Cloudinary generally counts an image transformation when it generates a new derived asset—not each time a visitor requests an image. A chain of image edits usually counts as one transformation, and later requests for the same cached transformation URL do not count again. Cloudinary’s documentation covers its Image & Video API and Programmable Media; it does not establish a separate website-screenshot pricing meter or describe Cloudinary as a webpage-capture service.
What counts as a Cloudinary transformation?
A transformation is the generation of a derived version of an asset that the account did not already have. Typical examples include resizing, cropping, format conversion, and applying effects through transformation instructions in a URL. Cloudinary says that image transformations—including complex chains—typically count as one transformation when they generate one derived image. Cloudinary’s transformation-counting documentation describes the rule and its exceptions.
The key measure is the number of distinct derivatives generated, not the number of image requests or page views. A URL can contain multiple comma-separated parameters or a sequence of transformation components. On the first request, Cloudinary generates the derivative; subsequent requests to that already-cached transformation URL do not count again under the documented standard rule. Cloudinary’s image transformation guide explains this generation-and-cache behavior.
How common cases affect usage
| Case | Typical transformation-count effect |
|---|---|
| A new derivative is generated from an original image | Ordinarily one image transformation, even when several edits are chained together. |
| The same derived URL is requested after its derivative is cached | No additional transformation count under the standard cached-URL rule. |
| A different parameter combination creates a distinct output | It may generate another derivative and count again. |
| An eager transformation is requested to warm the cache | It can count when the derivative is generated; it is not free just because a visitor did not trigger generation. |
| An incoming transformation processes an upload | It can consume transformation credits during upload processing. |
For an estimate, count the unique output variants your application is likely to generate for each original—not just the number of URLs or requests. Include eager outputs and upload-time processing, then account for options that can produce multiple variants.

Can automatic format or responsive settings create more derivatives?
Yes. The one-chain/one-image rule describes a typical case, not a guarantee that every transformation URL produces only one derivative over time. Cloudinary documents cases where automatic selection can yield different outputs:
f_autocan produce derivatives in different formats for different browsers.- Automatic pixel-density selection can generate different density versions.
- Automatic width selection can produce outputs based on viewport sizes and breakpoints; the number can vary with the responsive configuration.
When estimating usage for these settings, consider the distinct variants the configuration may generate rather than assuming one permanent output per URL. Cloudinary lists these cases in its transformation-counting documentation.

Other counting exceptions to know
- Transformation tools in the console: Previewing can occur without quota impact, but downloading, opening a generated result in a new tab, or saving it can create a counted derivative.
- Asset analysis: Some analysis operations through the Explicit API count as a transformation.
- Add-ons: An add-on triggered by transformation parameters can be counted in addition to the normal derivative.
- Asset changes: Some changes can delete dependent derived assets. A later request may then need to generate the derivative again.
These are operation-specific rules. Check the current Cloudinary counting documentation for the particular API call or workflow you use.
How transformation counts fit into Cloudinary pricing
For Cloudinary Free and self-service paid plans, transformations, storage, and bandwidth draw from a shared credit pool; transformation usage is not the only claim on that allowance. Cloudinary’s billing guide states that one credit is equivalent to 1,000 transformations in the documented model. It also says the Free plan includes 25 monthly credits. The pricing page displayed Free at $0 when accessed on October 3, 2026. These figures describe the cited plan model, not a guarantee that all credits are available for transformations after storage and delivery usage. Check Cloudinary’s current pricing page and your account for current terms.

Enterprise and other custom plans may use units rather than the standard credit model. Cloudinary lists one unit as one million transformations or specified storage and bandwidth allocations. Video transformations are measured by seconds processed at a rate that depends on resolution, so the typical image rule should not be applied to video. Your plan and contract determine the applicable limits and overage terms; consult the Cloudinary Console’s Billing view or your contract rather than assuming a universal price per transformation. See the billing guide for the documented models.
Does this mean Cloudinary has a website-screenshot price?
Not based on the cited documentation. The Cloudinary pages describe image transformation and billing rules, not a distinct website screenshot endpoint or screenshot-specific pricing meter. If you already have a screenshot as an image asset and process it with Cloudinary, the image transformation rules above are relevant to that processing. They do not establish a price for capturing a webpage in the first place.
