline.
- Control dynamic content. Playwright’s visual comparison guide describes applying a stylesheet during screenshot capture to filter volatile elements.
- Check for unintended hover effects: the screenshot reflects the hover state present at capture time.
- Inspect the resulting comparison to determine whether a difference is noise or a real UI change.
- Adjust per-pixel sensitivity and the total difference allowance separately, then review the diff rather than treating a passing assertion as proof that every change is harmless.
Playwright’s screenshot matcher waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last screenshot with the expectation. That helps with capture stabilization, but does not replace controlling dynamic content or reviewing a difference. See the visual comparison guide and PageAssertions API.
Use the screenshot-specific matcher
For a page screenshot, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(); for an element screenshot, use the corresponding locator assertion. These screenshot assertions run with the Playwright Test runner. Although toMatchSnapshot can compare a screenshot buffer, Playwright’s snapshot assertion reference recommends toHaveScreenshot() for screenshot comparisons. See SnapshotAssertions.
