Choose Loki if your visual tests are already organized as Storybook stories; choose BackstopJS if you need to test pages by URL and describe scenarios or interactions. They use different test inputs and review workflows, so neither is universally better. This comparison reflects the projects’ official documentation, not hands-on testing or a performance benchmark.

How the two tools define a test

Loki: a Storybook story

Loki is a visual regression tool built around Storybook. It captures stories from a running Storybook, compares them with reference images, and produces current and difference images for review. The documented workflow does not start the Storybook server for you; your Storybook or target simulator/emulator needs to be available. Loki’s getting-started guide recommends keeping reference images in the repository and notes Git LFS as an option. Loki project README · Loki getting started

BackstopJS: a URL and scenario

BackstopJS organizes tests around configured endpoints or documents, screen settings, selectors, and scenario steps. Its documentation describes capturing screenshots against approved references, setting mismatch thresholds, running interaction scripts, and reviewing reference, test, and difference images in an in-browser report. That structure suits page-level checks where the test inventory is a set of URLs and flows rather than a set of component stories. BackstopJS project README

Which one fits your project?

Decision point Loki BackstopJS
Where tests come from Existing Storybook stories Configured page URLs and scenarios
Storybook requirement Its documented workflow expects an accessible Storybook; the CI guide describes using a built Storybook artifact. The documentation centers on configured web endpoints and scenarios.
Interactions The documented flow emphasizes capturing stories and reviewing diffs. Scenario interaction scripts are documented.
Review workflow Inspect current and difference images, then approve intended reference updates. Inspect the visual report and approve expected changes.
Documented target environments The repository lists Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator; confirm support for your current release and configuration. The README describes Chrome Headless and integrated Docker rendering; confirm these fit your current release and constraints.

These are documented capabilities, not evidence that one tool is faster, more reliable, or easier in practice. Loki’s README states its aim of easy setup, low maintenance, reproducibility, CI use, and platform support; that is a project aim rather than an independently established outcome. Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use Loki when

  • Your components and states are already represented by Storybook stories.
  • You want visual references tied to that story inventory.
  • Your team can keep Storybook available for capture and own review of changed references.

Use BackstopJS when

  • Your checks are defined by page URLs rather than Storybook stories.
  • You need to specify scenario-level selectors or interaction steps.
  • An in-browser report and scenario-oriented review fit your team’s process.

What setup looks like

Set up Loki

The Loki getting-started guide, last updated 2024-08-27, lists Node 16 or later as a prerequisite. These setup details are version-sensitive, so verify them against the release you intend to install.

  1. Install Loki as a development dependency: yarn add loki --dev.
  2. Initialize its configuration: yarn loki init.
  3. Start or otherwise make your Storybook accessible. Loki does not start it for you.
  4. Create the initial reference images: yarn loki update.
  5. After code changes, capture and compare: yarn loki test.
  6. Inspect the differences and approve only intentional visual changes by updating the references.

The guide identifies Docker as optional for the chrome.docker target and GraphicsMagick as an option for the gm diff engine. It also documents React Native integration and simulator/emulator use. Check the current documentation before relying on those options. Loki getting started

Run Loki in CI

Loki’s CI guide describes building Storybook and running against that artifact. Its example is:

In this typical configuration, --requireReference makes missing reference images fail rather than silently establishing a new baseline. The CI guide was last updated 2024-08-27. Loki continuous integration

Plan for baselines, review, and CI

Both tools compare new captures with approved reference screenshots. Baseline creation is only the beginning: every genuine design change needs a review decision, and stale or incorrectly approved references can reduce the usefulness of future diffs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Assign review ownership. Decide who checks visual differences and who may approve baseline updates.
  • Make captures reproducible. Keep the browser/container, viewport, data, and rendering environment consistent where possible; otherwise environmental changes can create differences unrelated to the code change.
  • Test representative cases first. With Loki, sample stories that include varied states and layouts. With BackstopJS, sample URLs and interaction sequences that reflect the pages you need to protect.
  • Check CI failure behavior. Establish whether missing references, capture errors, and visual mismatches fail the job as you expect.
  • Confirm compatibility before committing to a setup. Check the current versions of Node, Storybook, browsers, and the selected tool against your environment.

Common problems and what to check

Loki cannot capture stories

First confirm that Storybook is running or that the built artifact is available at the configured URI. Loki’s documented workflow depends on an accessible Storybook and does not launch its server automatically.

Loki fails in CI because references are missing

With the documented --requireReference CI pattern, missing references are expected to fail. Generate and review an intentional baseline, then make the reference images available to the CI job.

Visual diffs appear after an environment change

Compare the capture environment, viewport, and target configuration with the one used to create the references. If you changed browser or container setup, treat that as a possible source of changed pixels before approving new baselines.

BackstopJS does not test the intended page flow

Review the configured endpoint, selectors, and scenario interaction steps against the page state you mean to capture. BackstopJS tests the scenarios you configure; a missing or incorrect step can leave the screenshot at the wrong state.

You are unsure which tool to adopt

Run a small trial with representative stories or scenarios in the actual CI environment. Compare the review burden, baseline churn, browser/container reproducibility, and compatibility with your stack. The available official documentation does not establish a general performance or reliability winner.

When a screenshot API is the better fit

Loki and BackstopJS are visual-regression workflows: they capture against references and support review of changes. If your need is instead to request a website screenshot as an image or PDF, a screenshot API is a different kind of tool. ScreenshotNeo is an option to try first for that API use case: its stated differentiators are consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup before capture, billing only for clean shots, and an MCP server for AI agents. It is not a substitute for Loki’s Storybook test inventory or BackstopJS’s scenario-and-baseline workflow.

ScreenshotNeo’s API and configuration details are in the documentation. Its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
