Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to create and compare visual baselines, then run the tests on LambdaTest when you need cloud browser coverage. For a hosted review workflow, capture the page with Playwright and upload the image to LambdaTest SmartUI. These are distinct workflows: the available documentation does not establish a current one-step integration between Playwright and LambdaTest Screenshot Testing.
How the visual-testing workflow fits together
Visual testing has two separate jobs: rendering a page and deciding whether its appearance changed. Playwright Test can take a screenshot and compare it with a stored reference image. LambdaTest can provide cloud browser execution for Playwright; SmartUI separately documents uploading captured images for visual regression review.
That distinction matters: running a Playwright test in LambdaTest does not, by itself, establish that the screenshot is automatically submitted to SmartUI. Choose the execution environment and comparison workflow deliberately.
Create visual assertions with Playwright Test
Screenshot assertions are part of Playwright Test Runner. In a test, navigate to a stable page state and assert against a screenshot:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
On the first run, Playwright creates the reference image. Later runs capture the page again and compare it with that baseline. The assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing them. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation and screenshot assertion API for supported options.
Make the captured page deterministic
A baseline is useful only if the rendering conditions are comparable. Browser, operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep the environment consistent between baseline creation and comparison, and review baseline changes before committing them.
- Wait for the application’s meaningful ready state rather than taking the screenshot immediately after navigation.
- Use stable test data and avoid capturing transient animations, timestamps, or rotating content unless those changes are what you intend to test.
- When a legitimate design change alters the expected image, inspect the diff and update the snapshot intentionally. Do not accept a new baseline merely to silence a failing test.
Playwright documents controls including maxDiffPixels, stylePath, and snapshot-update options. Use them to manage known variation, not to hide unexpected visual regressions.
Run Playwright tests in LambdaTest’s cloud browsers
LambdaTest’s Playwright runner guide describes configuring credentials through environment variables, defining browser and platform projects, running the Playwright command, and reviewing results in the Automation dashboard. The exact browser and platform identifiers in example configurations can age, so check LambdaTest’s current supported values before using them.

- Set credentials outside source control. Follow the LambdaTest Playwright guide to provide your LambdaTest username and access key through environment variables. Do not commit real secrets in the test configuration.
- Configure the browser project. Select a currently supported browser and platform identifier from LambdaTest’s catalog. Treat the guide’s sample configuration as illustrative, not as a guarantee that a particular version is still available.
- Run the Playwright command. Use the command specified by the guide for its sample setup, or your project’s corresponding Playwright test command once the LambdaTest configuration is in place.
- Inspect the run. Review execution results in LambdaTest’s Automation dashboard and investigate failures in the environment that produced them.
LambdaTest’s guide describes 40+ real browser and operating system combinations, a vendor-stated figure whose publication date is not stated in the surfaced guide. Check the current catalog rather than relying on that count as a present-day availability guarantee.
Use SmartUI for a hosted visual-review workflow
LambdaTest SmartUI is a separate route for visual comparison: its API reference documents uploading locally captured images for visual regression and retrieving build status and screenshots. Its overview describes baseline and comparison images and reviewing visual issues. That supports a workflow in which Playwright captures an image and a later step uploads it to SmartUI; the cited material does not verify a maintained turnkey adapter for every language or test runner.
- Capture the page with Playwright in the browser environment you chose.
- Integrate an upload step using the current SmartUI API reference.
- Use SmartUI’s documented build-status and screenshot retrieval flow to review the visual result.
The cited API reference identifies itself as version 1.0.1 and was crawled roughly four years ago. Its 100 MB maximum upload size is therefore historical, not a confirmed current limit. Verify the current endpoint, limits, and workflow compatibility in LambdaTest’s documentation before implementing against them.
Playwright snapshots, LambdaTest execution, and SmartUI compared
| Approach | What it does | Where it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | Creates a reference image on the first run and compares later captures against it. | Native visual assertions in a Playwright Test project. | Rendering differences make a consistent baseline environment important. |
| LambdaTest cloud Playwright execution | Runs browser tests against configured cloud browser and platform combinations. | Cross-browser execution for Playwright tests. | Supported values should be checked against the current catalog; cloud execution alone does not establish an automatic SmartUI comparison. |
| LambdaTest SmartUI upload workflow | Accepts locally captured screenshots for visual regression and documents build and screenshot status retrieval. | Hosted visual review after a screenshot has been captured. | The cited API reference is old; confirm current endpoints, limits, and integration support. |
| Legacy LambdaTest Screenshot API | Its page describes starting screenshot tests and querying OS, browser, device, resolution, and results. | Do not assume it is the same product or workflow as SmartUI. | The surfaced page is roughly four years old and does not establish a current Playwright integration. |
Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
The screenshot assertion fails after a browser or system change
Likely cause: The baseline and current run were rendered under different operating systems, browser versions, settings, or headless conditions.

Fix: Run both baseline generation and comparison in a consistent environment. If the rendered change is expected, inspect the image difference and update the baseline deliberately.
The image changes from run to run
Likely cause: The page includes unstable content or the capture occurs before it reaches a repeatable state.
Fix: Wait for the relevant page state, use stable test data, and account for transient elements such as animation or time-dependent content. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize, but that does not make changing application content deterministic.
LambdaTest rejects or cannot run the browser configuration
Likely cause: A browser or platform identifier copied from an older example is no longer supported or is not valid for the selected configuration.

Fix: Check LambdaTest’s current browser/platform values and update the project configuration. Keep credentials in environment variables and confirm that the runner receives them.
A SmartUI upload or status check fails
Likely cause: The implementation relies on an outdated endpoint, upload limit, or assumed adapter behavior.
Fix: Verify the current API reference and confirm the upload and build-status sequence for your account and integration. Do not infer current limits from the old version 1.0.1 documentation.

Visual tests add browser rendering and image comparison work to a test run. Cross-browser cloud execution can broaden coverage, but each additional environment also increases the number of results and baselines your team must review. Start with the browser environments that matter to your users, keep test pages deterministic, and add environments as a deliberate coverage choice.

Baseline storage and approval differ by workflow: Playwright’s screenshot assertions use reference images in the test project, while SmartUI’s documented flow uploads images and exposes hosted build and screenshot status. Decide who reviews diffs and how approved visual changes are versioned before scaling the suite. The available material does not establish current SmartUI limits or a universal Playwright adapter, so verify those details before estimating implementation effort.
