Use BrowserStack Percy to capture the same page in selected browsers, compare each render with an approved baseline, and review browser-specific differences before approving a change. Choose Percy-managed browser settings for a convenient managed browser set; use BrowserStack Automate when you need to specify the operating system and browser versions yourself.

Choose how to select browsers

Percy offers two approaches, depending on how much control you need over the rendering environment.

Use Percy-managed browser settings for a managed set

For new projects, BrowserStack documents Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari as default browser options. Percy manages and updates the available browser versions and operating systems. You select browsers, but you do not choose the underlying operating system in this mode. See BrowserStack’s cross-browser visual testing documentation for current settings and availability.

Use Automate when OS and version matter

If your test must cover a specific operating system, OS version, browser, and browser version, configure those dimensions through BrowserStack Automate’s platform configuration. Percy’s documentation says to include all four: OS name, OS version, browser name, and browser version. This is the better fit when you are validating a known customer environment or investigating a difference that may be caused by the OS rather than the browser alone.

BrowserStack describes Automate and App Automate as routes to broader browser, viewport, and device coverage. Confirm the current framework and platform support before designing a matrix; available combinations can change.

Capture comparable page states

For a useful comparison, each browser needs to render the same page in a comparable state. Keep the URL, application data, login state, viewport, and capture timing consistent across runs. Otherwise, a diff may show content or timing changes rather than a browser rendering issue.

  1. Configure the browser set in Percy project settings, or configure the required OS and browser dimensions in Automate.
  2. Run your visual test so Percy captures a page snapshot.
  3. Let Percy render that snapshot in each selected browser. Each browser produces its own screenshot and comparison.
  4. Check the run’s screenshot usage: each browser snapshot counts toward monthly usage. BrowserStack does not establish current plan prices or allowances in the cited cross-browser documentation, so check its live account and pricing information before estimating cost.

BrowserStack supports a BrowserStack SDK route, which combines functional and visual testing in its workflow, and a Percy SDK route for manual integration with supported application and end-to-end testing setups. Choose based on your existing test stack, and confirm current framework support in BrowserStack’s supported SDKs documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-off screenshot or a simple capture endpoint, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server—not a replacement for Percy’s browser-by-browser baseline review. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Compare each browser with the right baseline

A baseline is an earlier approved render. Percy selects a base build according to the project’s baseline strategy, so a diff is meaningful only when the comparison is against the intended approved state. BrowserStack documents two approval scopes:

Baseline strategy Approval scope Useful when
Git baseline management Whole build You want approval at the build level.
Visual Git Individual snapshots You want to approve snapshots independently.

When you add a browser, its first run has no historical baseline for that browser. The new browser needs a baseline from a subsequent build before Percy can provide a historical comparison for it. See BrowserStack’s baseline management guide.

Review and decide whether to approve

Inspect results browser by browser. In Test Companion’s web visual-analysis workflow, reviewers can use side-by-side, overlay, and diff views, and switch among captured browsers and widths. The interface helps expose where pixels differ; it does not determine whether a difference is correct.

  1. Open the visual result for the build and choose a browser snapshot.
  2. Use the available comparison views to locate the changed area and understand its extent.
  3. Check whether the change is intended, a genuine regression, or a rendering-environment difference.
  4. Approve only the intentional changes. If you find a regression, leave the build unapproved, fix the application, and run the test again.

Approval belongs to the reviewer. It changes what Percy treats as an accepted visual state; it should not be used merely to clear a failing diff. BrowserStack describes the visual-analysis workflow in its web visual analysis guide and its broader visual analysis documentation.

Tell rendering differences from application regressions

A browser-specific difference can be the regression your test is meant to catch. It can also reflect the rendering environment. BrowserStack specifically identifies system fonts, form controls, and scrollbars as examples of OS-level differences. In Percy-managed mode, the underlying operating systems are managed and not user-selectable; use Automate configuration when explicit OS comparison is required.

Percy’s managed-browser interface identifies the browser name and version, while BrowserStack updates the underlying managed environment over time. When a diff appears, check the browser and version shown for the capture and consider whether an environment update or native control accounts for it before changing application code.

Set up a reliable comparison workflow

  • Keep capture inputs stable. Use the same page, data, state, viewport, and timing in every run so that a browser comparison isolates rendering differences.
  • Pick the approval scope deliberately. Choose whole-build Git approval or per-snapshot Visual Git approval to match how your team reviews changes.
  • Budget for browser coverage. Each selected browser adds a screenshot counted toward monthly usage. Check current account terms rather than relying on an old allowance or price.
  • Prefer broad coverage where appropriate. BrowserStack recommends verifying the full page for broad visual coverage and using Percy’s Recommended match level for routine comparisons. These are vendor recommendations, not independent comparative test results.
  • Keep the integration adaptable. BrowserStack recommends isolating screenshot calls in a wrapper so integration changes remain localized, and using the BrowserStack device grid for cross-platform checks.

Troubleshoot common comparison problems

A new browser has no useful diff

Cause: The browser has no prior approved render to compare against. Fix: Run another build so the new browser can establish a baseline, then compare subsequent captures against it.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The diff shows fonts, controls, or scrollbars changing

Cause: The difference may come from OS-level rendering rather than your CSS. Fix: Check which browser and version Percy reports and whether the selected environment is managed; if the OS itself must be controlled, configure OS and browser details through Automate.

Different content appears in different browser captures

Cause: The page state, data, viewport, or capture timing may not match across runs. Fix: Stabilize those inputs and rerun before treating the diff as a browser defect.

A genuine regression is marked as a change

Cause: Percy reports visual differences; it cannot decide whether they are acceptable. Fix: Do not approve the build. Correct the application and run the test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Framework configuration is unclear

Cause: SDK support and integration configuration depend on the framework and can change. Fix: Check the current supported SDKs page and the relevant integration documentation before adopting a sample configuration.
