If a CaptureKit screenshot shows a Cloudflare challenge, the capture may have succeeded: CaptureKit rendered the challenge page instead of the destination. First distinguish that from an API error or an incomplete render, then check the request and logs. Cloudflare says automated browsers are not supported for solving production challenges, and CaptureKit’s cited documentation does not promise a Cloudflare-specific fix. If you control the protected site, Cloudflare Browser Run offers an owner-configured alternative.
First identify what actually failed
Look at the returned image or PDF and the HTTP response before changing settings. These are different failure modes and need different fixes.
- Cloudflare challenge or interstitial is visible: The screenshot endpoint may have returned an image successfully, but the page it captured was a challenge rather than the intended content.
- Blank or partly rendered page: The request may have reached the page, but rendering, network loading, or timing may be incomplete.
- API error response: Check the request, credentials, account status, endpoint response, and request logs rather than treating it as a challenge-solving problem.
Cloudflare challenges can be triggered by multiple products and rules using browser signals; a screenshot alone does not establish the specific cause. See Cloudflare’s explanation of how challenges work.
Check the CaptureKit request and response
CaptureKit is an HTTP API: the request supplies an API key and a URL, and the endpoint returns a screenshot or PDF. Compare your request with the current Capture (Screenshot) endpoint documentation and API introduction.

- Confirm the target URL is the intended, reachable page and is correctly encoded.
- Verify the API key is being sent in the documented
x-api-keyheader. - Check the requested output format and any device or viewport options.
- If you supplied a proxy parameter, verify its syntax against the endpoint reference. CaptureKit documents proxy support, but its cited docs do not say that a proxy guarantees access through Cloudflare challenges.
- Inspect the HTTP status and CaptureKit request logs. Its general documentation describes 401, 402, 403, 404, 413, 429, and 500 response classes; consult the current endpoint documentation for the specific response and explanation.
A 401, 402, or 429, for example, is an API or account issue to resolve according to the returned status and current docs. A successful image response that depicts a challenge is a different outcome: changing authentication will not make the challenge page become the destination page.
If the screenshot is incomplete, adjust rendering waits
When the endpoint succeeds but the screenshot is blank or missing content, check CaptureKit’s documented wait and rendering controls in its endpoint reference. Use the appropriate wait option for the page’s loading behavior, and allow time for its scripts and content to render. A longer wait may help with ordinary late-loading content, but the cited CaptureKit sources do not establish that a particular wait setting solves Cloudflare challenges.

If Cloudflare is challenging the browser
Cloudflare lists possible challenge-solving problems such as blocked challenge scripts, unsupported browsers, disabled JavaScript, network conditions, and bot-like signals. Check that the rendering environment can load the page’s required resources and run JavaScript, and that the network is stable. Cloudflare says most challenges are quick and typically take only a few seconds; that is general Cloudflare guidance, not a CaptureKit timing guarantee. Do not assume that stealth flags, a different proxy, or repeated retries will reliably pass a production challenge. Cloudflare’s supported-browser documentation says automated browsers and frameworks such as Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright, and Cypress are unsupported for solving production challenges. It points automated Turnstile testing to test keys. The cited supported-browser page is hosted on Cloudflare’s documentation preview domain, so check the page for current wording before relying on it operationally.

Collect useful evidence for escalation
- Reproduce the issue while preserving a HAR (HTTP Archive) recording of the network activity.
- Export the browser console log from the same reproduction.
- Record the displayed Cloudflare error code and Ray ID, if present.
- Give those details to the site administrator, who can investigate the challenge and the zone’s rules.

If you control the protected Cloudflare zone
For an authorized workflow on your own zone, Cloudflare documents a Browser Run screenshot endpoint that renders a webpage with HTML and JavaScript before capture. Cloudflare also says an owner scanning their own zone can configure a WAF skip rule so Browser Run is allowed without the site’s bot-protection configuration interfering. This route requires control or authorization for the target zone; it is not a method for bypassing protections on an arbitrary third-party website. Frequently Asked Questions
Does seeing a Cloudflare page mean CaptureKit failed?
Not necessarily. If the endpoint returned an image, it may have successfully captured the challenge interstitial rather than the requested page.
Can I use automated Turnstile tests instead of testing against a production challenge?
