Whether a 2019 NVIDIA SHIELD TV “does more” depends on the job: SHIELD TV Pro is better equipped for USB expansion, Plex Media Server and certain local-media setups; the Cube is built for hands-free Alexa control, and the 2022 model adds Wi-Fi 6E and an HDMI input.
First, which Fire TV Cube are you comparing?
Amazon has sold distinct second- and third-generation Fire TV Cubes. The second generation launched in 2019; the third generation followed in 2022. Their specifications differ, so check the generation on the listing rather than treating “Fire TV Cube” as one unchanged model. Amazon’s product pages identify the second-generation Cube and third-generation Cube separately.
Third-generation Cube: newer connections
Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6E and an HDMI input among the 2022 model’s features. Its HDMI input may be useful when you want to route another device through the Cube, but check the supported connection and your equipment before assuming it replaces a receiver or HDMI switch. Amazon also describes hands-free Alexa control and control of compatible TVs and AV equipment.
Second-generation Cube: a different, older product
The 2019 model has its own specifications and should not be assumed to have the third-generation Cube’s Wi-Fi 6E or HDMI input. Amazon announced that second-generation Cube at a U.S. launch price of $119.99 in 2019; that is a historical launch price, not a current price quote.

Does the Cube cost $200 now?
The available price evidence does not establish a current $200 U.S. price. A TechRadar buying guide accessed in 2026 reported $139.99 for the Fire TV Cube, but that secondary report is not a confirmation of the price or availability on a live retailer listing. Check the current listing for your country, seller and exact generation before deciding based on price.
For context, NVIDIA announced the 2019 SHIELD TV at a starting price of $149 and the SHIELD TV Pro at $199. Those are also historical launch prices, not present-day street prices. A comparison of today’s value needs current prices for the exact Cube generation and SHIELD model being considered.

What “does more” means on the SHIELD side
There are two 2019 SHIELD models to distinguish: the compact SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro. Some of the capabilities often cited as reasons to keep a SHIELD are Pro-only. NVIDIA lists two USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, expandable storage and Plex Media Server for the SHIELD TV Pro. Its comparison page identifies Plex Media Server and USB-tuner DVR as Pro features; do not assume the tube-shaped SHIELD TV has those ports or functions.
Local media, storage and Plex
If your setup uses USB storage or peripherals, or you want to run Plex Media Server on the streaming device, the Pro’s documented ports and server feature are concrete advantages. Compatibility still depends on the media files, app, storage device and rest of your setup. A supported codec or container does not guarantee that every file will play correctly.

Picture and audio formats
NVIDIA lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, Dolby Atmos, DTS passthrough and high-resolution audio support for SHIELD TV Pro, as well as AI upscaling. These specifications can matter in a home-theater system, but they do not guarantee that a particular streaming app, title or local file will deliver those formats. The TV, receiver, app and source must also support the relevant format and signal path.
Amazon lists 4K and HDR capabilities for its Cube models, with specifications varying by generation. Format support is not the same as a promise that every title will stream in 4K or HDR: the app, content, display, connection and subscription may affect what you receive.

Gaming
NVIDIA has described SHIELD gaming that includes cloud gaming, local streaming and native games; its current product information points to GeForce NOW. Cloud gaming depends on service availability, subscription terms, supported games and network conditions. Those factors can change, so confirm that the games and service you want are available in your region before choosing SHIELD for gaming.

The Cube’s clearest distinction is its hands-free Alexa design. Amazon says it can respond to Alexa voice commands and control compatible TV and AV equipment. That can be more convenient than reaching for a remote if your devices are compatible and voice control suits your household. Actual functions depend on setup, equipment, services and availability.

The 2022 Cube’s HDMI input and Wi-Fi 6E may also suit a setup that benefits from those specific connections. The SHIELD TV Pro’s listed strengths are different—wired Gigabit Ethernet, USB expansion and Plex Media Server—so compare the ports and tasks you will actually use rather than counting feature names.

If “does more” means more options for a USB-connected media setup or running Plex Media Server, SHIELD TV Pro has the clearer documented case. If it means hands-free Alexa and controlling compatible living-room equipment, the Cube may be the more useful device. For a fair buying decision, compare current listings for the exact generations and SKUs—not the Cube’s unverified $200 claim or either product’s old launch price.
