Cloudinary’s URL2PNG add-on is documented for taking screenshots of public websites; its documentation does not establish that it can sign in to an interactive, password-protected webpage. For a page that requires a login form, browser cookies, or an authenticated application session, capture it in an authorized browser session first. Then upload the resulting image to Cloudinary if you need Cloudinary storage or image transformations.
Choose the right workflow for the protected content
- A public webpage: Cloudinary URL2PNG can generate a screenshot from a website URL. The add-on must be registered on your Cloudinary account, and its transformation must be signed or eagerly generated unless your Console settings allow unsigned add-on transformations. - A webpage behind an interactive login: Use an authorized browser workflow to sign in and capture the rendered page, then upload the screenshot if needed. - An image or video protected by HTTP Basic Authentication: Cloudinary Fetch supports fetching certain remote image or video URLs with Basic Authentication. This retrieves a media file; it does not render a webpage or complete a login form. Cloudinary Fetch documentation
Capture an interactive page with an authorized browser session
For an application page, use a browser automation workflow that can sign in with authorization and capture the content after it loads. This example uses Playwright for Node.js. It demonstrates the browser-side portion only: choose selectors and login steps that match your site, use an approved test account, and keep credentials in environment variables rather than source code.
Install Playwright
- Install Node.js, then create a project and add Playwright:
npm init -yfollowed bynpm install playwright. - Install the Chromium browser used by Playwright:
npx playwright install chromium. - Set the target URL and credentials in your environment. For example, in a Unix-like shell:

The example assumes the site has the shown form fields and a post-login element with the specified test ID; those are placeholders to replace with the actual authorized site’s selectors. If the site uses single sign-on, multifactor authentication, a CAPTCHA, or a different login flow, adapt the automation to the site’s permitted process rather than trying to bypass its controls. Upload the captured file to Cloudinary
For server-side uploads, Cloudinary documents authenticated Upload API requests using Basic Authentication with an API key and API secret, or signature-based authentication. Keep the API secret on the server; never put it in browser or other public client-side code. Use Cloudinary Fetch only for directly protected media
Cloudinary Fetch can retrieve supported remote images or videos protected by HTTP Basic Authentication by including credentials in the remote URL. That approach is not a substitute for a browser login: it does not establish that Cloudinary will enter credentials into an HTML form, maintain a website session, or render content available only after interactive authentication. Troubleshoot failed captures and uploads
- The URL2PNG output does not show signed-in content: URL2PNG’s documented use is public website screenshots, and its documentation does not establish interactive login or session reuse. Capture the page in an authorized browser session, then upload the image if needed.
- Cloudinary rejects a URL2PNG transformation: Check that URL2PNG is registered for the account and that the transformation is signed or eagerly generated, unless unsigned add-on transformations are enabled in Console settings. - Fetch returns an error for a protected media URL: Check whether Fetch is enabled and whether the request must be signed; confirm the host is allowed by any domain restriction; verify URL encoding; and check the redirect chain, since Cloudinary documents a five-redirect limit. - The browser script times out after submitting the form: Confirm that the selectors match the actual login page and wait for a reliable element that appears after successful authentication. A redirect, multifactor prompt, or site-specific login flow may require a different authorized procedure.
- The Upload API request exposes a secret: Move the upload to a trusted server and remove the API secret from public code, client bundles, and URLs. Cloudinary explicitly warns against exposing the API secret in public client-side code. Cloudinary Upload API reference
