To make a thumbnail from an ecommerce product page with Cloudinary, register for the URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on, capture the public page with the url2png delivery type, then apply a Cloudinary crop-and-resize transformation. Screenshot-generating requests are signed or eagerly generated by default; plan the capture context and thumbnail crop before building a production workflow.
What this workflow produces
URL2PNG captures a public webpage as an image. Cloudinary then treats that screenshot as an image asset, so you can create a smaller crop for a product card or catalog preview. This is different from making a product image from the product photograph itself: a page screenshot includes the surrounding page layout, while a transformed source photo focuses on the item.
For a thumbnail that should show the product page as a preview, use the screenshot workflow below. For a card meant to show the item clearly, use the original product photo and Cloudinary’s ordinary image transformations instead. What you need before capturing
- A Cloudinary account with the URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on registered. Registration is required before using the add-on.
- A publicly accessible product-page URL that you are permitted to capture.
- A target card size and aspect ratio, plus a decision about desktop versus mobile layout and whether the capture should cover the full page.
Cloudinary’s documentation describes public website capture and options including viewport, user_agent, delay, and fullpage. It does not establish that the add-on can capture login-gated pages, bypass bot defenses, dismiss consent dialogs, or render every site’s lazy-loaded catalog consistently. Test the specific page and permitted access path you intend to use.

Capture the page, then make the thumbnail
1. Register the add-on and choose a capture context
Enable URL2PNG for your Cloudinary account, then decide how the page should be rendered. A mobile user agent and narrower viewport can create a mobile-style preview; a desktop context can better match a desktop catalog. Set a delay only when the page needs extra time for content to render. Use full-page capture when the full page is important, but consider whether that tall image will become an unreadable thumbnail after cropping.
2. Generate the screenshot using URL2PNG
Cloudinary’s documented delivery type is url2png; the target website URL is supplied as the public ID. URL2PNG options are appended after /url2png/ as pipe-separated name=value pairs. For example, the documentation illustrates a capture configured with a mobile user agent, a 640-pixel viewport, and fullpage=false. Build the URL with Cloudinary’s authenticated API or use authenticated eager generation rather than assuming the screenshot can be requested as an unsigned dynamic URL.
By default, Cloudinary requires delivery URLs that create screenshots to be signed or eagerly generated. After a screenshot has been created through a signed URL or authenticated API, later transformations of that same image can use unsigned dynamic Cloudinary URLs. Cloudinary also documents an account security setting that can allow unsigned add-on transformations, but that is a deliberate change from the default. 3. Crop and resize for the card
Once captured, apply an image transformation to produce the thumbnail dimensions your interface needs. Cloudinary’s documented example creates a 150 by 200 pixel thumbnail with a fill crop and north gravity. That is an example, not a recommended universal size: choose dimensions for your own card, and select crop gravity based on what must remain visible.

Cloudinary’s transformation URL format includes the cloud name, asset type, delivery type, optional transformation parameters and version, and public ID. SDK URL helpers can construct the URL. On first access, Cloudinary creates and delivers the derived image; subsequent requests for that same derivative can use the cached CDN version. The screenshot and its derivative can also be further transformed with operations such as borders, rounded corners, shadows, and overlays. See Cloudinary image transformations.
Use signing or eager generation safely
Screenshot creation is a dynamic operation, so Cloudinary’s default signing or eager-generation requirement helps guard against unplanned screenshot requests that could create usage. Use the authenticated API to sign the generation URL or eagerly create the screenshot, then deliver the resulting transformed asset as appropriate for your setup. Keep credentials used for authenticated generation on the server; do not expose API secrets in browser code.

Choose between a page screenshot and a product photo

In either case, match the crop to the actual card design and verify that important content remains visible at the rendered size.
Usage, performance, and cost considerations
- Cloudinary account limits for uploads, transformations, and delivery vary by plan. The consulted documentation does not establish a current per-screenshot charge or quota, so check your Cloudinary Console plan details before estimating costs.
- Each new screenshot or distinct derived transformation can add usage. Reuse the same capture and derivative when the page and desired crop have not changed.
- Cloudinary says derived images are cached on its CDN after creation, which avoids recreating the same derivative for every subsequent request.
- Review derived assets and usage in your account to manage transformation consumption, as advised in Cloudinary’s Admin API documentation.
Troubleshooting common problems
The screenshot request is rejected
Confirm that URL2PNG is registered for the account and that a screenshot-generating URL is signed or the screenshot is eagerly generated through the authenticated API. An unsigned request may be blocked under the default security behavior.

The screenshot shows the wrong layout
Check the viewport and user_agent options. A page may serve a different layout based on either value; select the context that matches the thumbnail’s intended use.
Important content has not appeared
Try an appropriate delay and verify whether the content is loaded by the time the capture runs. The documentation lists a delay option but does not guarantee that it will handle every site’s scripts, lazy loading, or access controls.
The thumbnail cuts off the product or page content
Revisit the target dimensions, aspect ratio, crop mode, and gravity. A fill crop fills the requested frame, so parts of the source can be cropped away. Use a different crop strategy or a more suitable capture viewport when preserving the whole composition matters.

The page is blank or blocked
Check that the URL is publicly accessible and renders normally without a login or anti-bot challenge. The available documentation does not promise URL2PNG can bypass those restrictions; use a permitted public page or a suitable source product image instead.
Usage is higher than expected
Check whether your workflow is repeatedly creating screenshots or requesting many distinct transformations. Reuse stable capture outputs and derived sizes, and review the account’s current plan limits and derived assets.
