To convert a webpage URL to a PNG with HTML/CSS to Image, send a JSON POST request to https://hcti.io/v1/image using HTTP Basic authentication. Use your API ID as the username, your API key as the password, and the fully qualified page URL as the JSON url value. PNG is the default output, and the response provides a generated image URL.
Make a URL-to-PNG request with cURL
First, get your API ID and API key from the HTML/CSS to Image dashboard. Store them as server-side environment variables rather than placing credentials in browser code. Then run:

When creating a screenshot from a webpage, use url.
Read and download the generated PNG
The API responds with JSON containing the generated image URL. Read that URL from the response and make a separate HTTP request to download the image or use the URL in your application. If you do not specify an output extension, the default format is PNG. The generated image URL remains available while your account is active, according to the Using the API guide.

The documented output formats also include JPG, WebP, and PDF. Check the API guide for the current method of specifying a format if you need something other than PNG.
Use the API from an application
The vendor’s example-code guide documents the REST request shape. Keep credentials in a trusted server-side environment, and parse the JSON response to obtain the generated image URL before downloading or embedding it. The following language-neutral outline describes the flow:

- Parse the response JSON and use its generated image URL to download or display the PNG.
See the official Example code guide for its language-specific examples. Avoid treating the returned URL as permanent storage: the API guide ties its availability to the account remaining active.
Useful request options
The API accepts JSON or form data. For URL screenshots, url is the input; html is an alternative input rather than an additional requirement. When using url, you can optionally provide css to inject styles into the page.

Capture a page that requires authorization
HTML/CSS to Image does not automate an interactive login flow. For a page you are authorized to access, the vendor documents passing a short-lived session cookie or authorization token through headers. Custom headers are restricted to the requested URL’s origin and any additional origins explicitly allowed by the service. Use short-lived, least-privilege credentials; avoid sending a long-lived or broadly privileged token in a screenshot request. Protect API credentials and generated links
- Keep the API key on your server. Anyone who obtains it may be able to perform operations allowed by its permissions.
- Use a key scoped to the operations your application needs.
- Do not expose the API key in browser-side JavaScript or public source code.
- Remember that a generated image URL can be requested by anyone who obtains it; handle it according to the sensitivity of the captured page.
Alternative: create a signed image URL
The service also documents a GET endpoint that creates and returns an image on demand. This flow uses an HMAC SHA-256 token derived from the exact encoded query string and your API key. Parameter order, encoding, and whitespace affect the signature, so use an official client helper where possible. Generate the signature on your server rather than exposing the API key. A completed signed URL can be used in a browser, but anyone who holds it can request the image it authorizes. The signing details are in the signed URL documentation.
