Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Set the browser’s responsive viewport to 768 CSS pixels wide, inspect the layout at a chosen height, and capture the viewport or the full page. Chrome DevTools is the quickest manual method; Playwright makes the same check repeatable. A 768-pixel preset is a useful test width, not proof that a page will behave identically on every tablet.
What “768-pixel width” means
Responsive layouts respond to the browser viewport’s width in CSS pixels, not necessarily the physical pixel width of a device screen. In Chrome DevTools, you can enter 768 directly or select the Tablet preset labelled 768. Entering the value directly is useful when you want to test that exact width rather than rely on a device label. The page’s own media queries determine which layout rules apply at 768 pixels and nearby widths.
Width alone does not define a complete screenshot: viewport height also affects what appears above the fold. Choose a height appropriate to the content you are checking, and record it when screenshots need to be compared. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.
Capture a 768-pixel screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page and DevTools. In Chrome, open the site you want to test, then open DevTools and turn on Device Mode. Device Mode opens in responsive mode by default. See Chrome’s instructions.
- Set the width. In the responsive width control, enter
768. Set a height that lets you inspect the relevant content; the title specifies width, not height. - Inspect the layout. Check text wrapping, navigation, images, spacing, and controls. To see where the site’s breakpoints fall, open More options > Show media queries, then inspect the breakpoint bars and active rules. Breakpoints vary by site design; do not assume 768 is the only width worth testing.
- Capture the screenshot. Open More options > Capture screenshot for the visible viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot when you need the page’s full scrollable content.
- Keep the setup reproducible. Record the URL, viewport width and height, browser, and whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page. For comparisons, use the same settings each time.
Chrome’s preset widths include 320, 375, 425, 768, 1024, 1440, and 2560 pixels. These are convenient controls, not a requirement to test only those widths. A useful responsive check also looks just below and above relevant breakpoints, where a layout may change.

Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
For a recurring visual check, Playwright lets you set a viewport and save a screenshot in a script. Install Playwright for your project using its official getting-started guide. The following Node.js example opens a page at 768 by 1024 CSS pixels and saves a full-page PNG:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 768, height: 1024 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'tablet-768.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace https://example.com with the page under test. Use fullPage: false or omit the option to capture the viewport rather than the full page. Playwright’s screenshot options support scale: 'css' for output scaled to CSS pixels and scale: 'device' for output reflecting the device scale factor. A larger device scale factor can produce more image pixels without changing the CSS viewport width. For details, see Playwright emulation and Playwright screenshots.

Choose the right kind of validation
- Chrome DevTools: Best for quick manual layout inspection, entering an exact width, viewing media-query boundaries, and capturing viewport or full-page images.
- Playwright: Best when screenshots need to be captured repeatedly or used in a regression workflow. Keep viewport dimensions and screenshot scale consistent across runs.
- Safari or a real device: Use Safari Responsive Design Mode for Safari-specific review, and test on an actual device when behavior depends on browser chrome, the on-screen keyboard, or device-specific form controls. Emulation does not reproduce every such behavior.
Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation describes previews at different widths, heights, and pixel ratios. For breakpoint-oriented review in Chrome, see web.dev’s responsive web design guidance.

Troubleshoot common screenshot issues
- The page does not look like a tablet layout: Confirm the responsive width control reads 768 CSS pixels. Check the site’s media-query bars; its breakpoint may be above or below that width.
- The screenshot cuts off content: Use Capture a full size screenshot in DevTools or
fullPage: truein Playwright. A viewport capture includes only the visible area. - Two screenshots have different apparent sharpness or dimensions: Check the capture scale and device scale factor. CSS-scale output and device-scale output can have different pixel dimensions even at the same CSS viewport.
- A form, menu, or page behavior differs on a tablet: Viewport emulation is a layout check, not a guarantee of actual-device behavior. Verify on the relevant browser and device when the keyboard, browser interface, or native controls matter.
- An automated screenshot is inconsistent: Keep width, height, scale, browser, and capture type constant. If content loads asynchronously, ensure the page has reached the state you intend to compare before capturing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 768 pixels a standard tablet width?
It is a Chrome DevTools Tablet preset, but tablets and browser configurations differ. Treat it as a specific viewport test rather than a universal tablet specification.
Should I capture the viewport or the whole page?
Capture the viewport to inspect what is initially visible; use a full-page capture to review content below the fold.
