Choose OBS Studio if you want Linux support, an open-source app, and a flexible extension-based workflow. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want integrated creator tools—such as overlays, alerts, and widgets—alongside a guided setup. Neither is universally better, and official sources do not establish a controlled performance winner.
The key distinction is packaging: Streamlabs says its Desktop app is built on the OBS engine, but the two products have different interfaces and bundled tools.
What is the difference between Streamlabs Desktop and OBS?
OBS Studio is a free, open-source application organized around scenes, sources, audio, and extensions. Its official product information lists features including plugins, scripts, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and configurable docks. Streamlabs Desktop uses the OBS engine as a foundation and adds an integrated Streamlabs workflow, including built-in overlays, alerts, widgets, and access to other Streamlabs creator tools.
That shared engine does not make the applications identical. OBS gives you a modular base to configure; Streamlabs Desktop puts more creator-facing tools into its own interface. The practical choice is between flexibility and an integrated toolset, not between a universally capable app and an incapable one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Which app should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio for Linux or an extension-heavy setup
- You use Linux: OBS lists Linux support, while Streamlabs’ current FAQ download details list Windows and macOS.
- You want a free, open-source application without an optional premium tier for the core app.
- You want to assemble your workflow from plugins, scripts, hotkeys, and configurable docks.
- You are comfortable configuring scenes and sources rather than relying on a bundled creator-tool workflow.
Try Streamlabs Desktop if built-in tools matter more
- You want overlays, alerts, and widgets integrated into the application’s workflow.
- You value an onboarding flow that brings Streamlabs creator tools together.
- You are interested in premium overlays or other Ultra benefits: first check whether those specific benefits justify the current subscription price.
“Easier” depends on what you are setting up. Bundled features can reduce the need to find and configure separate additions, while OBS’s modularity can suit someone who prefers control over each component. The official sources describe product features, but do not establish that one interface is faster or easier for every user.
Will one use less CPU or perform better?
There is no reliable universal winner to name from the available official information. OBS says its resource needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; Streamlabs publishes minimum and recommended system guidance. Those are vendor guidance, not the results of a controlled comparison between the applications.

OBS also cautions in its system requirements material: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Basic compatibility is not a performance guarantee. Your encoder choice, capture sources, filters, browser overlays, output settings, and the rest of the computer’s workload all affect the result.
Streamlabs’ published hardware guidance
Streamlabs’ requirements article recommends 8 GB RAM as a minimum and identifies 16 GB or more and a 512 GB SSD or larger among its recommended configuration details. Its recommended processor guidance includes an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, along with specified GPU families and Ethernet. These are Streamlabs recommendations, not a promise that a particular setup will handle every scene smoothly.

If you are deciding between the apps for performance, use the same scene, output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and overlays when you compare them on your own machine. Watch CPU and GPU load during the stream, and test the actual workload you intend to run; a simple webcam scene is not a useful stand-in for a complex scene with animated browser sources.
Check operating-system support before installing
- OBS Studio: the current official download information lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, and Linux. OBS’s requirements material warns that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability.
- Streamlabs Desktop: the current FAQ download details list Windows 10+ and macOS 12+. Streamlabs’ requirements article has inconsistent macOS wording, so use the live download information to confirm support for your specific device and version.
Operating-system support can change. Confirm the current download page before installing, particularly if you are on an older macOS release.

Cost: free app versus optional premium tools
OBS is described by OBS Project as free and open source. Streamlabs Desktop has a free tier; Streamlabs Ultra is optional. Streamlabs’ FAQ listed Ultra at $27/month or $189/year billed annually when checked in 2026, and describes benefits that include multistreaming and premium overlays. Those prices and inclusions can change, so verify them on Streamlabs’ current FAQ or checkout before paying. You do not need to treat the Ultra subscription as the price of Streamlabs Desktop itself.
A different option for prerecorded, always-on YouTube streams
Streamlabs Desktop and OBS are desktop streaming applications. If your specific goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it runs the loop in the cloud rather than from a computer running desktop streaming software. It is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
