Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutecy.screenshot() saves an image of your app during a Cypress test. Choose capture to control what appears: viewport records the current viewport, fullPage scrolls and stitches the page, and runner includes the Cypress Command Log. You can also capture a yielded DOM element, crop or mask content, control duplicate filenames, and use automatic failure screenshots during cypress run. Screenshots default to cypress/screenshots. Cypress documents the command and its options.
Basic syntax and examples
Call cy.screenshot() directly to capture the application, or pass a filename and options object. The command is asynchronous and yields its original subject; Cypress cautions that chaining later commands that rely on that subject is unsafe.
// Capture the application using the default settings
cy.screenshot()
// Set a filename and capture the current viewport
cy.screenshot('checkout', { capture: 'viewport' })
// Capture one element yielded by a Cypress query
cy.get('[data-testid="receipt"]').screenshot('receipt')
For an element screenshot, chain .screenshot() from a command that yields the element. Options that apply only to page captures, such as capture, do not change the scope of an element capture.
Choose what the screenshot includes
| Capture mode | Documented default | What appears | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
viewport |
No; the default is fullPage. |
The application in the current browser viewport. | Comparing the visible screen or recording the exact current view. |
fullPage |
Yes | The whole application page, captured by scrolling and stitching images. | Inspecting content below the fold in one artifact. |
runner |
No | The browser viewport together with the Cypress Command Log. | Debugging when command context is useful in the image. |
Set the mode explicitly when the distinction matters:

cy.screenshot('visible-state', { capture: 'viewport' })
cy.screenshot('entire-page', { capture: 'fullPage' })
cy.screenshot('debug-context', { capture: 'runner' })
Full-page capture can show fixed or sticky elements more than once because Cypress scrolls and stitches the page. The capture option is ignored for element screenshots. Failure screenshots are coerced to runner, so their output may differ from a manual screenshot configured for another mode. See the command API’s capture-mode behavior.
Every cy.screenshot() option
The API’s documented defaults are summarized below. Defaults and related shared settings are also described in the Cypress.Screenshot API.
| Option | Default | Effect and scope |
|---|---|---|
log |
true |
Shows the screenshot command in the Cypress Command Log. |
blackout |
[] |
An array of selectors for elements to black out in applicable captures. The API says it does not apply to runner captures. |
capture |
'fullPage' |
Chooses 'viewport', 'fullPage' or 'runner' for page capture. Ignored for element captures; failure screenshots are coerced to 'runner'. |
clip |
null |
Crops the final image to pixel coordinates and dimensions, such as { x: 0, y: 0, width: 100, height: 100 }. |
disableTimersAndAnimations |
true |
Prevents JavaScript timers and CSS animations from running during capture. Set to false to let them continue. |
padding |
null |
Adds padding to an element screenshot. Accepts a number or up to four numbers using CSS shorthand; ignored for other screenshot types. |
scale |
false |
Scales the application to fit the browser viewport when enabled. Cypress always coerces it to true for runner capture. |
timeout |
responseTimeout |
Maximum time for the screenshot command to resolve. |
overwrite |
false |
Whether to overwrite a duplicate screenshot filename instead of creating a numbered duplicate. |
onBeforeScreenshot |
null |
Callback before a non-failure screenshot. For an element capture it receives the element; otherwise it receives the document. |
onAfterScreenshot |
null |
Callback after a non-failure screenshot. It receives the captured element or document and screenshot properties, including the saved path and dimensions. |
Crop, mask or add space around an element
Crop a page capture with clip
Use clip to keep a rectangular pixel region of the final image. Its coordinates and dimensions describe the crop, not a CSS selector.
cy.screenshot('header-region', {
capture: 'viewport',
clip: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 900, height: 180 }
})
Black out matching content with blackout
Pass selectors as an array when you need to obscure matching page elements in an applicable capture:

cy.screenshot('account-page', {
capture: 'viewport',
blackout: ['[data-testid="account-number"]']
})
Do not assume that blackout applies to runner captures. Cypress Cloud separately documents controls for limiting screenshot and replay data; these are distinct from the command’s blackout option. Check the intended capture mode and controls before relying on masking to protect sensitive data. Cypress Cloud data controls.
Add padding to a DOM element capture
padding changes the area around an element screenshot, not a page capture. It accepts one number or up to four numbers in CSS shorthand order.
cy.get('[data-testid="status-card"]').screenshot('status-card', {
padding: [12, 20, 12, 20]
})
Make captures more repeatable
Cypress screenshots are asynchronous, so the application can change after the command is issued and before the image is captured. The default disableTimersAndAnimations: true reduces movement by stopping JavaScript timers and CSS animations during capture, but it does not make the operation instantaneous or freeze every source of application state.

For example, hide a changing clock before capture and restore it afterward with the callbacks:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorscy.screenshot('stable-dashboard', {
onBeforeScreenshot($el) {
$el.find('.clock').hide()
},
onAfterScreenshot($el) {
$el.find('.clock').show()
}
})
The callbacks do not run for failure screenshots. Set disableTimersAndAnimations: false only when the animated or timed state itself is what you need to capture.
Choose a filename and find the image
Without a custom filename, Cypress names the image using the spec and test. A custom filename replaces that suite-and-test naming. Cypress writes images below the configured screenshots folder, which defaults to cypress/screenshots, with the spec-relative directory structure. The screenshots and videos guide explains the output location.

- By default, a duplicate name gets a numeric suffix rather than replacing the existing image.
- Set
overwrite: trueto replace an existing file with the same name. - Failure screenshots append
(failed)to the default test name.
cy.screenshot('checkout-final', { overwrite: true })
Automatic screenshots when tests fail
During cypress run, Cypress takes screenshots automatically when a test fails by default. It does not automatically take failure screenshots in cypress open. Failure screenshots can be disabled with screenshotOnRunFailure: false in Cypress configuration or screenshot defaults. See the configuration reference for configuration options.
// cypress.config.js
const { defineConfig } = require('cypress')
module.exports = defineConfig({
screenshotOnRunFailure: false
})
Use this when failure images are not wanted in run artifacts; keep the default behavior when those images help diagnose failed tests. A failure capture is a runner capture, even if the manual screenshot settings choose another mode.

Troubleshooting common screenshot issues
- The image only shows the visible screen. The command may be using
capture: 'viewport'. Choosecapture: 'fullPage'to capture below-the-fold content. - Sticky content appears multiple times. This can happen with full-page capture because Cypress scrolls and stitches the page. Try a viewport capture if one screen is sufficient.
- A failure image includes the Command Log. Failure screenshots are coerced to
runner. Do not expect a manual capture mode to determine the failure image’s scope. - A sensitive element is still visible. Confirm that the selector matches the content and that the capture mode supports blackout; the API says blackout does not apply to runner captures.
- The UI differs between runs. Capture is asynchronous. Disable timers and animations (the default), and use callbacks to hide known changing elements; these controls reduce some variability but do not freeze all application state.
- An existing image was not replaced. Cypress defaults to
overwrite: false; set it totrueif replacement is intended. - No automatic failure image appears. Automatic failure screenshots apply to
cypress run, notcypress open. Check the run mode and whetherscreenshotOnRunFailurehas been disabled.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot outside a Cypress test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. Its screenshot options use parameter names familiar from other screenshot APIs, which makes switching easy. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use cy.screenshot() to capture a single element?
Yes. Chain it from a Cypress command that yields the DOM element, such as cy.get('[data-testid="receipt"]').screenshot().
Does cy.screenshot() return the screenshot image?
It yields its original subject, not the image file. The screenshot is saved in the configured screenshots folder.
