If YouTube Live says your encoder is disconnected, treat it as a symptom—not a diagnosis. First record the exact stream-health error and timestamp, then check the stream URL and RTMPS settings, VPS status and firewall path, and encoder output settings in that order. The error alone cannot identify which part failed.
1. Capture the error before restarting
Open YouTube Live Control Room and note the exact message beside the stream-health indicator and its timestamp. YouTube timestamps stream errors; critical errors can stop an event from starting or cause viewer problems, while moderate errors can reduce quality. Record whether the preview ever received data and whether the encoder process was still running when the error appeared.
Also save the encoder log around the same time. Comparing the YouTube timestamp with the encoder log helps distinguish a feed that stopped at the source from an ingestion or configuration error. The words “encoder disconnected” by themselves do not establish a root cause.
2. Verify the YouTube destination and RTMPS settings
- Copy the current stream URL and key. Get both from the YouTube Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder. Do not rely on an old saved address. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it private and redact it from screenshots, logs, and support messages.
- Check the protocol and encoder support. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm the URL begins with
rtmpsand that the encoder supports RTMPS. For a connection timeout, YouTube specifically advises checking the URL and RTMPS support. - Respond to SSL errors narrowly. If the encoder reports an SSL error, confirm the URL uses RTMPS and points to the correct server address. If the address looks right and the error remains, YouTube says to try port 443 in the URL or encoder port setting.
Use YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance for the URL and port checks. Avoid changing firewall rules until the destination and protocol are verified.

3. Check the Contabo VPS and network path
Confirm the VPS is reachable
Check the VPS running status in Contabo’s Customer Panel and look for incidents on Contabo’s status page. If normal access fails, try VNC. Contabo notes that when VNC works but ordinary access methods do not, firewall configuration, incorrect ports, or network misconfiguration may be involved. If possible, compare access from another device or network to help determine whether the problem is local.
Check the correct firewall and direction
A VPS encoder sends data out to YouTube. Contabo’s network firewall and the firewall inside the VPS operating system are separate controls. Contabo’s network firewall, when assigned to a VPS/VDS, blocks inbound traffic by default and does not restrict outbound traffic; an OS-level firewall can control both inbound and outbound traffic. Check outbound rules in the OS firewall and confirm they allow the destination connection and port selected in the encoder.

Opening inbound RTMP port 1935 is not a general fix for an encoder connecting outward to YouTube. Base firewall changes on the actual protocol and destination port in the Live Control Room and encoder configuration. See Contabo’s network firewall guidance for the distinction between network-level controls and the VPS firewall.
Measure before blaming capacity
Contabo publishes VPS/VDS port-speed options ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, but that range does not establish the sustained throughput of an individual VPS or its route to YouTube. If the server is online and the destination is correct but the stream still drops, record measured egress performance, packet loss, and connection timing before attributing the issue to capacity. Contabo’s network-speed guidance describes the published port-speed range.

4. Match encoder output to YouTube’s guidance
After confirming the connection path, check the settings for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS has the necessary spare outbound capacity. Check the row matching your actual output in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

If YouTube reports “incorrect stream format,” its error guidance says the encoder is using something other than H.264 video and AAC audio for that configuration, or has incorrect video settings. Follow the specific displayed message rather than changing several unrelated settings at once. YouTube also recommends testing before the event with similar audio and motion, then monitoring stream health while live.

- SSL error: Verify RTMPS and the server address; if they are correct but the SSL error persists, try port 443.
- Connection timeout: Verify the current URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS.
- VPS unavailable: Check Contabo status and running state. If VNC works but other access does not, inspect firewall configuration, port settings, and network configuration.
- VPS is reachable but YouTube receives no feed: Check the current stream URL and key, RTMPS support, outbound OS firewall rules, and the encoder’s connection log.
- Feed connects but YouTube reports a format error or poor health: Match codec, audio format, CBR bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s guidance for that output.
- Intermittent drops with no clear configuration error: Compare timestamps against encoder logs and record egress performance and packet loss. The available provider guidance does not identify a universal cause or establish that a published port-speed figure is the cause.
Make one targeted change, test again, and note whether the YouTube message, timestamp pattern, or encoder log changes. This preserves a usable trail instead of obscuring the original failure.

6. What to send support if it still disconnects
Collect the exact YouTube health message and timestamp, encoder logs covering the event, operating-system and encoder versions, the stream URL’s protocol and port (never the key), relevant firewall rules, and evidence of VPS status. Contact Contabo when provider-side checks suggest VPS or network availability; consult the encoder’s documentation when RTMPS support or local logs point to the software. Do not publish the stream key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video, supports any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
