First identify which BrowserStack product made it: Percy’s managed rendering runs Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on Linux, while local Chrome uses the Windows rendering stack. That difference can affect text, form controls, and scrollbars without indicating a page-code regression. To compare operating systems deliberately, configure the platform and browser in BrowserStack Automate.
First identify the BrowserStack screenshot pipeline
Record whether the image came from Percy, Automate, Live, or the Screenshots API. These are not interchangeable environments, and “Chrome screenshot” alone does not describe where or how it was rendered.
- Percy: BrowserStack says its managed Chrome, Firefox, and Edge rendering runs on Linux. Its browser versions and operating environment are managed and updated over time. Check the browser information for the Percy project rather than inferring the operating system from the browser name. BrowserStack: Cross-browser visual testing.
- Automate: Use explicit operating-system and browser settings when you need a controlled cross-OS comparison.
- Live or Screenshots API: Record the product and capture settings too; the API documentation lists operating system, browser, resolution, quality, and wait time as relevant parameters. BrowserStack Screenshots API.
BrowserStack’s documentation explains the core mismatch: “Because Chrome, Firefox, and Edge render on Linux, text in these browsers can appear different from the same page viewed on a Windows or macOS machine.”
Record and align the environments
Before interpreting a visual diff, make a small environment record for each image. Compare values, not just the browser label.

Match the resolution and capture conditions
Set Automate resolution before the test
BrowserStack’s Selenium guide documents 1920x1080 as the default desktop resolution. Supported resolution values depend on the Windows version, and the resolution must be set at the start of the test; it cannot be changed during runtime. Consult the guide for the relevant platform’s accepted values: BrowserStack desktop resolutions.
Resolution is the desktop screen setting, not a guarantee that the browser window or webpage viewport matches your local capture. Check all three dimensions before comparing layout.

Keep the page state consistent
Use the same URL and route, equivalent content and scroll position, and the same readiness condition. Keep viewport versus full-page capture and image-quality settings aligned. The Screenshots API documents wait_time and quality; BrowserStack’s Screenshots FAQ also lists delays, timeouts, full-page output, quality, and repeated elements as troubleshooting subjects. Debug one variable at a time
- Label both images with their product, operating system, browser/version, resolution, viewport, and capture method.
- Make the URL, page state, scroll position, capture mode, wait condition, and output quality equivalent.
- Compare the same browser version across operating systems. Then compare the same operating system across browser versions.
- Only after those checks, investigate remaining resolution or timing differences.
- If changes remain only between operating systems and concern fonts, native form controls, or scrollbars, treat them as plausible OS-rendering differences. Confirm whether they affect the intended experience before changing page code.
Choose the BrowserStack path that answers the question
- For Percy visual checks across browsers, interpret diffs with its managed Linux rendering environment in mind.
- For deliberate OS-behavior comparisons, configure the OS and browser in Automate. BrowserStack says to specify
os,osVersion,browserName, andbrowserVersion. - For the Screenshots API, treat its documented configuration fields as useful clues, but verify current availability and supported browser/OS combinations before depending on a particular combination. The documentation includes historical examples and output.
Troubleshooting common mismatches
Text differs, but layout is otherwise close
Check the operating system first. BrowserStack identifies system-font differences as a reason text can look different across OSes. Compare on the same OS before treating the diff as a CSS defect.

Form controls or scrollbars look different
These can reflect native OS rendering. Verify with a same-OS comparison; do not assume a regression solely because the controls differ between Windows and Linux.
Elements wrap or move unexpectedly
Check desktop resolution, browser-window size, and page viewport separately. A mismatched dimension can change available layout width even when the URL and browser are the same.

Images differ intermittently or show repeated content
Align the wait/readiness condition, scroll position, and capture mode. BrowserStack’s FAQ specifically flags delays, timeouts, full-page screenshots, and repeated elements as areas to check.
A chosen Automate resolution cannot be applied
Confirm that the value is supported for the selected Windows version and set it before the test begins. BrowserStack says desktop resolution cannot be changed after runtime has started.
