Playwright Test can check a page’s appearance with await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates a reference image; later runs compare new captures with it. Keep the baseline, browser version, operating system, and CI environment consistent, and review every baseline change before updating it.
Set up a screenshot test
This example uses Playwright Test with a page in your project. It assumes Playwright is already installed and configured. The exact reference image depends on the browser and host environment, so choose the browser and operating system you intend to use for both baseline generation and CI.
Add a visual assertion
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('landing page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png');
});
Replace the URL with your app’s local address and ensure its development server is running when the test executes. The filename is optional; naming it makes the captured page easy to identify.
Generate and commit the first baseline
Run the test with npx playwright test. On its first execution, Playwright saves the expected screenshot in a snapshot directory associated with the test file. Inspect the image, then commit it with the test. Subsequent runs capture the page again and compare it with that stored baseline.

A baseline is an expected result, not an automatically approved design update. When a test reports a difference, inspect the actual image and diff before deciding whether the page changed intentionally or regressed.
Update snapshots after an intentional design change
After changing the UI deliberately, first run the tests and inspect the reported differences. If the new appearance is correct, update the expected screenshots:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed image files in version control alongside the code change. Avoid updating snapshots merely to make a failing test pass: that can replace a useful regression warning with an unreviewed baseline.
Keep screenshot comparisons consistent
Pixel output can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright advises running visual comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baselines. A developer’s local machine and a CI runner may render differently even when the application code is unchanged. These are environment differences, not India-specific requirements. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

Align the important variables first
- Use the same operating system for baseline generation and comparison where possible.
- Use the same browser engine and Playwright version, with matching browser binaries.
- Keep test settings and capture mode consistent, including headless versus headed execution.
- Make page content stable: avoid time-dependent text, rotating banners, random data, and animations that produce different frames.
When local and CI output differs, compare the environments and inspect the diff before loosening the assertion. Do not expect arbitrary machines to produce pixel-identical screenshots.
Set a justified pixel tolerance
maxDiffPixels sets how many differing pixels are allowed. Use it only when you have identified small, harmless rendering variation that remains after aligning environments. A higher threshold can also allow real visual regressions to pass, so keep it narrow and specific.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png', {
maxDiffPixels: 20,
});
Hide only genuinely volatile elements
Use stylePath to apply a stylesheet during capture when a known element is inherently dynamic and irrelevant to the visual check. For example, a stylesheet can hide a live clock or rotating advertisement. Keep the filter targeted: hiding large or meaningful sections can conceal defects.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png', {
stylePath: './tests/visual-stability.css',
});
The referenced file must exist in the project. Confirm the stylesheet affects only the screenshot capture and does not hide content whose appearance the test is meant to validate.

Install the matching browsers
Playwright versions require specific browser binaries. Installing the package does not necessarily install every browser or the operating-system dependencies needed to run them. Use Playwright’s CLI for the browser versions associated with the installed package; see its browser installation documentation.
# Install Playwright-managed browser binaries
npx playwright install
# Install operating-system dependencies where supported
npx playwright install-deps
# Install Chromium and its dependencies together
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, and configurations for branded Chrome and Edge. Pick the engine that reflects your application’s test target, and keep its binary aligned with the Playwright package. Re-check the current documentation when changing versions because browser installation commands and supported environments can evolve.
Run screenshot tests in CI
For a Node.js project using npm and a Linux CI runner, the documented basic sequence is to install locked dependencies, install browsers and operating-system dependencies, then run Playwright Test:
npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright test
Keep CI on the same operating system and browser setup used for the reference images. Store the baselines in version control so a CI run compares against the project’s reviewed expectation.

Start with one worker for stability
Playwright recommends a single worker in CI as a stability-oriented default. In playwright.config.ts, this can be expressed as:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
workers: process.env.CI ? 1 : undefined,
});
More parallel workers may shorten elapsed time on a capable self-hosted runner, but can increase resource contention and make visual tests less predictable. If the suite needs more capacity, Playwright supports distributing work with sharding across CI jobs. Browser caching is not automatically beneficial: Playwright notes that restoring a cache can take as long as downloading browsers, and Linux system dependencies still need installation.

The test reports a screenshot mismatch
Open the expected image, actual image, and diff. Check whether the code change intentionally altered the design. If not, investigate dynamic content, fonts, animation, viewport settings, browser version, headless mode, and operating system before changing the baseline or tolerance.
Playwright cannot launch a browser
The browser binary may be missing or incompatible with the installed Playwright version, or required system libraries may be absent. Run npx playwright install; on supported Linux environments, install dependencies with npx playwright install-deps or use npx playwright install --with-deps chromium for Chromium.

The page is blank or navigation fails
Confirm the app server is running at the URL used by page.goto(), that the test environment can reach it, and that the route is valid. A screenshot assertion cannot produce a meaningful baseline if navigation failed or the page had not rendered.
CI fails but the same test passes locally
Compare the CI operating system, Playwright package and browser versions, capture mode, and available system dependencies with the baseline-generation environment. Also check whether parallel workers or resource pressure are affecting rendering. Align the setup before adding pixel tolerance.
Screenshot assertions versus other snapshots
toHaveScreenshot() is for comparing page or element images. Playwright also supports toMatchSnapshot() for text and arbitrary binary data; these are different snapshot use cases and should not be confused with visual page assertions. See the visual comparisons documentation for the relevant APIs.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-call website capture outside a Playwright test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its endpoint accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie banners are accepted and removed, and known newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and MCP clients. - The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright compare screenshots across different operating systems?
It can run comparisons in different environments, but rendering may vary; the reliable approach is to generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment.
Can Playwright screenshot tests compare text files instead of images?
Yes. Use `toMatchSnapshot()` for text or arbitrary binary data; `toHaveScreenshot()` is the visual image assertion.
