Wait for evidence that the table’s data is ready—not merely for the page to finish loading. In Playwright, wait for an expected row or cell to appear, then read the rendered rows or screenshot the table locator. In Selenium, use an explicit wait tied to the content you need. This distinction matters because JavaScript can populate a table after navigation completes.
Why page load is not the same as table readiness
A browser can finish navigating before JavaScript has fetched and rendered a table’s rows. Selenium notes that scripts may still change a page after its document reaches the selected ready state, so navigation completion alone does not prove that the table is populated (Selenium waiting documentation).
Wait for a condition that represents the result you need: an expected row or cell becoming visible, a known value appearing, a loading indicator disappearing, or a result count reaching the expected value. Prefer a positive content condition when the page exposes one; it states directly what must be true before capture.
Capture a populated table with Playwright
1. Choose a stable table locator
Use an accessible locator or an application-owned selector where possible. Avoid positional selectors that depend on the table’s order on the page. The example below assumes a table with the ID results and a row containing the text Expected value; change both to match the target page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Wait for expected content, then read or capture
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('capture the populated results table', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/results');
const table = page.locator('table#results');
const expectedRow = table.locator('tbody tr', { hasText: 'Expected value' });
// Playwright Test's assertion retries until it passes or times out.
await expect(expectedRow).toBeVisible();
const rows = await table.locator('tbody tr').evaluateAll((elements) =>
elements.map((row) =>
Array.from(row.querySelectorAll('th, td'), (cell) =>
cell.textContent?.trim() ?? ''
)
)
);
console.log(rows);
// Optional: save an image of the rendered table.
await table.screenshot({ path: 'results-table.png' });
});
This is an illustrative pattern; selectors and expected values must match the site. Playwright’s web-first assertions retry until their condition passes or times out. If you are not using Playwright Test, use a supported locator wait for an equivalent content condition. Playwright’s locator and page APIs document these waiting and DOM-interaction approaches (Playwright Page API).
The assertion proves that the expected row is visible, not necessarily that every possible result has loaded. If the page exposes a total count, verify that too when completeness matters. Locator screenshots wait for actionability and scroll the target into view; they capture the rendered table, not records that the page has not rendered.
When to use a screenshot instead of extraction
Use evaluateAll when you need structured cell text for processing. Use table.screenshot() when you need a visual record. A screenshot preserves appearance, while extraction gives you strings to validate or transform; neither automatically includes rows hidden on other pages or absent from the DOM.

Handle pagination, virtualization, and scrolling
A table may render only the current page or viewport. With pagination, move through each page and repeat the readiness check before reading or capturing it. With infinite scrolling or lazy row loading, scroll as the application requires, then wait for the next expected row or a changed result count. Virtualized tables often keep only visible rows in the DOM, so a DOM read or screenshot of the current viewport should not be called the complete dataset unless all segments have been rendered and verified.

Use Selenium when it fits your project
Selenium can wait for a specific element or content condition with WebDriverWait and an expected condition, then read the table. For example, adapt the locator and expected text to the page:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 20)
wait.until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located(
(By.XPATH, "//table[@id='results']//tr[.//*[contains(., 'Expected value')]]")
)
)
rows = driver.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "table#results tbody tr")
data = [
[cell.text.strip() for cell in row.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "th, td")]
for row in rows
]
print(data)
The 20-second timeout is an example, not a recommended universal load duration; choose a finite limit suitable for the application. Selenium’s explicit waits poll for the selected condition. Do not combine implicit and explicit waits: Selenium warns that doing so can produce unpredictable wait durations (Selenium waiting documentation).

Why not wait for network idle?
Network quiet does not necessarily mean the application has finished updating the table. Playwright defines networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 ms and discourages using it as a testing readiness signal. That interval is an API definition, not a general table-loading time. A targeted row, cell, count, or loading-state condition is more closely tied to the result you intend to capture (Playwright Page API).
Choose the approach that matches the job
- Use Playwright if it is already part of your project or you want locator-based waits and straightforward table screenshots or extraction.
- Use Selenium if your project already uses it or its browser setup and language fit your environment.
- For structured data, wait for the content condition and read cell text.
- For a visual record, wait for the content condition and screenshot the table locator.
- For complete results, account for pagination, virtualization, and scroll-loaded segments rather than assuming the current DOM contains every row.
Neither framework is universally better for this task. The useful choice depends on your existing browser setup, the selectors and completion signals the page exposes, and how the table handles its rows.

If you need a screenshot rather than structured row data, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. Its capture options include waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle; for an asynchronously populated table, use a selector that signals the desired content where appropriate. Troubleshooting
The wait times out although the table appears later
Check that the locator matches the actual table and that the expected text is present in the rendered DOM. If the page displays a different value, wait for a stable row or cell that genuinely signals readiness. Increase the finite timeout only if the application’s normal response time warrants it; do not replace the content check with an arbitrary long sleep.
The wait passes, but some rows are missing
Your condition may prove only that one row appeared. If the page provides a result count or completion indicator, wait for it as well. For paginated, virtualized, or scroll-loaded tables, process each segment and verify it before capture.
The screenshot omits the table or captures the wrong area
Confirm the locator identifies the table you intend, that it is visible, and that the readiness condition is scoped to it. A locator screenshot targets the rendered element; it does not collect rows that have not been rendered.

A network-idle wait never completes or completes too soon
Pages with continuing network activity may not become idle, while a brief quiet period may occur before table rendering finishes. Use a table-specific content condition instead of treating network quiet as proof of data readiness.
Selenium waits take unexpectedly long
Check whether the driver has an implicit wait configured alongside WebDriverWait. Remove the combination and rely on the explicit condition for the table state, as Selenium warns that mixed waits can behave unpredictably.
