Run an encoder on the Contabo VPS to combine a still image with your audio playlist, then send the resulting audio/video stream to YouTube. YouTube receives the encoded stream—not a separate image file and playlist. Use the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, test the image, sound, playlist behavior, and stream health, and only then leave the encoder running unattended.
How the image-and-playlist stream works
The VPS hosts the media files and runs an encoder. The encoder uses the still image as its video input, reads audio tracks in the intended order, combines them into one audio/video output, and sends that output to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key.
This guide covers the YouTube-side workflow and the checks needed to configure it safely. It does not prescribe a ready-to-run command or a specific Contabo plan: those depend on the operating system, encoder and build, media formats, account setup, and instance capacity.
Prepare YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- If this is the first time the channel is going live, enable live streaming as prompted. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder configuration on the VPS. Use the values from the selected event rather than assuming a URL or key.
- Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it in screenshots, public configuration examples, or logs shared for troubleshooting. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream.

Prepare the VPS media inputs
Make the still image readable
- Place the image at a stable path the encoder process can access, and confirm its file permissions allow that process to read it.
- Check that the file opens correctly and has suitable dimensions and aspect ratio for the output you plan to send. A mismatched image can be scaled or padded depending on encoder configuration; verify the actual result rather than assuming how it will be handled.
- For an ordinary static image stream, SDR using Rec. 709 is the simpler choice. Use HDR only when there is a genuine HDR source and a reason to preserve it.
Make the playlist accessible and predictable
- Ensure every audio file is present at its expected path, readable by the encoder, and decodable by the chosen software.
- Decide the track order and how the playlist should advance or repeat. The playlist mechanism and its syntax are encoder-specific; YouTube does not prescribe them.
- Test the transition between tracks and the repeat point. A list that plays once may stop the audio when it reaches the end, even if the video input is still present.
- Use music and artwork you have the right to broadcast. A technically healthy stream does not establish that the material complies with YouTube’s copyright rules or monetization policies.
Choose an ingestion protocol and output settings
RTMPS is the usual starting point
For an RTMP-family encoder, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through Google’s servers. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
Use a bitrate suited to the chosen resolution and frame rate
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not a guarantee of the upload speed available on a Contabo instance. Its guidance recommends choosing a quality appropriate to the connection and testing upload speed.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube Help’s undated technical table. The VPS needs sustained upload capacity for the selected output, with operating headroom; no Contabo plan’s rate is established here. A still image does not remove the need to encode and upload a video stream.
Set audio and picture parameters
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Use progressive scan and square pixels among the advanced output recommendations.
- Keep the frame rate and resolution consistent with the selected YouTube-recommended bitrate and what the VPS can sustain.
- For a straightforward still-image broadcast, configure the encoder to include both the image video input and the playlist audio in its outgoing muxed stream.
Use HLS only if the encoder supports its requirements
HLS is not just another name for RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS setup guide requires 1–4-second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. Choose it only when the encoder supports those constraints and that latency trade-off is acceptable.

Test before leaving the broadcast unattended
- Start the encoder using the event’s server URL and stream key, then check that YouTube Live Control Room detects incoming video and audio.
- Confirm that the still image is visible and framed as intended, the audio is audible at a sensible level, and there is no unexpected silence or clipping.
- Listen through enough of the playlist to verify ordering, track transitions, and repeat behavior. Confirm whether the playlist ending stops the encoder or leaves it producing video without audio.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and encoder logs for ingestion warnings, dropped frames, or interruptions. Check VPS CPU and network use during a representative test, not only at startup.
- Make the test resemble the intended stream. YouTube Help says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” For this static-image use case, verify the actual still image and playlist audio rather than relying on a generic encoder test.
YouTube recommends preflight testing and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its settings guidance also recommends matching quality to the connection and testing upload speed.
Check capacity and unattended operation
No specific Contabo VPS size, CPU model, bandwidth guarantee, or minimum RAM/CPU requirement is established for this workload. Resource demand varies with encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, available acceleration, and other processes. Test on the instance you select and check Contabo’s current specifications before choosing a plan.

Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but that is useful only if the VPS exposes compatible hardware and the encoder can use it. OBS Project’s hardware encoding guide notes that older-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with its default veryfast preset. This does not establish that a given Contabo VPS includes an appropriate GPU, or that OBS is the right encoder for this workflow.
For unattended use, decide how the encoder process will be monitored and restarted, and validate the service or process-management steps for your operating system and implementation. Do not rely on a generic command or restart recipe without checking it against the encoder build and configuration. YouTube says stopping encoder output ends the stream; it also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive statement should not be assumed to apply to streams lasting 12 hours or longer. See the encoder guide for the current details.

Troubleshoot common failures
Black screen or missing image
- Check the configured image path, file existence, permissions, and whether the encoder can decode the image format.
- Verify the encoder is actually using the image as its video input and that the output dimensions and framing are valid.
No audio or playlist stops unexpectedly
- Confirm the playlist paths and file permissions, decoder support for each file, and the selected audio stream.
- Check that audio is included in the outgoing muxed stream, not merely available as a local input.
- Review playlist advancement and repeat settings; test the end of the list to identify whether it stops, loops, or leaves silent video.
Dropped frames or unstable ingestion
- Review encoder logs and VPS CPU and network utilization while the problem occurs.
- Compare the selected video bitrate with sustained available upload capacity and reduce output quality if the connection cannot reliably sustain it.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health messages and confirm the server URL and stream key correspond to the intended event.
HLS stream rejected
Check the HLS-specific requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist of at most five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. These requirements are in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Stream stops or archive expectations are wrong
Distinguish encoder termination from YouTube archiving: stopping encoder output ends the stream. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours, not as a blanket promise for longer broadcasts.
Or let it run in the cloud

Frequently Asked Questions
Can YouTube receive the image and playlist as separate inputs?
No. In this workflow the VPS encoder combines them and sends YouTube one encoded audio/video stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use a playlist of copyrighted songs if the stream is unlisted?
Visibility does not establish permission to broadcast the tracks. Use audio and artwork you are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules.
