For a substantial browser dependency tree, a Lambda container image is a practical starting point; a ZIP package can also work if its dependencies fit. AWS documents Lambda file processing and a Puppeteer-in-Lambda screenshot architecture, but the latter is not an AWS-tested PDF recipe, so validate the implementation with your own documents.
How the conversion works
A Lambda handler receives HTML or a reference to it, starts a packaged browser, loads the document, waits for the content it needs, and asks the browser to create a PDF. The function then returns the PDF bytes or stores them durably, commonly in S3. This combines AWS’s documented support for HTML-to-PDF file-processing workloads with its documented browser-packaging pattern; AWS’s Puppeteer example captures screenshots rather than PDFs. AWS’s file-processing guide names PDF creation from HTML or images as a Lambda use case, while AWS’s Puppeteer architecture example demonstrates a browser in a Lambda container.
The key engineering challenge is not the PDF call itself: Chromium and its native libraries must match Lambda’s Linux environment, runtime, and CPU architecture. Fonts, JavaScript, CSS, and network-loaded assets also affect the rendered result.
Choose ZIP or container image
| Decision | ZIP archive or layer | Container image |
|---|---|---|
| Dependency control | Package function code and dependencies; layers can hold reusable dependencies. | More direct control over operating-system and browser dependencies. |
| Browser packaging | Possible when browser binaries and dependencies fit the package approach and runtime constraints. | AWS’s Puppeteer example packages browser dependencies this way. |
| Build and update | Build a Lambda-compatible archive and verify native binaries against runtime and architecture. | Build and publish the image to ECR, then update the function image. |
| Switching later | A ZIP function remains ZIP. | An image-based function remains image-based; switching package type requires a new function. |
AWS supports both formats, and package type cannot be changed for an existing function. Choose based on the browser dependency footprint and how much control you need over the runtime. AWS Lambda container-image guidance and ZIP deployment guidance explain the respective approaches.

Build the function around Lambda’s constraints
Match the runtime and architecture
Select a currently supported Lambda runtime and architecture that your chosen Chromium distribution supports. Build native components for that target rather than assuming a local development binary will run unchanged in Lambda. Pin a compatible set of browser, automation-library, and base-image versions, and update them deliberately. AWS updates base images over time; do not copy an old example’s image tag verbatim.
Use a container image when dependencies need control
For a substantial browser installation, begin by evaluating an AWS Lambda base image and package the browser dependencies with the function. If you choose a different base image, include a Lambda runtime interface client. AWS documents a maximum uncompressed container-image size of 10 GB. See AWS’s container-image requirements.

Keep temporary files in /tmp
Lambda’s filesystem must be usable as read-only apart from the writable temporary directory. Configure ephemeral storage from 512 MB to 10,240 MB, adjustable in 1 MB increments, and use /tmp for transient browser profiles, downloaded assets, and generated PDFs. Set capacity based on the peak combined temporary-file size for your workload, then remove temporary files when they are no longer needed. Those storage limits are documented in AWS’s Lambda container-image documentation.
Set memory and timeout from representative runs
Measure with realistic HTML, fonts, images, external assets, and page counts. Tune memory and timeout to the slowest expected workload and its failure tolerance. AWS’s 256 MB and 15-second values on its file-processing page apply to a PDF-encryption example, not a Chromium conversion recommendation. The cited sources do not establish a conversion-speed benchmark, a practical maximum PDF size, or a universal memory setting.

Implement the rendering flow
- Accept a controlled input. Receive HTML or a permitted source reference. Validate size and input format before launching the browser.
- Launch the packaged browser. Use the browser executable and launch configuration supported by the exact Chromium package, runtime, and architecture you deployed.
- Load and render the document. Set the page content or navigate to the allowed source. Wait for the conditions your page actually requires; network idle is not always appropriate for pages with long-lived requests.
- Create the PDF. Configure output options such as page size, margins, and background printing according to the browser automation library version you pinned.
- Deliver the result. Return bytes if the invocation and response design support the expected size, or write the PDF to durable storage such as S3 and return a reference. Do not treat
/tmpas durable storage.
This is an implementation outline rather than tested code from AWS’s examples. The AWS file-processing guide demonstrates temporary files and S3 handling for PDF encryption, not Chromium rendering. Design the invocation and delivery contract for your application; the sources do not prescribe a specific API response format.
Protect the renderer and its inputs
- Do not allow arbitrary URLs to reach the browser without policy checks. A page can request internal services or metadata endpoints, so restrict destinations and network access.
- Set limits for HTML size, navigation duration, page count, and generated output appropriate to your service.
- Decide which scripts and external resources are permitted. Remote fonts and images can fail, change, or delay rendering.
- Use least-privilege IAM permissions, particularly when the function writes to S3 or accesses other services.
- Test fonts, print CSS, page breaks, and dynamic content with the actual templates. Browser output can differ from a user’s desktop due to installed fonts, browser version, and missing assets.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Browser fails to launch | Missing native libraries, incompatible binary, or wrong runtime/architecture. | Build for the Lambda Linux target and selected architecture; verify the browser package’s dependencies and launch configuration. |
| Function reports read-only filesystem errors | The browser or application is writing outside the writable temporary directory. | Direct transient browser data and output files to /tmp; keep the rest of the image read-only. |
| Timeouts on pages with remote assets | Slow or unreachable resources, excessive waiting, or insufficient timeout for the real workload. | Check outbound access and resource URLs, use a suitable readiness condition, and tune timeout with representative inputs. |
| PDF is missing images, styles, or fonts | Assets did not load, were blocked, or are unavailable inside Lambda. | Check network access and browser logs; bundle essential assets or make them reliably accessible. |
| Output differs from local development | Different browser version, fonts, architecture, CSS behavior, or page timing. | Pin the browser and automation versions, include needed fonts, and test the deployed runtime rather than relying only on local previews. |
| Deployment package is difficult to fit | Browser binaries and dependencies create a large package footprint. | Evaluate a container image for dependency control. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation discusses Lambda package-size challenges and points to a community Chromium package; verify that package’s current runtime and architecture compatibility before adopting it. |
For the package-size discussion, see Puppeteer troubleshooting. Community package guidance is not an AWS compatibility guarantee.

FAQ
Does AWS provide a ready-made Puppeteer HTML-to-PDF Lambda?
The cited AWS browser example demonstrates screenshot capture, not PDF conversion. Combining its browser-packaging approach with browser PDF output is a reasonable implementation, but it is not an AWS-tested recipe.
Can a Lambda function return a PDF instead of saving it?
Yes, if your invocation and response design can accommodate the generated bytes. Otherwise, write the output to durable storage and return a reference.
Is Puppeteer required?
No. The architecture requires a browser renderer only if you need browser-based HTML rendering; choose an automation library and Chromium package compatible with your Lambda runtime and architecture.
