In a browser-driven capture, wait for the page content you need to appear, then wait for document.fonts.ready in the page context before taking the screenshot. This lets the document’s used fonts and related layout operations settle. If a particular font or glyph must be present, explicitly load and verify it as well: the general readiness promise does not prove that your preferred face loaded successfully.
Wait for page content, then wait for fonts
A navigation event alone may not mean a single-page application has finished rendering the content that belongs in the thumbnail. Wait for the relevant content first, then ask the browser to finish font loading and associated layout work. Playwright documents several navigation states, but networkidle is not a general-purpose readiness strategy; choose a condition tied to the content you need.
This Node.js example uses Playwright. Replace the URL and, if possible, the body visibility check with a locator for the page element that identifies the final content you want to capture.

It is a useful document-level signal, not a guarantee that every desired remote font loaded or that content injected later will not change the page. If the application adds or replaces content after this wait, wait for that content and await the font set again.

When a specific font or glyph must be present
For precise typography, request the intended face and representative text explicitly with document.fonts.load(). The sample text matters because web fonts may be subset by characters. Check the returned faces’ status, and where visual fidelity is critical, verify the rendered result too.

An empty result or an unexpected status is a reason to inspect the font-family declaration, network response, CORS configuration, and whether the sample includes the needed characters. Font loading success alone does not establish that the page is using that face for a particular element; inspect computed styles or compare the rendering when that distinction matters.
The API also supports loading through FontFace.load() or FontFaceSet.load(). Explicit loading is more targeted than waiting for the document’s current font set. See MDN’s CSS Font Loading API documentation.

Make thumbnail captures repeatable
Font readiness helps prevent captures taken midway through font loading, but it does not make every capture pixel-identical. For repeatable comparisons, keep the browser engine and version, operating system, browser settings, and headless configuration consistent. Playwright identifies these as potential sources of rendering differences in its visual comparisons guidance.
Playwright’s screenshot assertion helper waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparison. That can help stabilize screenshot tests, but it does not verify that the intended font face loaded; use explicit font checks when that is the requirement. See PageAssertions.

Troubleshoot waits that do not produce the expected thumbnail
- The thumbnail uses a fallback font:
document.fonts.readycan settle even if a preferred face failed. Explicitly calldocument.fonts.load()for the expected face and representative text, then check its status and the rendered element. - The page changes after the font wait: Wait for the application-specific content first. If later content introduces new text or font styles, wait for that state and call
document.fonts.readyagain before capture. - The font wait or capture times out: Bound navigation, locator, font-wait, and screenshot operations with timeouts. Investigate font requests and browser logs rather than treating network quiet as proof of font readiness. A report opened September 29, 2026, describes a pending
document.fonts.readyin one Linux WebKit 26.6 configuration with Playwright 1.63.0; a Playwright 1.60.0 control completed. That issue does not establish how common the problem is, its cause, or a general fix: Playwright issue #42986. - Captures differ across machines: Standardize the browser engine/version and host environment before comparing output. A font wait cannot remove rendering differences caused by other environment changes.
