The returned screenshot represents the current browsing context; copy the temporary output file to a durable path before the Java process exits.
Capture a screenshot through a Grid session
The Java client sends WebDriver commands to the Grid URL; Grid routes them to a remote browser. Supply both the endpoint and browser options when constructing RemoteWebDriver, then use the standard WebDriver screenshot call.
Runnable Java example
This example uses Apache Commons IO to copy Selenium’s temporary screenshot file. It illustrates the documented API pattern; it has not been verified against a particular Selenium release or Grid deployment.
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.net.URL;
import org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils;
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.RemoteWebDriver;
public class GridScreenshot {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
URL gridUrl = new URL("http://localhost:4444");
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
WebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(gridUrl, options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
File temporaryScreenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
FileUtils.copyFile(temporaryScreenshot, new File("screenshot.png"));
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The screenshot call is ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE). Selenium also supports OutputType.BYTES and OutputType.BASE64 if your application needs raw bytes or encoded data rather than a temporary file. See Selenium’s screenshot documentation and remote WebDriver documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the Grid endpoint and browser
Selenium’s getting-started guide lists Java 11 or higher, browsers and browser drivers among the prerequisites. For a local Standalone server, the documented startup form is java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone; the default endpoint is http://localhost:4444. Use a different URL when your Grid runs remotely or in containers. See Selenium Grid getting started.
- Start or locate Grid. Make sure the Grid is running and that the Java test runner can reach its endpoint.
- Choose browser options. The example uses
ChromeOptions; the options object tells the remote driver which browser session to request. - Set the target URL. Replace
https://example.comwith the page to capture. - Choose a client-side output path. The example writes
screenshot.pngrelative to the Java process’s working directory.
The Grid endpoint must resolve from the client’s point of view. A hostname available only inside a Grid container may not resolve from the machine running the Java test.

Understand what the screenshot contains
Selenium describes the standard screenshot operation as capturing the “current browsing context.” Treat it as a browser screenshot, not a guarantee that the entire document from top to bottom will be included. See Selenium’s Java TakesScreenshot API.
If you need only one element, Selenium documents a separate element screenshot operation. Full-page capture is browser- and API-specific; it is not implied by the generic TakesScreenshot call. Check the supported behavior for the browser and Selenium version your project uses, including Selenium’s WebElement API.

Choose a persistence format
| Output type | What you receive | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
OutputType.FILE |
A temporary file | Copy it to your intended destination while the JVM is running; the Java API says the temporary file is deleted when the JVM exits. |
OutputType.BYTES |
Raw image bytes | Write the bytes through your application’s normal file or storage workflow. |
OutputType.BASE64 |
Base64-encoded image data | Decode or pass the encoded value to a workflow that accepts Base64. |
These output choices are documented by Selenium’s OutputType API. The path used to copy a screenshot is on the Java client machine, not a browser node’s download directory.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Could not connect to Grid: Confirm the server is running, use the correct endpoint, and verify that the endpoint is reachable from the Java test runner.
- Session creation fails or the wrong browser is requested: Check that your options object matches the browser you intend Grid to launch and that the Grid has a compatible browser available.
- The saved file is missing after shutdown: Do not rely on Selenium’s temporary
OutputType.FILEpath. Copy it before JVM exit, or use bytes/Base64 and persist those yourself. - Screenshot does not include the full page: The generic screenshot call covers the current browsing context, not a documented promise of full-document capture. Use a verified browser-specific full-page method if that scope is required.
- Session remains allocated after an exception: Put capture work inside a
tryblock and calldriver.quit()infinally, as in the example, so the remote session is released when navigation or file handling fails.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Grid take the screenshot on the Java client machine?
