OBS Studio is the best-documented Linux starting point for sending a prerecorded video to YouTube Live: add the file as an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. That automates playback, not the whole broadcast. You still need to configure YouTube’s stream connection, start and monitor the encoder, and decide what should happen if the connection fails.

What “automating” a prerecorded live stream covers

A reliable workflow has several separate jobs. OBS can repeat a local media file, while YouTube Studio provides the live event and ingest details. Neither a loop setting nor a scheduled event alone guarantees that a broadcast will start unattended, recover from a failure, or run continuously.

  • Looping: repeat a file in the local player.
  • Scheduling: create a YouTube event and its upcoming watch page.
  • Going live: connect an encoder to YouTube and start the event as configured.
  • Unattended operation: keep the encoder running, monitor it, and handle interruptions. The documented OBS and YouTube steps below do not establish automatic failure recovery.

Best documented Linux option: OBS Studio

OBS is available for Linux, and its Media Source adds media files to a scene. OBS documents support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, with a Loop property for repeating playback. See the OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS Linux installation guidance.

This makes OBS a practical choice when you want a visible desktop setup with scenes and local media control. It is not evidence that an OBS session will stay up indefinitely or automatically restart after every interruption. The official material cited here also does not establish OBS as the only Linux option; it is the clearest documented starting point for this workflow.

Set up a prerecorded stream with OBS and YouTube

  1. Enable live streaming and create an event. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel, then create or schedule a stream. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Scheduling creates an upcoming watch page and can give viewers a reminder, but does not send the encoder feed by itself. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Install OBS using an appropriate Linux package route. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and documents an Ubuntu PPA/package route. Packages from other distribution repositories may be community-maintained; use the official Linux installation page to choose the route for your system.
  3. Add and loop the video. In OBS, create or select a scene, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop if it should repeat. Check that the video and audio play correctly in the OBS preview before connecting to YouTube. OBS describes the source as one that adds media files to scenes in its Media Sources guide.
  4. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream. In OBS streaming settings, choose the available YouTube service preset if it is offered, or enter the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or expose it in public scripts or logs. See YouTube’s encoder guide and stream settings help.
  5. Use compatible output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings should match the current guidance for the selected YouTube stream; check YouTube’s encoder settings rather than relying on an old preset or a value copied from another setup.
  6. Start early, preview, and monitor. Start the encoder with enough time to inspect the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Start the YouTube event as required by its auto-start configuration, then check the public watch page, picture, and sound. YouTube advises: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  7. End the event deliberately. When the broadcast is over, end the YouTube event according to its settings and stop the OBS encoder. Test the start and stop behavior on your own event before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Limits to plan for before leaving a stream unattended

Looping does not automate the encoder lifecycle

OBS’s Loop option repeats the chosen media source. It does not, by itself, schedule an event, start OBS at a future time, verify a public stream, or demonstrate recovery after network or encoder failure. If you need those behaviors, test them independently rather than assuming the media loop covers them.

Know YouTube’s archive threshold

YouTube’s current encoder help documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat 12 hours as a platform threshold for a single event, not a guarantee that a longer broadcast will be archived. Check the current YouTube encoder documentation when planning duration.

Copyright and channel rules still apply

Using prerecorded footage does not exempt a live stream from YouTube’s copyright and channel policies. Only stream material you have the rights or permissions to use, including its music and other embedded content. Review YouTube’s current live streaming guidance and applicable channel rules before scheduling a public broadcast.

Gyre, a cloud-based service Readers looking for a hosted 24/7 prerecorded-streaming category YouTube’s encoder page lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. That listing does not establish Linux desktop support, comparative performance, pricing, or a partner program.

For a machine that must remain online, a Linux VPS or dedicated host is another possible deployment category, but it is not required for the local OBS workflow: suitable home hardware may suffice. The sources cited here do not verify a particular provider, configuration, or reliability outcome. YouTube’s encoder documentation also lists tools that are not thereby certified as Linux-compatible.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: confirm that the correct event’s stream URL and key are in OBS, the encoder is actually streaming, and the key has not been changed. Re-enter credentials through YouTube Studio without exposing the key.
  • The event is scheduled but not live: scheduling creates the event and watch page; it does not start the encoder feed. Start the encoder and follow the event’s configured start or auto-start behavior.
  • The video stops at the end of the file: check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, then test playback in OBS before going live.
  • Viewers hear no audio or see a bad picture: inspect the OBS preview and audio meters, then compare the encoder’s codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration with YouTube’s current encoder settings.
  • The stream drops during a long run: a media loop is not a recovery mechanism. Check the network and encoder, and test reconnection behavior; do not assume OBS or YouTube will resume unattended in every failure case.
