For one H.264 UHD input and one UHD output, Google Cloud’s listed us-central1 Live Stream API rates add up to $2.35 per active hour, or about $1,692 for 720 hours. That is an estimate for encoding resources—not a complete bill for every 24/7 YouTube loop, and not a market-wide average. Your actual cost depends on codec, region, outputs, active time, and whether you also pay for playlist playout, distribution, or other services.
First decide what the estimate needs to cover
“Cloud transcoding” can refer to only the encoding stage or to a complete hosted loop. For a prerecorded video sent to YouTube Live, distinguish these costs:
- Encoding resources: processing the input and generating one or more outputs in the cloud.
- Playlist playout and operations: keeping prerecorded material cycling, managing a schedule, and recovering the broadcast if it stops.
- Viewer delivery: packaging and distributing the stream to viewers outside YouTube, often through a delivery network.
These are different architectures and should not be added together automatically. If your destination is YouTube, YouTube handles viewer playback renditions: it says it “will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” You may not need to create a multi-rendition ladder yourself just to serve YouTube viewers.
What one continuously active UHD encode costs on Google Cloud
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists us-central1 hourly rates for UHD input and output. The following calculations use one input and one output, with the channel active for a continuous 720-hour month. They are rate-card arithmetic, not a quote or a measured customer bill.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Codec | UHD input | UHD output | Combined per hour | 720-hour arithmetic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 (AVC) | $0.85/hour | $1.50/hour | $2.35/hour | $1,692 |
| H.265 (HEVC) | $0.42/hour | $3.00/hour | $3.42/hour | $2,462.40 |
These figures cover the listed input and output resources only. The codec affects the two sides differently: the listed HEVC input rate is lower than AVC’s, but its output rate is higher, making the one-input/one-output HEVC pair more expensive in this example. Check the current rates and region on Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing page before budgeting.
Google’s other charges to check
- Google bills for the time a channel remains active, even if it has no input stream. There is a 10-minute minimum, with time after that rounded up to the nearest minute.
- A distribution endpoint is listed at $0.75/hour; distribution streams are billed as additional outputs. Include them only if your architecture uses them.
- Automatic captions or translations are listed at $0.75 per minute for each unique generated text-output language. If used continuously, this can outweigh ordinary encoding charges; do not include it when the feature is not enabled.
- The pricing page states no free usage tier.
- Storage, egress, taxes, and other workflow services may add costs. Confirm which apply to your setup rather than treating the encoding calculation as the full bill.
Why adding renditions changes the estimate
Each additional output can add cost. Google’s published us-central1 example for two UHD H.264 inputs and seven mixed H.264/HEVC outputs is $8.89/hour. That example is a particular multi-input, multi-output configuration—not the price of a single 4K60 YouTube feed. It shows why counting only one UHD output can badly understate a workflow that creates several renditions or uses redundant inputs.

For a first-pass estimate, use:
Monthly cloud encode cost ≈ (hourly input charges + hourly output charges + hourly add-ons) × active hours + separate distribution or transfer charges.
Count every input and output at its applicable codec, resolution, and frame-rate tier; use actual active hours; then add only the endpoints and services your architecture needs. For a continuous 30-day month, 720 hours is the assumption used in the examples above. Verify the provider’s current regional schedule before relying on any rate.

What AWS examples do—and do not—tell you
AWS MediaLive also prices a configuration rather than a generic “4K stream.” Its price depends on inputs, outputs, codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and add-ons. AWS’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, gives $21.791/hour for a standard US East (N. Virginia) channel example with two UHD inputs and six outputs, including a UHD HEVC output at 30fps. It is not comparable to Google’s one-input/one-output estimate above: the number of inputs and outputs, redundancy, and output configuration differ, and the example’s UHD HEVC output is 30fps rather than 60fps. AWS also says a channel can incur charges while running without input or output activity; data transfer may add cost depending on how content leaves AWS. Qualifying usage may have reserved pricing with a 12-month commitment; AWS publishes savings of up to 75% versus on-demand for applicable resources. See AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing for current configuration details.
Encoding is not the same as public delivery
AWS’s live-streaming architecture example for about 10,000 viewers watching a one-hour 1080p event estimates approximately $13.04 for encoding and packaging plus $1,492.56 for distribution of 18,017 GB, for $1,505.60 total. This is AWS’s illustrative scenario, not a 4K60 quote and not a cost to send a YouTube-only stream. It demonstrates why viewer delivery can dwarf encoding when you operate the public delivery stack yourself. Do not apply that distribution figure to a stream delivered to viewers by YouTube. Details are in AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS cost example.

Use YouTube’s current ingest settings, not an old sample
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for 2160p60 AV1/H.265 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264. Those are ingest recommendations, not a cloud-provider hourly price. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
AWS published a 2021 technical example sending 3840×2160 HEVC output at 59.94fps and 20 Mbps to YouTube HLS ingest. Treat that as evidence of a documented technical path, not a current recommended bitrate or a price quote. Its bitrate differs from YouTube’s current general recommendation, so use YouTube’s current settings for your own stream. The AWS example does not establish suitability for every channel or content type; see AWS’s 4K/HDR-to-YouTube technical guide.

Choose the workflow that matches the job
Self-managed cloud encoding
Use this when you need control over the cloud encoding pipeline and can configure and operate its inputs, outputs, and any redundancy. Build the estimate from the provider’s actual region and resource tiers; do not assume the one-input/one-output benchmark includes playlist management, monitoring, or recovery.
Managed cloud loop hosting
For a prerecorded playlist that must stay live, a managed service may bundle playout and broadcast under a subscription instead of separate hourly resources. Compare the actual plan that includes your required resolution and frame rate, along with included broadcast time, storage and playlist limits, destinations, restart monitoring, and cancellation or overage terms. Streamloop advertises 24/7 playlist broadcasting, support up to 4K/60fps, and a $4/month entry price, but its page does not establish that the entry price includes 4K60. Verify the plan before treating that figure as a 4K60 quote.
Local encoding to YouTube
If your media is already encoded and you can keep a computer and internet connection running, a local encoder may avoid cloud encoding charges. The trade-off is that you provide and maintain the running system and connection. The research supports no particular hardware recommendation or cost estimate for this option.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not require a computer or home connection to stay on, streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, recovery, and StreamNeo team support; the same product is included on every plan, with billing length changing. India-based customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans or compare cloud and PC costs. Start the free first day with no card.
