What Loki does—and what its license tells you
Loki is a visual regression testing tool for Storybook. It captures screenshots of stories and compares them with reference images so you can review visual changes. An open-source license is not a quote for the full cost of operating a test workflow. Infrastructure, storage, setup, and ongoing maintenance may have costs, but the cited documentation does not quantify them.
Where the operating cost can come from
Loki’s execution target and the infrastructure you already have affect what you may need to provision or maintain. The integration listing names Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulators, and Android emulators. To estimate yours, identify the target, CI or compute arrangement, expected test volume, image-retention approach, and maintenance time, then apply your current infrastructure prices.
What a Loki workflow involves
- Install Loki as a development dependency and initialize its configuration, following the getting-started instructions.
- Start Storybook yourself. Loki’s instructions state, “For loki to be able to access your stories you must start the storybook server.” Loki does not start it for you. Loki getting started
- Create reference screenshots, run the visual tests, and inspect the resulting diffs.
- When a difference is intentional, approve the updated reference images and commit them using your team’s repository workflow.
The storage and approval workflow matters to cost as well as maintenance: reference images need a place in your project and a deliberate process for accepting changes. Loki advanced usage

How Loki’s model differs from Storybook’s hosted option
Storybook documents an official visual-testing integration powered by Chromatic: stories are sent to cloud browsers for snapshots and comparison. Loki, by contrast, documents configurable execution targets, including local Chrome, Docker, AWS Lambda, and mobile simulators.
