If Screenshotlayer omits or mangles Devanagari, first determine whether the problem is in the page’s Unicode text, the font and its delivery, script shaping, or the timing and freshness of the capture. Screenshotlayer says its renderer can process webfonts and CSS3, and its API documents a custom stylesheet URL and a capture delay. Those are useful things to test, but the public documentation does not promise Devanagari-specific shaping or explain the renderer’s installed fonts.
Why Devanagari may look different in a screenshot
Devanagari rendering is a chain, not a single encoding switch. The page must contain the intended Unicode text; the browser must select a font with the required glyphs; that font must load; and the renderer must shape the script correctly. Dynamic page content or a capture made before the font is ready can also affect the image.
The Unicode Standard describes mapping Unicode sequences to glyphs and fallback behavior when a conjunct is unavailable. That makes an encoding problem and a font or shaping problem distinct possibilities. A page that looks correct on your computer does not prove that a hosted renderer received the same font or used the same fallback.
Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says its rendering engine is capable of processing “Graphs, Canvas, Webfonts or CSS3.” This is a general capability statement, not a guarantee about a particular Devanagari font, conjunct, or shaping result. Its public documentation does not identify the capture workers’ browser or operating-system font inventory.

Diagnose the failure in order
- Compare the exact page. Open the same target URL in an ordinary browser and compare it with the Screenshotlayer image. If the text is broken in both, start with the source page. If only the capture differs, investigate what the remote renderer receives and loads.
- Check the text and document encoding. Confirm that the page contains the intended Unicode characters, rather than text encoded for a legacy font-specific mapping. Do not treat a correct appearance in one local environment as proof that the underlying text is correct.
- Inspect the computed font stack. Identify the font actually selected for the affected text and confirm it covers the Devanagari characters and conjuncts in use. A missing glyph can result in fallback or substituted output even when the text itself is correct.
- Verify webfont delivery. In the page’s browser context, check that the font file request succeeds. Look for failed requests, redirects, cross-origin restrictions, and unsupported or inaccessible font resources. General support for webfonts does not guarantee that every font URL or format loads in every capture.
- Test a stylesheet with an explicit font. If you can host a stylesheet publicly, use Screenshotlayer’s optional
css_urlparameter to apply a font stack that includes the intended Devanagari-capable webfont. Confirm independently that the stylesheet and font are reachable from the public page context. - Allow more time, then request a fresh image. Use the documented
delaycontrol to test whether the page or its font is loading after capture begins. There is no universal delay that fixes every page. If the displayed result might be cached, make a fresh request or adjust cache behavior as documented before comparing results. - Escalate renderer-specific questions. If the same public page and font work in a browser but not in Screenshotlayer after these checks, ask Screenshotlayer support whether current workers can preload or install fonts and whether font-loading diagnostics are available. Public documentation does not establish either capability.
What to test in the Screenshotlayer request
The Screenshotlayer API accepts a target URL and documents optional stylesheet, delay, and cache controls. Check the exact parameter names and behavior in the API specifications. Change one variable at a time: first the font stylesheet, then capture delay, then cache behavior. That makes it easier to tell which change affected the result.
