Start by checking which encoder OBS is using and whether OBS reports encoding or rendering lag; a high system CPU percentage alone does not identify the cause. If OBS is using x264, try a compatible hardware encoder. Then, if needed, reduce output frame rate or resolution, simplify the scene, and inspect how the playlist enters OBS. Change one thing at a time and test with representative playback before relying on a long-running stream.

Find the bottleneck before changing settings

A continuous playlist stream can put different demands on a computer depending on whether the playlist is a Browser Source, a Media or VLC Source, or desktop capture. The encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity also affect system requirements; OBS notes that requirements vary considerably across these factors (OBS System Requirements).

  1. Record a baseline: note system CPU use when idle, while the playlist plays, and while OBS is streaming.
  2. Open OBS Stats: check for encoding lag, rendering lag, and dropped frames. These indicators help distinguish an overloaded encoder or renderer from an upload or connection problem.
  3. Write down the setup: note the active encoder, output resolution and FPS, operating system, and playlist source type.
  4. Change one variable: repeat the same representative playback and stream test after each change, then compare CPU use and OBS Stats.

This process identifies which part of your setup is contributing to the load. Without your computer specifications, OBS log, scene, and source configuration, no single setting can be identified as the cause or promised to reduce CPU by a specific amount.

Reduce the encoder’s CPU workload

Try a compatible hardware encoder

In OBS, open Settings → Output and check the streaming encoder. If it is x264, which uses software encoding on the CPU, try a hardware encoder available on your system—such as NVENC, AMF, QSV, or VideoToolbox—then run the same test. OBS explains that modern hardware encoders shift encoding work to specialized GPU hardware (OBS Hardware Encoding). Availability and support depend on hardware and operating system, so there is no universally available encoder.

On Apple Silicon, OBS documents VideoToolbox for streaming. Its guidance says VideoToolbox streaming is not supported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate limitations for most streaming services; use x264 on those systems instead (OBS Hardware Encoding). Compare CPU use and OBS Stats after switching: a hardware encoder may ease CPU load, but the actual effect depends on the machine and workload.

Lower output frame rate or resolution if necessary

If encoding or rendering still struggles, lower the workload to a level that suits the content and audience. In OBS, adjust the output resolution and FPS in Settings → Video, then confirm the streaming output settings in Settings → Output. OBS recommends trying 30 FPS if 60 FPS is not working; fewer frames can reduce rendering and encoding work (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting). Reducing resolution also changes the picture viewers receive. Lowering the base canvas resolution is more disruptive and OBS reserves it for severe resource constraints.

Do not lower bitrate alone expecting it to fix CPU usage: bitrate concerns stream delivery, not the core amount of video encoding work. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 FPS and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 FPS (YouTube live encoder settings). Those are platform recommendations for delivery; they do not guarantee a CPU reduction. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test.

Simplify the OBS scene

  • Remove sources you do not need. OBS notes that sources may use resources even when they are not visible, so trim unused items and keep scenes focused.
  • Use appropriately sized media. Avoid files or source dimensions far larger than the stream output requires.
  • Audit filters. Temporarily disable filters to see whether one is expensive. Apply processing to the smallest suitable source rather than the entire scene, and avoid keeping heavily filtered sources active when they are not needed.
  • Keep scene collections manageable. Separate large, unrelated collections when that helps keep the active setup focused.

These are OBS troubleshooting measures, not guaranteed performance gains: the result varies by project and computer. Test after each adjustment so that you can retain the visual elements you need.

Check how the playlist is brought into OBS

There is no universally best playlist source without knowing how your playlist is configured. A YouTube page loaded in a Browser Source is not the same as a local video playlist played through an OBS media source, and changing source type can change playback behavior. Compare performance only after confirming that the replacement preserves the playback you need.

If the playlist uses Browser Source

Browser Sources can be resource intensive. OBS recommends reducing their viewport dimensions to the minimum practical size, reducing unnecessary browser sources, and considering a lower custom frame rate when it will not harm the content. You can also enable the option to shut down a browser source when it is not visible (OBS Browser Source). Test the playlist after changing its size or frame rate to ensure its appearance and playback remain acceptable.

If the content is local media or a static overlay

For local audio or video, consider OBS Media Source or VLC Video Source where appropriate; for a static image, use Image Source. OBS recommends these source types for suitable content instead of rendering it through a browser (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting). This advice does not mean that a local source will preserve the behavior of an embedded YouTube playlist.

Check YouTube delivery settings and test stability

Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then verify the result against your encoder and YouTube’s live settings. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 FPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds; support depends on the selected ingest protocol and encoder (YouTube live encoder settings). These are delivery-compatibility settings, not CPU-saving steps. YouTube also transcodes live streams for different viewer formats.

  1. Test the full path with representative audio, motion, sources, and filters before the actual continuous stream.
  2. Watch OBS Stats for encoding lag, rendering lag, and dropped frames, and monitor YouTube stream health.
  3. Observe the setup for a longer period than a brief preview if the planned broadcast is continuous. This is prudent operational practice, not a stated platform requirement.
  4. If you change an encoder, source, resolution, or FPS, test again before leaving the stream unattended.

OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before streaming (OBS streaming guide); a longer observation period for continuous use is a practical extension of that advice.

Common symptoms and what to try

What you see What to check next
High CPU, but no OBS encoding or rendering lag Identify which process or source is using CPU; compare idle, playlist-only, and streaming measurements before changing output quality.
Encoding lag while streaming Check whether x264 is active. Try a supported hardware encoder, then test a lower output FPS or resolution if needed.
Rendering lag or stutter when a playlist appears Inspect Browser Sources, source dimensions, filters, and unused sources. Reduce the browser viewport or test a suitable Media, VLC, or Image Source.
Stream health or dropped-frame problems without high CPU Check upload reliability and YouTube stream health; changing encoding settings alone may not resolve a network bottleneck.
A new source setting reduces CPU but changes playback or appearance Restore the previous setting or source and test an alternative that preserves the playlist behavior you need.
