Then check that the expected baseline was synchronized and selected correctly, and that the baseline and current screenshots were captured under the same conditions. Change comparison tolerances only after those inputs are sound. Without your report, Reg-suit configuration, capture setup, or CI logs, no single cause can be identified.
How Reg-suit decides whether a screenshot changed
Reg-suit compares images in actualDir with expected images fetched during sync-expected, then creates an HTML report. In the standard run workflow, it synchronizes expected images, compares them, and publishes the result. A key-generator plugin determines which expected snapshot key to use; a publisher plugin retrieves the expected images. If the key, baseline, filenames, or directories are wrong, the comparison may not be comparing the image pair you intended. See the Reg-suit project documentation.
Screenshot capture is an upstream input: a changed browser, viewport, or page state can produce changed image pixels even if the application code is unchanged. The official Puppeteer demo shows screenshots supplied to Reg-suit and recognized as new items. Triage the report in this order

Check what the report actually labels
Separate new or missing items from changed image pairs. If images are reported as new, check whether expected counterparts exist and whether current screenshot filenames match the names used for the baseline. Read the categories and image pairings in your own report rather than assuming every entry is a pixel comparison against the right baseline.

Verify synchronization and the expected key
Confirm that
sync-expectedcompleted successfully. Inspect which key the configured key-generator plugin selected, then verify that the publisher retrieved the baseline for the branch, commit, or workflow you intend to compare. A successful comparison against the wrong baseline is still the wrong comparison. -
Match capture conditions
Compare the settings and runtime used to create the expected images with those used for the current run. Check browser and capture-tool versions, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, fonts, loaded assets, locale, timezone, animation state, and capture timing. A difference in one shared setting can affect many pages at once. These are diagnostic checks; the appropriate controls depend on your capture tool.

Inspect a few representative diffs
Open several changed images and look for a common visual signature: a shifted layout, different text rendering, missing assets, or broad color changes. If the diffs share a pattern, investigate shared inputs such as the baseline selection, browser setup, or assets; the pattern alone does not identify the cause. The Reg-suit configuration example uses
thresholdRate: 0.05; that is an example value, not a universal recommendation. Raising tolerance may suppress small rendering differences, but can also hide a real, small regression. Review representative diffs before choosing a setting. The related reg-cli project documentation also documents threshold rate. -
Refresh the baseline only when the change is intentional
If review confirms that the visual changes are expected, publish updated expected screenshots using your team’s normal baseline workflow. Do not refresh every baseline just to make CI pass: that can turn a broken asset load or unintended rendering change into the new expectation.

What patterns across many screenshots can tell you
If many pages change in a similar way, prioritize checks for shared causes: expected-key selection, capture environment, common fonts or assets, and timing. If only particular pages change, inspect their page-specific content and resources. Neither pattern proves a cause; use it to decide what to inspect first, then confirm by comparing the actual and expected files and their capture conditions.
Common troubleshooting errors
