First identify what your directory calls a “website thumbnail.” It may be a screenshot of a listing’s external website, an uploaded listing photo or logo, or an old cached version of the directory page. The fix depends on which one you have: correct the source or selection for the first two, regenerate WordPress image-size files when those are stale, and clear relevant caches when the displayed page is old.
The examples below use GeoDirectory because its image controls are documented. Other directory plugins may use different fields and refresh workflows; do not assume GeoDirectory’s settings apply to them.
Identify the thumbnail source before changing anything
Open a listing and determine what image the card is meant to show. If it is a picture of the business’s website, the plugin may be capturing a URL field. If it is a business photo or logo, it is likely a listing upload or a fallback image. If the image looks correct when opened directly but the directory still shows an old version, suspect a page or image cache.
- External website screenshot: A screenshot generated from the listing’s website URL. This is distinct from an uploaded image.
- Listing image or logo: An image attached to the listing; the selected or first image may be used on the card.
- Stale display: The underlying image may be correct, while a cached page or image response continues to show an older version.
In GeoDirectory, listing images are uploaded to the listing, while website screenshots can be associated with a URL field. Its changelog records a Post Images widget capability that can generate screenshots of URL fields by appending _screenshot to the field name, such as website_screenshot. Confirm the actual field name and listing data on your site rather than assuming that every URL field is configured this way.

Refresh an external website screenshot
Check the URL field and plugin setup
- Inspect the listing’s website URL and confirm it is current and publicly reachable.
- Check the directory plugin’s field configuration and the listing’s stored values. In GeoDirectory, the documented naming example for a screenshot field is
website_screenshot, formed by appending_screenshotto the URL field name. - Confirm the installed plugin version and consult its current documentation or support information for the screenshot-generation workflow available in that version.
GeoDirectory’s documentation and changelog establish URL-field screenshot generation, but they do not establish a universal manual “refresh now” button, a standard recapture interval, or a single workflow that applies to every installation. Do not expect WordPress thumbnail regeneration to recapture an external webpage: that tool rebuilds derivatives of media-library images, not necessarily the remote screenshot. If the screenshot remains old, verify the plugin’s current controls and whether your setup uses a third-party screenshot service.
Refresh an uploaded listing photo, logo, or fallback image
Choose the right source image
GeoDirectory’s listing images can be uploaded through the frontend or backend listing uploader. Its image documentation describes the first uploaded image as the featured image, and images can be reordered by drag and drop. If the wrong photo appears, reorder the images so the intended one is first, or replace the listing’s image with the correct file.

GeoDirectory’s GD Post Images display options include a single or featured image, company logo with fallback to the featured image, slider, gallery, and custom image fields. For a placeholder or unexpected image, inspect the listing’s logo and uploaded images as well as the configured fallback source. The documented fallback order is company logo, first/featured uploaded image, category default listing image, custom-post-type default image, then archive default image.
Check the selected image size
GeoDirectory uses WordPress image sizes and lets GD Post Images select from sizes configured in WordPress Media settings. If the source image is right but the card is blurry, cropped unexpectedly, or missing a derivative after a theme or dimension change, inspect the chosen size and whether that size’s derivative exists. GeoDirectory says it does not process uploaded images itself; WordPress or other plugins handle image processing, so an optimization or image-processing plugin can also affect the result.

Regenerate WordPress thumbnail files when derivatives are the problem
Use a thumbnail-regeneration tool only when the original listing image is correct but WordPress-generated size variants are missing, stale, or based on older dimensions. Regeneration is not the fix for a wrong listing image, a remote website screenshot that has not been recaptured, or a cached archive page.
- Confirm the image-size dimensions currently required by your theme or directory layout.
- Use a compatible thumbnail-regeneration tool to rebuild the affected media-library image derivatives. WordPress.org lists Regenerate Thumbnails for rebuilding one or more media-library images after image sizes or themes change.
- GeoDirectory’s changelog also records: “Tool added to regenerate thumbnails for the post images – ADDED.” The exact menu location can depend on the installed GeoDirectory version; check that version’s interface rather than relying on an assumed path.
- After regeneration, open the image file or listing again. If the source and derivative are correct but the directory card remains old, proceed to cache clearing.
Clear caches if the directory still shows the old image
Regenerating an image derivative does not necessarily invalidate cached page output. Clear the relevant layers in order, then reload the listing and archive:

- Clear the cache in the directory or page-cache plugin that serves the listing.
- Clear host or server caching, including a CDN cache if the site uses one. Some hosts manage server caching themselves or restrict which cache plugins are permitted; use the host’s documented control or contact the host if needed.
- Test in a private browsing window or clear the browser cache so an old local response does not mislead you.
For WP Super Cache, GeoDirectory’s example path is WordPress → Settings → WP Super Cache → Delete Cache. That path is specific to WP Super Cache; other cache plugins and hosting providers have different controls.
Verify which layer is still wrong
- Reopen the listing and the directory archive after clearing caches.
- Check the source image or screenshot URL directly, then compare it with the image rendered in the listing card.
- If the source itself is wrong, correct the listing upload, URL, field configuration, or screenshot workflow.
- If the source is right but only the card is wrong, inspect the archive template’s image element and selected image size. GeoDirectory’s performance guidance describes using GD Post Meta for a single archive-item image with the image set to thumbnail; that is a rendering choice, not a way to recapture a website screenshot.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a listing’s external website, ScreenshotNeo can return one from a single request. This produces a screenshot file; it does not automatically configure a WordPress directory plugin’s custom field or attach the result to a listing. Check your plugin’s supported field or upload workflow for that step.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The wrong business photo appears | The desired image is not first, or the card is configured to use a logo, fallback, or custom field. | Review the listing’s uploaded images, featured-image order, logo, and GD Post Images settings. |
| A placeholder appears instead of the listing image | No usable image exists at the selected source, or a fallback source is being used. | Inspect the logo, first uploaded image, category default, custom-post-type default, and archive default in that order. |
| The photo is blurry or oddly sized | The selected WordPress image size or its derivative may not match the current layout. | Check WordPress Media image sizes, the size selected in the directory display, and image-processing or optimization plugins. |
| The website screenshot is old | The URL field, screenshot-generation behavior, or external capture workflow may not have recaptured it. | Verify the URL field and installed plugin version. Thumbnail regeneration alone does not establish that the remote page was recaptured. |
| The source looks right but the listing card is old | A page, server, CDN, or browser cache is serving stale output. | Clear the relevant cache layers and retest in a private window. |
| Only archive cards are wrong | The archive template may select a different field or image size than the listing page. | Inspect the template’s image element and selected size, rather than changing the underlying source without checking it. |
Apply the fix at the right scope
Use the smallest corrective action that matches the fault: correct one listing’s source or image order for a single-item issue; regenerate derivatives when image sizes are the issue; adjust the archive rendering when only cards select the wrong output; and clear only the cache layers that may be serving stale content. For a different directory plugin, use that plugin’s own documentation for field names, screenshot refresh controls, and image display settings.
