It does not create screenshots itself: your browser automation or other image-generation step must run first. That division makes reg-suit a practical fit for teams that already capture screenshots in their build or test pipeline and want to manage comparison, snapshot storage, and review notifications in CI or locally.
What Reg-suit does—and what it does not
The project describes reg-suit as a CLI for visual regression testing. Give it a directory of current images, configure how expected snapshots are identified and stored, and it can compare the images and produce a report. Its workflow can also publish snapshots and notify a team through configured plugins. The project README documents the command and plugin setup.
Screenshot creation is upstream work. In the project’s Puppeteer demonstration, the browser captures an image before the example invokes npx reg-suit run. You therefore need both a screenshot-generation step and reg-suit’s comparison workflow; installing reg-suit alone will not capture your application.
How a Reg-suit run works
The main command, reg-suit run, combines the configured workflow: synchronizing expected images, comparing them with current images, publishing results, and optionally notifying integrations. The README describes the constituent operations as sync-expected, compare, and publish -n. The exact behavior depends on the plugins you configure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Generate current images. Run your browser tests or other capture process and save its output in the directory you plan to configure as
core.actualDir. - Identify the expected snapshot set. A key-generator plugin determines which expected images belong to the run—for example, using Git-derived commit information or an arbitrary string.
- Retrieve expected images. A publisher plugin connects to the configured snapshot store, such as Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage, to obtain the comparison baseline.
- Compare and report. Reg-suit compares current and expected images using your configured thresholds and writes an HTML difference report.
- Publish and notify. The publisher can store actual snapshots and the report; configured notifier plugins can then deliver results.
These are separate responsibilities: your capture tool supplies images, the key generator selects a snapshot key, the publisher handles storage, and notifiers communicate results.
Set up a first run
The documented onboarding uses npm, a project-level initialization, a configuration file, and an image directory. The steps below assume you already have a way to generate screenshots; use the same capture process and naming conventions for every run so that images can be compared consistently.
- Install the CLI. The README documents a global install with
npm install -g reg-suit. Alternatively, use the package as part of your project’s npm workflow and invoke it through that workflow. - Initialize the project. From the project directory, run
reg-suit initand answer the prompts to configure reg-suit and choose plugins. - Prepare the actual-image directory. Configure
core.actualDirto point to the directory your capture step fills. The project’s configuration example usesregconfig.jsonin the repository root. - Provide plugin configuration. Set up the key generator and publisher required for your workflow. Add notifiers if you want results sent to a review or team service. Provide credentials through the environment or the applicable plugin configuration rather than committing secrets.
- Run the comparison workflow. Run
reg-suit runafter generating the images. Inspect the resulting report and confirm the expected snapshots are the ones you intended to compare.
For exact current configuration keys and plugin options, consult the README and configuration example; plugin-specific setup can change the required fields and run sequence.

Configure comparisons deliberately
The example configuration documents core options for the working directory (default .reg), changed-pixel rate or absolute pixel thresholds, color matching threshold, antialias handling, x-img-diff reporting, and comparison concurrency (documented default: 4). The README’s thresholdRate value of 0.05 is an example, not a universal recommendation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Thresholds determine how much image variation is tolerated. A permissive setting can hide small changes you care about; a strict setting can flag rendering differences you do not intend to treat as regressions. Antialias handling also affects comparisons. Tune these settings against your application’s output and rendering environment, then review actual reports before treating a passing run as sufficient evidence.
Reg-suit also documents optional structural difference reporting through x-img-diff-js, which can help show inserted or moved regions. When configured for client invocation, it uses WebAssembly and Web Workers in the browser, so the documentation calls for a modern browser. This reporting option changes how differences are presented; it does not remove the need to decide what image changes your project considers acceptable.

Plugins and CI considerations
The repository lists Git-derived and arbitrary-string key generators; S3 and GCS publisher plugins; and notifier plugins for GitHub, GitLab, GitHub Enterprise, Slack, and Chatwork. These are integrations documented by the project, not a guarantee that each external service or plugin remains supported today. Check the relevant plugin’s instructions and your CI provider’s current behavior before adopting one.
Git-derived keys and detached HEAD
The Git-hash key generator needs the current branch name to identify a base commit. Some CI systems check out a commit in detached-HEAD state, where branch context may be unavailable. The project README warns about this and illustrates fetching branch data or explicitly checking out/attaching the branch before running reg-suit. If snapshot selection fails in CI but works locally, inspect the checkout state and ensure the job has the branch information the key generator expects.

Secrets and cloud storage
Snapshot publishing depends on an external storage service and its plugin configuration. The README example shows environment-variable substitution for a bucket name, a pattern that helps keep environment-specific values out of a checked-in configuration file. You still need to configure the relevant service credentials and permissions. Reg-suit’s documented workflow does not establish storage prices or the total operating cost of a CI setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limitations and evaluation criteria
- It compares supplied files, not live pages. Your pipeline must generate the images before reg-suit runs.
- Comparison behavior requires project decisions. Threshold and antialias settings shape what counts as a difference; the project material does not quantify false-positive or false-negative rates.
- Rendering consistency is not guaranteed by the documented workflow. The sources do not establish cross-platform rendering guarantees or benchmark results.
- Storage and integrations add setup work. You must configure the chosen publisher, credentials, and any desired notifier; external service costs are separate and not established in the project material.
- Comparative performance claims are not available here. The documented sources do not provide an independent comparison against other visual-testing tools.
For a team already running screenshot capture in Node.js CI, reg-suit’s appeal is its plugin-based path from keyed snapshots through comparison and report publication. If you need screenshot generation, managed storage economics, or quantified accuracy guarantees from one product, the documented workflow alone does not establish those capabilities.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is to capture a page rather than build a full visual-regression pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace reg-suit’s snapshot comparison; it can supply screenshots without requiring you to configure browser automation for that capture. Before each capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
