How Percy’s visual-regression workflow works
- Capture pages or components in tests. Use a supported SDK or framework integration and connect the run to the relevant build or source-control context.
- Compare with approved snapshots. Percy compares the new renderings with prior approved baselines to surface changes in areas such as layout, styling, fonts, or colors.
- Review the differences. Team members inspect visual changes and can request revisions or approve them.
- Feed review status back into the team workflow. Builds may be tied to pull requests and commit metadata, with approvals able to update source-control status. Teams can use this review process to require visual changes to be checked before merging.
Visual comparison answers whether appearance changed; it does not establish that the page still behaves correctly. Keep functional assertions for behavior such as navigation, form submission, and data handling.
Percy on Web or Percy on Automate?
Percy on Web
Percy on Web is the standalone visual-testing route. It captures DOM snapshots and page assets, then reconstructs and renders them on Percy infrastructure using a selection of current browsers. The documented limitation is that it cannot capture authenticated assets. Percy on Automate
Percy on Automate takes screenshots during a BrowserStack Automate browser session. Authenticated sessions can work, but the test session and configuration need to provide that authentication. This option is relevant when coverage must specify desktop or mobile operating systems, devices, and browsers rather than rely on Percy on Web’s browser selection. Budget for both Percy and Automate licenses.
The project types also differ in pseudo-class support and test-platform support. Those details are application- and integration-sensitive; verify the current SDK/framework documentation for the project before committing to an implementation.

How Percy screenshot usage is counted
Percy usage is based on rendered combinations, not simply the number of logical pages or components. BrowserStack’s billing documentation defines a screenshot as “a rendering of a page or component in an individual browser and responsive width combination.” For example, one page rendered in two browsers at three responsive widths produces six screenshots. Two pages rendered across those same combinations produce twelve screenshots, even if the interface groups the output under fewer snapshots.
Estimate usage by multiplying the pages or components captured by the browser and responsive-width combinations in each run, then by the number of runs you expect to keep. The official billing documentation lists 5,000 screenshots per month on the free plan and says the plan includes unlimited users and projects. It also says paid use above plan allocation can incur overage charges. Allowances and billing terms can change, so verify the live plan and overage details before purchase.
