BrowserCat can provide the managed browser session for capturing a website screenshot, while Playwright controls the page and saves the image. You then compare that image with a saved baseline using a separate diff tool or review process. BrowserCat’s reviewed documentation describes screenshot capture and monitoring ideas, but does not establish a built-in pixel-diff or complete visual-regression product.

Does BrowserCat compare screenshots automatically?

Not according to the reviewed BrowserCat documentation. It shows how to capture screenshots with Playwright connected to BrowserCat and discusses scheduled screenshots for monitoring changes. Capture, comparison, and alerting are separate steps: BrowserCat supplies the browser runtime, Playwright drives it, and a separate comparison process identifies and reports differences.

BrowserCat describes a single connection endpoint for Playwright, Puppeteer, and other CDP clients. Its router selects a managed backend based on capability, latency, and availability, and the company advertises automatic failover. The current product page identifies Cloudflare as live and says additional backends are coming; these are vendor statements, not independently verified performance or availability results. See the BrowserCat product page.

How do I compare website screenshots with BrowserCat?

Use the same Playwright script and page conditions to create a baseline image and a later image. Keep capture conditions stable, save both files, and pass them to a separate image-diff utility or reviewer. BrowserCat’s quick start recommends Playwright and demonstrates both a locally launched browser and a BrowserCat cloud connection: BrowserCat quick start.

1. Install Playwright

In a new Node.js project, install the Playwright package and its browser:

npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium

2. Capture a baseline locally

Save the following as capture.mjs. It accepts the target URL and output filename as command-line arguments, uses a fixed viewport, waits for the page to reach a network-idle state, and writes a full-page PNG.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const url = process.argv[2];
const output = process.argv[3] ?? 'baseline.png';

if (!url) {
  throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs https://example.com baseline.png');
}

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage({
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });
  await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
  await page.screenshot({ path: output, fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

3. Use the same capture with BrowserCat

Install the BrowserCat Playwright connector as described in its quick start, then replace the local browser launch with a connection to BrowserCat’s cloud endpoint. Keep navigation, viewport, page state, and screenshot timing unchanged so differences are less likely to come from the test setup.

4. Compare and review separately

Keep the baseline under version control or in your test artifact store. After a deployment or on a schedule, save a new capture and run your chosen image-comparison utility, or inspect the images and any generated overlay side by side. The BrowserCat material reviewed here does not specify a diff algorithm, threshold, masking feature, or built-in alerting behavior, so choose and configure those separately.

How can I make a screenshot comparison reliable?

A diff is useful only when the two captures represent comparable page states. Before interpreting a change as a regression, stabilize the environment and decide which differences matter to your test.

  • Browser: Keep the browser engine and version consistent. BrowserCat’s configuration documentation currently lists Chromium and Chrome as running options, with Firefox and WebKit described as roadmap options; check the browser configuration docs for current availability.
  • Viewport and scale: Use the same viewport dimensions and device scale factor. A changed viewport can alter responsive layout even if the site code has not changed.
  • Page and test data: Capture the same route, authentication state, account, and underlying test data. Login-gated content can be checked in a browser, but a changed user or dataset can produce noise unrelated to a visual defect.
  • Timing: Keep navigation and wait conditions consistent. Pages with JavaScript rendering or delayed content may need a stable selector or an explicit delay rather than relying on one generic wait condition.
  • Dynamic regions: Timestamps, ads, rotating content, personalization, and asynchronous loads can cause false positives. The reviewed BrowserCat docs do not establish a built-in masking or noise-filtering feature; address unstable regions in your own test or comparison process.
  • Human review: Inspect a detected difference in page context before treating it as a regression. A changed pixel is evidence of a visual difference, not by itself evidence that the change is wrong.

Which comparison approach should I use?

The BrowserCat sources establish a capture and managed-browser role, not a preferred visual-diff vendor or algorithm. Choose a separate comparison method based on the kind of changes your test needs to catch.

Approach Useful for Trade-off to consider
Pixel-level image comparison Finding exact rendered pixel changes between controlled captures. Small rendering changes and dynamic content can create noise; the reviewed BrowserCat material does not prescribe a threshold or masking system.
Perceptual comparison Prioritizing differences that may be visually meaningful rather than treating every pixel equally. Behavior depends on the separate tool’s algorithm and configuration; BrowserCat documentation does not specify one.
DOM-assisted or targeted checks Checking selected elements or structure alongside screenshots. Requires a separate test implementation and may not reveal every visual rendering issue.
Text/API or ordinary HTTP check Verifying simple accessible values, such as text or a price. May not capture layout, styles, or content rendered only by JavaScript or behind login. BrowserCat’s browser automation guide notes that simpler values can sometimes be checked without a browser.

When are BrowserCat screenshots useful?

A browser capture is useful when the thing being monitored is the rendered page: for example, homepage layout, documentation pages, or a page whose content appears after JavaScript executes or after login. BrowserCat’s vendor guide describes scheduled screenshots for watching visual breakage or recording page changes, and mentions deployment checks as a use case. For a simple text or price value that an API or ordinary HTTP request exposes, a browser screenshot may be more machinery than the check requires.

BrowserCat configuration and execution notes

BrowserCat documents configuration through a BrowserCat-Opts header or a smaller set of query parameters. The documented options include browser choice, launch arguments, user preferences, and proxy configuration. When both header and query settings are supplied, the documentation says header settings take precedence. It also warns that credentials placed in request parameters should be sent over secure https or wss transport. Consult the configuration documentation for current syntax and supported values.

The docs say sessions currently run near the request and that explicit region routing is on the roadmap. Because geography and browser rendering can affect captures, treat this as a current vendor description and verify the available options when setting up geographically sensitive checks. BrowserCat recommends Playwright for new users and says it has no plans to support Selenium or Cypress; this does not rule out other CDP clients where compatible.

Use scheduled or CI captures only after deciding where baselines live, who reviews changes, and how a failure reaches the team. The reviewed material does not establish BrowserCat-specific cost, parallelism limits, CI integration guarantees, or a complete baseline-approval and alerting system; those depend on your chosen capture plan and comparison tooling.

Troubleshooting screenshot comparison

  • The script cannot connect: Confirm the endpoint, API key, package setup, and current BrowserCat authentication syntax in the official quick start. Keep credentials out of source control and use secure WebSocket transport.
  • The capture times out: Check whether the page is still loading or waiting on persistent network activity. A page-specific wait condition may work better than networkidle; set a deliberate timeout and ensure your capture script fails visibly rather than silently saving an incomplete result.
  • The diff reports many unrelated changes: Compare viewport, device scale, browser, authentication, test data, and capture timing first. Then identify dynamic areas such as ads or timestamps and handle them in the separate comparison setup.
  • The screenshots have different layouts: Verify the requested route and responsive viewport, and ensure the same browser option is being used. BrowserCat currently documents Chromium and Chrome as running browser options; other engines are listed as roadmap options in its configuration docs.
  • A page looks blank or incomplete: Check whether content requires JavaScript, login, or extra time to appear. Browser-based monitoring can cover rendered content, but the capture needs the correct session state and wait condition.

Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions

Can BrowserCat take screenshots for visual regression testing?

Yes. The documented workflow uses Playwright to capture screenshots through BrowserCat’s managed browser connection. You still need a separate comparison and review process to determine whether visual changes are regressions.

Can I monitor a page that requires JavaScript or login?

A browser-based capture can render JavaScript content and can access login-gated pages when the test supplies the appropriate authenticated state. Keep that state consistent between captures.
