Yes—if you already own a compatible NAS and it is powered on anyway, running a prerecorded YouTube Live stream from it may cost less than renting a VPS. But there is no universal winner: the answer depends on the NAS’s extra electricity use, hardware and backup costs, your home upload and power reliability, and the full VPS bill. Measure your own NAS and compare both options at the same stream quality before deciding.

What a NAS needs to stream prerecorded video to YouTube

A NAS can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live if it can run a suitable encoder and maintain a reliable outbound internet connection. The encoder sends video to YouTube’s server URL using a stream key. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming from software on a computer or from a hardware encoder; the same basic workflow applies when the encoder runs on a NAS. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

  1. Check the exact NAS model. Confirm that it supports the encoder software you intend to use, along with the required version and workload. Container support is model- and software-specific; for example, Synology directs owners to check model compatibility for Container Manager rather than implying it works on every NAS. Consult Synology’s model-specific guidance or the official compatibility information for your own device.
  2. Enable YouTube Live and configure the encoder. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream, then enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned broadcast.
  3. Choose settings the NAS and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported codecs. Select resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for the actual video and stable upload capacity, rather than choosing settings the NAS or connection cannot maintain. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  4. Test a representative recording. Test with similar movement and audio to the intended stream. Check encoder load, YouTube stream health, upload stability, and what happens after a NAS or encoder restart. YouTube explicitly advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  5. Plan for interruptions and replays. Check whether the NAS encoder restarts and reconnects after a power, network, or software interruption; do not assume recovery is automatic. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that duration, so if a replay matters, plan separate shorter sessions or another archive workflow and verify YouTube’s current behavior.

Compare the full monthly cost, not just the VPS headline price

For a fair comparison, use the NAS’s incremental electricity cost if it would be running anyway, then add any costs you would incur specifically to support the stream. Compare that with a VPS able to run the same encoder workload, including relevant extras. Measure your own power draw and use your own electricity tariff; there is no established universal NAS-versus-VPS savings figure or break-even point.

Calculate the NAS’s extra electricity

  1. Measure the NAS at the wall in its normal state and while streaming. Use the difference in watts as the incremental draw if the NAS would otherwise remain on.
  2. Estimate monthly energy use: incremental watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per month.
  3. Multiply the resulting kWh by your electricity price per kWh. Add any attributable hardware, backup, or resilience costs. If you need to buy a NAS for this purpose, account for that purchase rather than treating it as free.

Include VPS charges beyond the instance price

The dated Hetzner examples below are Germany/Finland prices in its price-adjustment documentation effective June 15, 2026. They exclude VAT and IPv4; they are not universal VPS prices and do not establish that either size can handle a particular encoding workload.

NAS vs. VPS: the practical trade-offs

Factor NAS at home VPS
Cost basis Incremental power, plus any hardware, backup, or resilience costs attributable to streaming Instance rental plus applicable IP, tax, storage, bandwidth, and backup costs
Encoding capability Depends on the exact NAS CPU or accelerator and supported software; test the actual video, resolution, and frame rate Depends on the selected server configuration and encoder workload; verify capacity with the actual stream
Connection and continuity Depends on home upload headroom, router, ISP, and household power Hosted remotely, but availability depends on the provider and instance; the cited sources establish no uptime winner
Maintenance You manage NAS compatibility, software, network, and recovery You manage server setup and administration; provider-specific terms and add-ons also matter
Replay handling A 24/7 session exceeds YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold for streams under 12 hours The same YouTube session-length consideration applies

How to decide for your setup

  • A NAS is a plausible low-marginal-cost choice if you already own compatible hardware, leave it on, have stable power and ample upload capacity, and are comfortable maintaining the encoder and recovery process.
  • A VPS may suit you better if you want the stream hosted away from home, prefer not to depend on your household connection or power, or can administer a server more readily than adapting your NAS. Compare the complete provider bill and test the workload; a low instance price alone does not prove suitability.
  • A managed service is another option if convenience and reduced infrastructure maintenance matter more than minimizing marginal spend. Verify its current pricing and capabilities before choosing. StreamNeo is one YouTube-only cloud option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
