Use Browserless’s REST /screenshot endpoint to render a government web page and save its returned image. Choose whether you need only the visible viewport or the full document, wait for important content and images to load, and inspect the result for CAPTCHA, access-denied, blank, or incomplete pages. Keep the exact URL and capture settings with the image: a screenshot is a visual snapshot, not a complete web archive or proof of legal admissibility.
What a screenshot can—and cannot—preserve
A screenshot records how a page appeared in a particular browser rendering at capture time. It does not preserve the page’s underlying HTML, interactions, linked documents, or future availability. For formal records retention, follow the relevant department’s policy rather than treating an image as a substitute for an archive.
The Government of India’s Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and Apps (GIGW) describe government website content management and archival expectations. Its policy template calls for departments to define how long old documents remain online, when they move to offline archives, and whether or when they may be deleted. It does not prescribe one universal retention period. Check the applicable department policy for the page or record you need.
GIGW identifies gov.in and nic.in domains as indicators of official status and says ownership information is among the minimum content expected on subsequent pages. These are useful checks when identifying a page’s owner, not proof that a screenshot is authentic. See the GIGW guidelines and its archival policy template.

Prepare the page and capture record
- Confirm the page. Copy and retain the exact URL. Note the owning organization and check the page context, including any displayed ownership information.
- Choose the capture extent. A viewport screenshot shows the rendered screen at the chosen viewport dimensions. A full-page screenshot captures the document’s full height; long pages can produce very tall images.
- Allow the relevant content to load. Dynamic pages may need a wait for a selector, images, or other content. Lazy-loaded sections may not appear until the page is scrolled; inspect the output rather than assuming the entire page loaded.
- Keep a sidecar record. Alongside the image, record the exact URL, capture time in UTC, viewport dimensions, whether full-page capture was enabled, output format, and any visible error or missing content. This is practical traceability advice, not a formal evidence standard.
- Inspect the image. Check that it shows the intended page and content. A blank or white page, CAPTCHA, access-denied/403 response, or missing elements may indicate blocking or an incomplete capture.
Capture a screenshot with Browserless REST
Browserless documents a REST /screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL and screenshot options in a POST request and returns an image response. An API token is required. The documented image formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP, depending on the API options. Refer to the Browserless screenshot API documentation for the current request shape and supported options.
At a high level, send a JSON request body containing the target URL and Puppeteer-style screenshot options, then write the response bytes to a file. For example, the body’s essential shape is:

Save the binary image response, not a text rendering of it. Use the exact endpoint URL and token format shown in the current Browserless documentation; do not expose the token in shared scripts, logs, or screenshots.
Viewport or full-page: choose deliberately

Browserless’s FAQ confirms that setting fullPage to true requests the entire page rather than just the visible viewport. The viewport width can change a responsive page’s layout, so record the dimensions used. If the API’s default viewport is not suitable for the record you need, set dimensions explicitly using the options supported by the endpoint.

Wait for dynamic and lazy-loaded content
Capturing immediately can produce a partial page when scripts, images, or other content are still loading. Browserless recommends waiting for relevant elements. Its Browserless Asynchronous Processing (BAP) documentation also exposes a waitForImages option for image-heavy pages. For lazy-loaded content, the REST documentation notes that scrolling may be necessary before capture.
- Wait for a meaningful page element when the text or structure matters.
- Wait for images when image content is part of the record.
- For long pages that load content during scrolling, ensure those sections have been brought into view before treating a full-page image as complete.
- Inspect the final file for missing sections, loading placeholders, or an unexpected interstitial.
Available wait controls vary by Browserless API and request mode. Check the current REST screenshot documentation and BAP screenshot documentation for the options supported by the endpoint you use.

Save and label the returned image
Write the binary response to a file with an extension that matches the requested format, such as .png, .jpg, or .webp. Browserless’s BAP example demonstrates writing screenshot bytes to a local path; its exact code and options may differ from the REST workflow.

Browserless capture does not replace a department archive
GIGW says outdated announcements, tenders, recruitment notices, news, and press releases should be removed or archived under an archival policy, with expiry dates for time-sensitive content and a mechanism to remove or archive it. Its policy template calls for a documented authorization process and an audit trail showing who approved content and when; that governance requirement is not a screenshot authentication rule. Consult the GIGW guidelines and the responsible department’s policy for retention and retrieval requirements. The GIGW page identifies the National Informatics Centre and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology as developer/host and displays “Last Updated: Sep 25, 2026”; that page date does not establish that every underlying guideline changed then.
The reviewed guidance does not establish that a screenshot alone satisfies a department’s retention policy or proves legal admissibility in India. If the intended use requires formal evidentiary or records assurances, seek qualified legal or records-management advice.
