In reg-suit, the reference store holds the earlier screenshot images used as the expected baseline in a visual regression comparison. A publisher plugin retrieves the selected baseline, reg-suit compares it with the images generated by the current run, then the plugin publishes the new snapshots and comparison report to the configured destination.

How the reference-store workflow works

  1. Your project generates current screenshot images in the configured actualDir.
  2. A key-generator plugin selects which earlier snapshot set should serve as the reference. The official plugin list describes the Git-hash key generator as walking the Git branch graph to identify the commit to compare against.
  3. The publisher plugin retrieves that keyed reference set into reg-suit’s working directory.
  4. reg-suit compares the current images with the fetched reference images and creates an HTML report showing differences.
  5. The publisher plugin publishes the current snapshots and comparison result to the configured destination. A notifier plugin can also send results to services such as GitHub or GitLab.

The official reg-suit README describes run as the combined workflow. Its separate commands make the store’s job especially clear: sync-expected fetches the selected references, compare compares those with current images, and publish uploads the current images and comparison result.

What is stored, and what the store does not do

The reference store is not the comparison engine or the screenshot generator. It is the configured destination from which reg-suit can obtain prior snapshot images and to which it can publish current snapshots and the HTML comparison result. The store gives a run access to the expected images; the key generator determines which set is expected, and reg-suit performs the comparison.

The project README says reg-suit compares current images with previous images and creates an HTML report of their differences. The report helps a reviewer inspect visual changes; the store itself does not decide whether a difference is acceptable.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which storage backends can be used?

The backend depends on the publisher plugin configured for the project. The official README names AWS S3 and Google Cloud Storage (GCS) as examples. Its plugin list describes the S3 publisher as retrieving previous snapshots from an S3 bucket and pushing current snapshots and the report; it presents GCS as an alternative.

A separate community-maintained repository documents a GitHub publisher plugin with GitHub Releases and GHCR backends. That is an option documented by that plugin’s maintainers, not evidence that it is included in every reg-suit setup or maintained by the reg-viz project.

Consequently, the phrase “reference store” does not identify one universal service. The project’s publisher plugin and configuration determine the backend, credentials, and any retention behavior. You cannot tell which destination a particular project uses from the reg-suit name alone.

Where to find the project’s store configuration

The official README shows a regconfig.json file with core and plugins sections. In the core section, actualDir is required, while workingDir is optional and defaults to .reg. Publisher-specific settings belong in that plugin’s configuration; the README’s S3 example sets bucketName, which is an example rather than a requirement for every backend. It also documents environment-value placeholders for plugin configuration.

  3. Check the project’s installed plugin documentation or repository for the backend’s authentication and storage behavior.
  4. Use the configured key generator and publisher settings to determine which reference set is retrieved and where results are published.

For implementation details, consult the official README and the reg-suit repository. For the alternative GitHub publisher’s documented behavior, see its maintainer repository.

How ScreenshotNeo relates to reg-suit

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can be an alternative to explore when the task is capturing web pages: it returns screenshots or PDFs through an API, and its MCP server lets AI agents request captures. The documented reg-suit workflow, by contrast, focuses on retrieving and publishing snapshots through a configured publisher plugin as part of visual regression testing.

Can I tell which reference store a project uses from its reg-suit setup?

Yes. Inspect its configured publisher plugin and settings in regconfig.json; the project name alone does not specify the backend.
