What “unlimited traffic” does—and does not—mean
OVHcloud’s VPS FAQ says VPS offers include unlimited traffic and describes the bandwidth shown for a VPS as the guaranteed minimum allocated to the service. These are different measures: traffic is the volume transferred, while bandwidth is the rate at which data can move. A service may have no ordinary transfer allowance limit and still face throughput constraints, regional quotas, or policy restrictions.
Those published terms do not guarantee that one VPS will sustain a particular YouTube bitrate continuously. Actual suitability depends on the offer, location, outbound performance and applicable service terms.

Unmetered VPS offer
The current OVHcloud UK unmetered VPS offer page describes 500 Mbps of public bandwidth and unlimited traffic for the offer it covers. Do not assume that figure applies to every OVHcloud region, VPS tier or account: verify the specification presented for the exact service you plan to use.

APAC quota exception on that offer page
The same page identifies monthly quotas for VPS solutions in Mumbai, Singapore and Sydney: 1 TB for VPS-1 and VPS-2, 3 TB for VPS-3 and VPS-4, and 4 TB for VPS-5 and VPS-6. After the relevant quota, bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps. These are the named regional tiers on that page, not a universal quota schedule for every OVHcloud VPS.
Intensive or excessive use terms
OVHcloud’s US service-specific terms say the company reserves the right to limit public bandwidth if a customer’s intensive use is detrimental to other customers. Separate VPS specific conditions state that service bandwidth may be restricted to 1 Mbps until the end of the current billing period in cases of excessive use. These documents are not necessarily the terms governing every customer; check the current contract and service-specific terms for your region and VPS.

Compare the VPS with your YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, and recommend RTMPS for live streaming. For H.264, the page lists 17 Mbps at 1080p60 and 50 Mbps at 4K60. Those figures are YouTube ingestion recommendations; they do not certify that a particular VPS or network route will sustain them.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% of upload capacity in reserve, checking outbound upload rather than relying on download speed, and allowing for other simultaneous network use. Using that 20% headroom, a 17 Mbps target calls for at least 20.4 Mbps of upload capacity before additional competing traffic or protocol overhead. This is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s recommendation, not an OVHcloud guarantee.

How to assess a VPS for a continuous stream
- Confirm the exact location and tier. Use the offer and account details for the region and VPS plan you will actually run; do not transfer a specification from another geography.
- Check public bandwidth and its meaning. Note the stated rate, and distinguish a minimum allocation from a promise of uninterrupted performance.
- Look for quotas and post-quota behavior. If a monthly traffic allowance or reduced-speed cap applies, compare it with your expected continuous usage.
- Read the applicable terms. Check whether intensive or excessive use can trigger bandwidth restrictions for your particular contract.
- Match the encoder target. Identify YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate, then plan for at least 20% upload headroom and any other traffic on the connection.
- Evaluate real outbound performance. A plan’s published specification alone does not establish the sustained upload rate of the route to YouTube. No measured continuous YouTube throughput for a specific OVHcloud VPS tier is established here.
