For example, "waitForTimeout": 3000 waits three seconds. Keep screenshot settings such as fullPage and type inside options; the deliberate pause is separate.
Use waitForTimeout in the current REST Screenshot API
Send a POST request to Browserless’s Screenshot API with the delay alongside url. The value is in milliseconds, so 3000 means 3,000 milliseconds, or three seconds.

Choose a wait that matches what the page needs
Use a fixed delay only when elapsed time itself is the requirement—for example, when an animation or transition needs time to finish. Browserless describes waitForTimeout as useful for animations, transitions, or other time-based operations in its Request Configuration documentation.

When readiness can be observed, a selector, function, or custom-event wait can avoid a needless fixed pause and can be more meaningful than guessing a duration. These alternatives and their configuration are described in Browserless’s Request Configuration documentation.

Allow enough time for the complete request
The request-level timeout query parameter sets the overall request budget, and Browserless timeout values are in milliseconds. That budget needs to cover navigation, any deliberate delay or condition-based wait, and screenshot generation. A request can time out before capture finishes if the combined work exceeds the overall limit.
Distinguish this from options.timeout: screenshot-specific timeout settings are not a substitute for the deliberate pre-capture pause. Plan navigation timeouts, selector timeouts, fixed delays, and the overall timeout according to their separate purposes. Check the API generation before adapting examples
The example above is for Browserless’s current REST Screenshot API. Do not copy its wait field blindly into older or different Browserless interfaces:
- The legacy BaaS v1
/screenshotAPI documents awaitForproperty that can accept a numeric delay, a CSS selector, or a function. See the legacy /screenshot API documentation. - BrowserQL uses a separate query shape: its
waitForTimeoutmutation takes atimeargument in milliseconds, such aswaitForTimeout(time: 1000). See the BrowserQL waitForTimeout documentation.
Troubleshoot a delay that does not behave as expected
- The screenshot happens too soon: Confirm that
waitForTimeoutis a top-level JSON field alongsideurl, not nested underoptions, and that the request targets the current REST Screenshot API. - The pause is much longer or shorter than intended: The value is milliseconds: use
3000for three seconds, not3. - The request times out: The overall request budget may not include enough time for navigation, the wait, and capture. Review the request’s
timeoutand the relevant operation-specific timeout settings. - A selector wait fails: Check that the selector is correct for the page and that the element appears before its selector timeout. If the page has no dependable readiness element, use a fixed delay only if the task is genuinely time-based.
- A custom event wait never completes: Verify that the page emits the event you are waiting for. Browserless’s event wait is for custom page events, not
loadorDOMContentLoaded.
