To make a CSS background image look transparent, place a translucent gradient above it. If you want the image itself faded while text and controls stay crisp, put the image on a separate pseudo-element and set opacity there—not on the content container.
Use a translucent overlay for a quick fade or tint
CSS paints the first background layer on top. Add a translucent gradient before the image URL to put a color wash over the image:

}The white overlay in this example is 45% opaque. Raise that alpha value for a stronger, less visible image; lower it to reveal more of the image. Change the RGB color to use a different tint. Alpha values range from 0 (fully transparent) to 1 (fully opaque). See MDN’s documentation on the background property and alpha values.
Fade only the image and keep content opaque
If the image should be less opaque but text and controls should remain fully visible, place the image on its own layer. A pseudo-element is one option:

}The pseudo-element fills the hero and carries the opacity, leaving the hero’s other contents unaffected. Adjust background-position, background-size, and the opacity value to suit the layout. Check how this layer interacts with any existing positioned elements or stacking contexts; layering behavior can depend on the component around it.
Why not set opacity on the container?
opacity applies to an element and its contents as a whole. Setting opacity: 0.45 on .hero would fade its text and controls along with its background. For a translucent background color, use an alpha-enabled color; for an image that needs independent fading, put it on a separate layer. Check these common issues
- The text looks faded too: Opacity is probably set on the container. Move it to the image pseudo-element or use a translucent gradient overlay.
- The image is too washed out: Lower the overlay alpha. A smaller alpha means more of the original image shows through.
- The image is not behind the content: Review the element’s positioning and stacking context. The pseudo-element example uses
position: relative,isolation: isolate, and a negative z-index; existing layers may affect the result. - Invisible controls still respond to clicks or keyboard focus: Transparency is visual, not a way to disable an element. An element with
opacity: 0can still receive pointer events, and focusable descendants can remain in the tab order. Hide or disable interactive content using behavior appropriate to the interface rather than opacity alone. See MDN’s opacity guidance.
