Generate one screenshot for each destination URL, save the image in your static site’s published assets, and reference it from the matching link card. You can capture pages locally with Playwright or use a hosted screenshot API. For a small set of stable links, local generation is a straightforward way to keep durable image files alongside the page; an API can be more convenient when you want capture handled remotely.

Playwright: generate files locally
Playwright can navigate to a page and save a screenshot to a file. It also supports viewport and full-page captures, screenshots of individual elements, and returning image bytes in a buffer. Hosted capture API: request screenshots remotely
A hosted screenshot API accepts a URL and capture options, then returns an image or image URL. OpenGraph.io documents a screenshot endpoint with format, quality, dimensions, selectors, excluded selectors, dark mode, caching, and delay options; it names thumbnail generation for link previews as a use case. These are documented features, not an independent performance comparison. Its screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours, so download or cache an image you need to keep on a static page. The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. Install Playwright in a project first, then run the script with a list of URLs. It saves viewport screenshots to a local thumbnails directory. A viewport image is often a compact preview for a link card; it is not a universal standard, so inspect your actual destinations and adjust the viewport or capture approach to suit them.

}Install the Playwright package and browser binaries using the installation instructions for your project and platform. The script uses one page for sequential captures, a fixed viewport, a 30-second navigation timeout, and a per-URL error handler so one inaccessible destination does not stop the rest. If networkidle does not occur on a page that keeps network requests open, choose a different navigation wait condition or wait for a page-specific selector instead. The example’s timeout is a script setting, not a guarantee that every page will finish loading in that time.
Choose the screenshot shape
- Viewport: Use the default viewport capture for a compact preview. Keep the viewport consistent across destinations if the cards should have comparable framing.
- Full page: Set
fullPage: truewhen the preview needs to show the entire scrollable page. This can produce much taller images than a card needs. - Element: Use a locator’s screenshot method when the desired preview is a particular region rather than the page. Confirm the target selector exists on every destination where you use it.
- Buffer: Omit the file path and use the returned image data when you need to resize, transform, or store the screenshot through another part of your build process.

Save and connect the image files to your static page
- Keep URLs as data. Maintain the destinations in an array or other source of truth so generation and link markup use the same URL-to-thumbnail mapping.
- Generate the captures. Choose viewport or full-page output, consistent dimensions, and any element or page behavior that matters for the preview.
- Publish durable assets. Put generated image files in the asset directory your static site publishes. The correct directory depends on your site and build setup; the screenshot documentation does not prescribe a framework-specific location.
- Reference each file in its matching card. For example:
<a href="https://example.com"><img src="/thumbnails/1.png" alt="Preview of Example"><span>Example</span></a>. If the image is decorative because the linked title already identifies the destination, use empty alternative text (alt=""). If it conveys useful information, describe that information briefly. - Keep the link useful without the image. Ensure the destination title remains visible and the anchor still works if an image is missing or fails to load.
- Regenerate deliberately. Rerun capture when destinations or important page designs change. There is no universally established refresh interval; choose one based on how often the linked pages change.

Keep thumbnails reliable and manageable
Check real destinations
A capture option cannot ensure that every site permits access, loads correctly, or is reachable from the machine or service doing the capture. Inspect representative images, including pages with unusual layouts or slow-loading content, and keep a fallback for failed captures.
Balance consistency and fidelity
A fixed viewport makes captures easier to compare, but responsive sites may show different content at different sizes. Full-page captures include more context but can be too tall for cards. An element capture can focus attention, but it depends on a selector that may differ or change between destinations.

Manage image size and refreshes
Output dimensions, image format, quality, and device scale affect the resulting files. Choose settings based on how the images appear in your cards and how much storage or transfer your site can accommodate. No universally ideal thumbnail dimensions or refresh schedule is established by the cited documentation.

- Navigation times out: The destination may be slow, inaccessible, or keep network activity open. Check that the URL is reachable from the capture environment; in Playwright, adjust the timeout or use a suitable wait condition or selector.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: The page may not have finished rendering its content when captured. Wait for a relevant selector or add a deliberate delay, then inspect the result. A delay can help with late rendering but does not guarantee success.
- An element screenshot fails: The selector may not match, may appear late, or may identify a hidden element. Confirm it on the destination and wait for the element before capturing.
- Images look inconsistent: Destinations may respond differently to viewport size or device scale. Standardize those settings, then review whether a viewport, full-page, or element capture best fits the card.
- A hosted image link stops working: If using a temporary screenshot URL, its lifetime may have ended. OpenGraph.io documents a 24-hour expiry; download or cache the image and serve your own copy for a long-lived page.
- A thumbnail is missing from the published page: Check that the file was written into a directory included in the site’s published output and that the image’s
srcpoints to the correct path.
Frequently asked questions
Should a thumbnail show the whole destination page?
Not necessarily. A viewport screenshot is usually more compact; full-page capture is available when showing the complete page matters. Choose based on how the image will appear in your cards.
Can I capture a page without saving a file immediately?
Yes. Playwright can return screenshot bytes in a buffer for further processing or storage instead of writing directly to a path.
