For capturing a webpage as an image through an API, Browserless is the more direct fit: its current REST API accepts a URL and screenshot options at /screenshot and returns image data. Cloudinary is primarily a media-management and delivery platform, but it also documents website screenshots through its url2png delivery type, which requires the URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on. If you need both capture and image processing, the services can fit different stages of one workflow.
ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to consider
If your main requirement is a screenshot API rather than a broader media pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it returns website screenshots or PDFs and bills only clean shots, not bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, or cache hits.
Browserless and Cloudinary serve different core purposes. This comparison covers their documented capabilities; it is not a hands-on speed, fidelity, reliability, or total-cost benchmark.
How Browserless and Cloudinary differ
| Workflow need | Documented fit | What the documentation supports |
|---|---|---|
| Navigate to a webpage and return an image in one HTTP request | Browserless | Its REST screenshot endpoint accepts a URL or inline HTML and returns image bytes. |
| Capture a full page, viewport, or selected element | Browserless | The screenshot API documents full-page and selector options along with image format, quality, viewport, and clipping controls. |
| Interact with a page before capture or use browser automation code | Browserless | Its examples describe browser connections using Puppeteer or Playwright. |
| Transform, optimize, manage, and deliver image assets | Cloudinary | Cloudinary’s API overview and transformation documentation cover the media lifecycle. |
| Generate a website screenshot within a Cloudinary workflow | Cloudinary URL2PNG add-on | Cloudinary’s delivery-types documentation lists url2png and says it requires the URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on. |
Use Browserless when capture is the main task
Browserless documents a direct HTTP workflow for rendering a webpage and returning an image. Its current REST API uses a POST request to /screenshot, a token query parameter, a JSON body, and an image response. Consult the current screenshot API reference for the supported request fields and authentication requirements.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Basic request shape
The API accepts either a page URL or inline HTML, not both in the same request. A JSON request can include capture settings such as fullPage and type, as well as navigation and wait configuration. The following is the documented request shape; supply your token and target URL, and check the current API reference for any account-specific requirements.
curl -X POST "https://chrome.browserless.io/screenshot?token=YOUR_TOKEN"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"url":"https://example.com","options":{"fullPage":true,"type":"png"}}'
--output page.png
Capture controls to plan for
- Full page versus viewport: use a full-page capture for content extending beyond the initial viewport; omit it when you only need the visible viewport.
- Element capture: use the documented selector option when the deliverable should contain one page element rather than the entire page.
- Format and quality: choose the image type and quality appropriate to the output format and downstream use.
- Viewport and clipping: set the dimensions or clip area needed for the desired composition.
- Dynamic content: configure navigation or wait behavior so the page has time to reach the intended state.
- Lazy-loaded content: Browserless recommends scrolling before capture to trigger lazy loading; its API documents
scrollPagefor this purpose. - Request control: the API documentation describes request rejection options for excluding unwanted requests.
- Inline HTML: send
htmlinstead ofurlif you want to render supplied markup directly.
When one REST request is not enough
If the page requires clicks, form entry, or other interaction before capture—or if you already have browser automation code—Browserless documents WebSocket browser connections through Puppeteer or Playwright. That route offers a browser automation workflow rather than limiting the task to a single screenshot operation. See Browserless’s screenshot examples for connection patterns.
Do not base a new integration on the older BaaS v1 screenshot page: Browserless marks it deprecated. Use the current REST API documentation instead: deprecated BaaS v1 screenshot documentation.

Use Cloudinary when the media lifecycle matters
Cloudinary’s central strength is working with media assets: upload or manage them, apply transformations through URLs or SDKs, optimize them, and deliver them through its CDN. Those capabilities can be useful after a screenshot has been created, for example when an application needs a managed delivery and transformation workflow. The relevant capabilities are described in its API overview and image transformations guide.
Cloudinary can generate screenshots through URL2PNG
Cloudinary’s delivery-types documentation includes url2png, which enables website screenshot generation through the URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on. This is a real screenshot option, so it would be inaccurate to say Cloudinary cannot take website screenshots. Before designing around it, confirm that the add-on is currently available to your account and check its billing and usage terms.
Cloudinary says transformation operations count toward plan usage. Its documentation does not establish a comparable current screenshot price against Browserless, and the cited materials do not establish comparable quotas or the URL2PNG add-on cost. Check your account’s current plan and transformation documentation before estimating usage; do not assume transformation units and screenshot requests are equivalent billing measures.

Choose by the work your application needs
- Choose Browserless when the central operation is browser navigation followed by a screenshot, especially if you need full-page or element capture, viewport and wait controls, or browser interaction.
- Choose Cloudinary’s URL2PNG route when screenshot generation needs to sit inside a Cloudinary media workflow and the add-on is available on terms that suit your account.
- Use both stages when a browser capture API best handles rendering but a separate media platform is still useful for managing, transforming, optimizing, or delivering the resulting image.
- Check pricing before committing if cost or volume drives the decision. The documentation cited here does not provide a current, apples-to-apples comparison of Browserless and Cloudinary prices, quota units, performance, or total cost.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The image is blank or shows an access-denied page
Browserless notes that blank images, CAPTCHA pages, and access-denied responses can indicate bot detection. Its documentation points to the /unblock API for such cases, but that is a vendor-documented option, not a guarantee that every protected site can be captured successfully. See the Browserless REST API documentation for its REST API offerings.
Lazy-loaded images or sections are missing
Scrolling can trigger content that loads only as it approaches the viewport. Configure the documented scrollPage behavior before capture and confirm the page has reached the needed state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The screenshot is cut off or includes the wrong area
Check whether the request is configured for the full page or only the viewport. For a specific region, review the clipping settings; for a single component, use the selector capture option. Also verify the requested viewport dimensions.

The page is captured before it is ready
Use the API’s wait or navigation controls to allow the page to reach the intended state. Pages with asynchronous content may need a more specific wait condition than simply waiting for initial navigation.
The request body is rejected
Check that the JSON is valid, that you are sending either url or html rather than both, and that the request method, content type, token, and endpoint match the current REST API reference.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot with one GET request and offers PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. The following cURL example saves a WebP screenshot; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

FAQ
Can I send HTML instead of a URL to Browserless?
Yes. Its screenshot API accepts inline HTML instead of a URL; do not include both in the same request.
Are Browserless and Cloudinary mutually exclusive?
No. One can handle browser capture and the other can manage or transform the resulting media, if that division fits your workflow.
