Both Cypress and Selenium can capture browser screenshots, but neither screenshot command alone is visual regression testing. Cypress is a natural fit when your tests already run in Cypress and you want its runner to save failure screenshots during cypress run. Selenium offers screenshot methods for the current browsing context and individual elements across its language bindings. For either tool, detecting visual changes requires an additional baseline-comparison and review workflow.
Screenshot capture and visual regression are different jobs
A screenshot is an image artifact. A visual regression test compares a new image with an approved baseline, identifies differences, and gives someone a way to decide whether those differences are expected. Cypress explicitly says its built-in screenshot function does not compare images; Selenium’s screenshot documentation describes capture methods, not a baseline-review system.
- Capture: render the page or element in a browser and save or return its image.
- Compare: compare that image with a known-good baseline using a separate comparison tool or implementation.
- Review: inspect differences and approve a new baseline when a change is intentional.
A test that saves an image may help diagnose a failure, but it does not fail because pixels changed unless you add a comparison assertion or service.
How Cypress and Selenium compare for QA screenshots
| Question | Cypress | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| How do you capture? | cy.screenshot() captures the application under test. Cypress also captures screenshots automatically for failed tests during cypress run. |
WebDriver screenshot methods capture the current browsing context or an element. The page-context method returns Base64-encoded image data in the documented API. |
| Does capture include image comparison? | No. Add a plugin, integration, or other comparison workflow. | The cited WebDriver documentation establishes capture methods, not visual comparison or baseline review. Add the comparison workflow your project needs. |
| Are failure screenshots automatic? | Automatic for failures in cypress run; not automatic in cypress open. |
The screenshot methods are explicit commands. Whether failures are saved automatically depends on the test framework or project code around WebDriver. |
| What setup does it suit? | Projects already using Cypress that want screenshots inside its test-runner workflow. | Projects already using Selenium WebDriver and its language bindings. |
These documented differences do not establish that one tool produces more accurate images or is universally faster. Choose based on your existing test stack and where you want capture to happen.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capture a screenshot with Cypress
Call cy.screenshot() in a Cypress test to capture the application under test. This JavaScript example captures after visiting a page; replace the example URL with your test target.
describe('homepage screenshot', () => {
it('captures the homepage', () => {
cy.visit('https://example.com');
cy.screenshot('homepage');
});
});
Run the spec with cypress run to use Cypress’s automatic failure screenshots as well. Cypress documents cypress/screenshots as the default screenshot output folder; the screenshots-folder setting can change it. A manual screenshot call is available in the interactive runner or in cypress run, but automatic failure capture is specifically documented for run mode, not cypress open. See Cypress visual testing documentation for capture and visual-testing guidance.
Capture a screenshot with Selenium
Selenium WebDriver supports screenshots of the current browsing context and elements. In Python, save_screenshot writes the current page image to a file, while an element’s screenshot method captures that element. Install the Selenium Python binding and the browser driver setup appropriate for your environment before running this example.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
# Configure the browser and driver for your environment.
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
heading = driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "h1")
heading.screenshot("heading.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
The WebDriver page screenshot command returns Base64-encoded image data at the protocol level; language bindings provide convenient ways to save the screenshot. Selenium’s screenshot API does not, by itself, define when a test failure should trigger capture or how saved images should be compared.
Build a dependable visual-regression workflow
Control the conditions before comparing
Generate and compare screenshots in the same environment and at a fixed viewport. Changes in browser, viewport, page state, or rendering conditions can produce differences that are not regressions in the interface itself. Cypress recommends consistent environments and fixed viewports for visual comparisons.
- Use the same browser and version, operating environment, viewport dimensions, and device scale where possible.
- Make test data and application state predictable; wait for the page to reach the state you intend to assess.
- Account for dynamic regions such as timestamps, rotating content, or avatars using the facilities of your chosen comparison tool. Do not assume captures will be pixel-identical without controlling variation.
- Decide whether the test should capture a whole page or a particular element. Element captures can narrow review to a component; full-page captures cover more content but may include more variable regions.
Add comparison and review
Store an approved baseline, compare each new capture against it, and make the resulting difference reviewable. A person or defined approval process should determine whether a change is intentional before replacing a baseline. Cypress documents local/CI plugins and hosted integrations for this purpose, including Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy (BrowserStack), Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io. Their inclusion as examples in Cypress documentation is not an independent assessment of current quality, price, service terms, or availability.

When to choose each approach
- Choose Cypress capture when the suite already uses Cypress and you want manual screenshots or built-in failure artifacts from
cypress run. - Choose Selenium capture when the suite already uses WebDriver and you want to capture pages or elements from its existing language bindings.
- Add a visual-testing integration or comparison step when the QA requirement is to detect and review appearance changes, rather than merely retain screenshots.
Switching frameworks solely to obtain a screenshot command is usually solving the wrong problem: the central choice for visual QA is how you create comparable captures and review their differences.
Troubleshooting screenshot QA
No Cypress screenshot appears after a failure
Check that the test is running with cypress run. Cypress documents automatic failure screenshots for run mode, not for cypress open. For an intentional capture, call cy.screenshot() in the test and check the configured screenshots folder; the default is cypress/screenshots.
A screenshot exists, but the test passes despite a visual change
That is expected if the test only captures an image. Add a baseline comparison and a review or approval workflow; screenshot capture is not a visual assertion.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Comparisons show noisy or inconsistent differences
First stabilize the inputs: use a fixed viewport and consistent environment, wait for the intended page state, and control variable content. If variation is intrinsic to a region, use an ignore or masking option if your comparison tool supports it.
Selenium does not save an image automatically when a test fails
The cited Selenium screenshot methods are explicit capture operations; automatic failure handling is not established by those methods. Add screenshot capture to your test framework’s failure hook or use a project integration that provides that behavior.
