To capture a web page with the LambdaTest Screenshot API, send a JSON POST request to https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/ using HTTP Basic authentication, save the returned test_id, then use that ID in a GET request to retrieve the test status and screenshot records. Current API and support pages use the TestMu AI brand (formerly LambdaTest); the documented API host remains api.lambdatest.com.
What you need before sending a screenshot request
- A TestMu AI (formerly LambdaTest) account with the credentials required for API authentication.
- Python and the
requestspackage. Install it withpython -m pip install requests. - The target page URL and a chosen browser, browser version, operating system, and resolution configuration appropriate to your test.
The examples below use Python’s requests Basic-auth support as an implementation pattern based on the current API reference; they are not a vendor SDK or a claim that these requests were run. Store credentials in environment variables or a secret manager, not in source code.
Configure credentials outside your Python file
Set the environment variables in the shell or secret-management system where the script will run. The official Python example uses LT_USERNAME and LT_ACCESS_KEY; the current API reference specifies Basic authentication with the account username and access key.
For a Unix-like shell, for example:
export LT_USERNAME='your_username'
export LT_ACCESS_KEY='your_access_key'
In PowerShell, set them for the current session with $env:LT_USERNAME = 'your_username' and $env:LT_ACCESS_KEY = 'your_access_key'. Do not put credentials into the request URL or commit them to a repository.

Submit a screenshot test with Python
The start-test endpoint accepts a JSON payload and Basic authentication. This minimal example supplies the target URL and a configuration entry. Replace the illustrative configuration values with a browser, operating system, and resolution combination supported by your account and the current configuration reference.
import os
import requests
START_ENDPOINT = "https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/"
username = os.environ.get("LT_USERNAME")
access_key = os.environ.get("LT_ACCESS_KEY")
if not username or not access_key:
raise RuntimeError("Set LT_USERNAME and LT_ACCESS_KEY before running this script")
payload = {
"url": "https://example.com",
"configs": [
{
"os": "Windows 10",
"browser": "Chrome",
"browser_version": "latest",
"resolution": "1366x768"
}
]
}
response = requests.post(
START_ENDPOINT,
json=payload,
auth=(username, access_key),
timeout=60,
)
response.raise_for_status()
result = response.json()
test_id = result.get("test_id")
if not test_id:
raise RuntimeError(f"The API response did not include test_id: {result}")
print("Submitted screenshot test:", test_id)
Use the current TestMu AI Screenshot API reference to confirm accepted payload fields and configuration values. The start-test reference lists fields including url, defer_time, email, mac_res, win_res, tunnel, tunnel_identifier, username, password, callback_url, and configs. This example uses only url and configs; other scenarios may require additional fields.

Retrieve and inspect screenshot results
Once the API returns a test_id, request the test details from the screenshot endpoint followed by that ID. Inspect the response status and each screenshot record before using its image URL.
RESULT_ENDPOINT = f"https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/{test_id}/"
result_response = requests.get(
RESULT_ENDPOINT,
auth=(username, access_key),
timeout=60,
)
result_response.raise_for_status()
test_result = result_response.json()
print("Test status:", test_result.get("status"))
for screenshot in test_result.get("screenshots", []):
print({
"os": screenshot.get("os"),
"browser": screenshot.get("browser"),
"browser_version": screenshot.get("browser_version"),
"status": screenshot.get("status"),
"resolution": screenshot.get("resolution"),
"screenshot_url": screenshot.get("screenshot_url"),
"thumbnail_url": screenshot.get("thumbnail_url"),
"activity_id": screenshot.get("activity_id"),
})
Check the exact response shape in the start-test API reference and the result endpoint reference. A screenshot record can expose the operating system, browser and version, status, screenshot and thumbnail URLs, activity ID, and resolution. Treat each record’s status as meaningful: do not assume that a returned test ID means every configuration completed successfully.

Choose a useful browser and resolution matrix
Set up configurations around the environments that matter to your users or release criteria. The response’s OS, browser, browser-version, and resolution fields make it possible to see which environment each screenshot represents.
- Operating system: choose the platform your application supports or your QA plan requires.
- Browser and version: select the browser/version coverage relevant to your audience and compatibility requirements. The older guide examples illustrate payload shape, not a current browser catalog; verify availability in the current configuration reference.
- Resolution: include the viewport sizes needed to evaluate layout behavior. Avoid assuming a single desktop resolution represents mobile or other responsive breakpoints.
The official TestMu AI (formerly LambdaTest) Automated Screenshot API support guide describes capturing full-page screenshots of a URL through an API call to its cloud servers. The guide’s example configurations should not be treated as confirmation that historical browser versions remain available.

Example: submit and retrieve in one script
This complete flow validates credentials and HTTP responses, checks for a returned test ID, and then prints the result status and available screenshot records. It does not assume a fixed completion time or polling interval; if a result is not ready, follow the status and retrieval guidance in the current API documentation.
import os
import requests
BASE_ENDPOINT = "https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/"
username = os.environ.get("LT_USERNAME")

result_data = result.json()
print("Test status:", result_data.get("status"))
for item in result_data.get("screenshots", []):
if item.get("status"):
print(item["status"], item.get("screenshot_url"))
Python’s requests convention auth=(username, access_key) sends HTTP Basic authentication. The API reference describes the equivalent authorization header as Basic followed by the Base64-encoded username:password value; using the library avoids manually constructing that header.

Troubleshoot common request and result problems
- Missing credentials: the script raises a local error when either environment variable is absent. Export the variables in the same shell or runtime environment that launches Python.
- Authentication failure: verify the account username and access key, and confirm the request uses Basic authentication rather than placing credentials in a URL.
- HTTP error on POST or GET:
raise_for_status()surfaces non-success HTTP responses. Check the response details and the current API reference for endpoint, authentication, and payload requirements before retrying. - No
test_idin the start response: inspect the returned JSON rather than proceeding to construct a results URL. The request may not have produced the documented successful response. - Missing or unsuccessful screenshot records: check the overall test status and individual record statuses. Use only screenshot URLs associated with a completed successful record.
- Configuration rejected or unavailable: confirm the OS, browser, browser version, resolution, and any required payload fields against the current API reference. Do not rely on legacy browser versions shown in older examples.
- Slow or incomplete results: the documentation cited here does not establish a universal runtime, polling interval, or retry schedule. Use the status information and current vendor guidance rather than hard-coding an assumed completion time.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a direct screenshot API instead of configuring a hosted browser test, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For example, save a WebP response with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report page verdict and billing. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this API return the screenshot image in the POST response?
The documented start flow returns a test ID; retrieve the test details separately to inspect screenshot records and their URLs.
Can I use the same test ID to identify each browser configuration?
The result response contains screenshot records with environment details, including OS, browser, browser version, and resolution, so inspect records individually.
