Then use the logs and reg-suit’s verbose output to identify whether the delay is in your build, snapshot synchronization, image comparison, report publication, notification, or runner/network access. Increase timeout-minutes only if that work is expected to finish and the job remains within the applicable runner limit; a longer timeout will not fix a process that is stuck.
1. Find the step that actually timed out
Open the failed workflow run on GitHub and inspect the failed job’s steps. Identify the step that was active when GitHub cancelled execution, then read its output and the surrounding job logs. Reg-suit may not be the cause if the workflow timed out during checkout, dependency installation, build, or tests before the reg-suit command started.
GitHub creates activity logs for workflow runs. If they do not explain why a workflow, job, or step failed, GitHub recommends enabling additional debug logging. See GitHub’s workflow troubleshooting guide.
2. Turn on reg-suit’s verbose output
Run reg-suit with its verbose option so the log shows more detail about the operation in progress:

npx reg-suit --verbose runThe CLI also documents -v as a global verbose option. If your workflow uses a non-default configuration file, confirm that the command points to the intended file; reg-suit documents -c for an alternate configuration.
npx reg-suit --verbose -c path/to/regconfig.json runCompare the last active log line with the workflow’s cancellation time. Reg-suit’s run process includes expected-snapshot synchronization, comparison, report publication, and optional notifications. The project’s README describes the tool and its stages at the reg-viz reg-suit repository. A log stopping during one stage is a clue about where to investigate, not proof by itself that the stage is defective.

3. Set a timeout at the right level
GitHub Actions supports timeout-minutes for both jobs and individual steps. A job-level timeout limits the whole job; a step-level timeout can give one long operation a separate limit. The current workflow syntax documentation gives jobs a 360-minute default and sets a maximum of 360 minutes for steps. Job execution may be cut off earlier by the applicable runner execution limit. Check GitHub’s workflow syntax reference for the current rules.
Choose a limit based on the step’s observed runtime and a reasonable buffer, not a universal value. The following configuration illustrates both timeout locations; 30 and 20 minutes are example values, not official recommendations.

The README also describes a detached-HEAD workaround for CI configurations using the git-hash key generator; investigate that only if the logs point to branch or history handling, not as a general timeout fix.
4. Follow the last active operation
Before reg-suit starts
If the timed-out step is checkout, dependency installation, build, or tests, troubleshoot that operation first. Increasing the reg-suit step timeout cannot help when reg-suit never starts.

Snapshot synchronization or report publication
If verbose output points to fetching or publishing snapshots or reports, inspect the publisher configuration, credentials, and storage/network reachability. Reg-suit lists publisher plugins for services including Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage; the correct checks depend on the plugin and storage service configured in your project.
Image comparison
If the log stops during comparison, verify that the expected and actual image inputs are present and that the amount of comparison work is what you intended. The available project documentation does not establish a universal performance setting or benchmark, so avoid applying an arbitrary optimization without evidence from your run.

Notification
If the comparison and publication finish but execution stalls during notification, inspect the notification configuration and the relevant service’s reachability and credentials. Treat this as a notification-stage issue rather than repeatedly raising the whole job timeout.
Runner status and network access
For a self-hosted runner, check its status in the repository or organization’s runner settings. GitHub also documents the runner configuration script’s --check option for testing access to required GitHub network services. When logs show connectivity failures, investigate network routes and firewall rules using GitHub’s self-hosted runner troubleshooting guidance.
5. Re-run and verify the fix
- Make one evidence-based change: fix the implicated build or configuration, address a demonstrated storage or network problem, or adjust the relevant timeout.
- Re-run the workflow and compare the timed step’s duration and last successful operation with the original trace.
- Keep a higher timeout only if the work completes reliably within it and stays inside the applicable runner execution limit. If it still stalls, use the last active operation to continue diagnosing rather than raising the limit repeatedly.
