If the Screenshotlayer API returns 403, do not assume your access key is invalid or your quota is exhausted: Screenshotlayer’s published API error list does not define a 403 cause. First determine whether the response is a structured Screenshotlayer error or a bare denial from another layer, then check the endpoint, key, target URL, account plan, and network path.
First, identify what returned the 403
Screenshotlayer documents API errors as JSON with success: false and an error object containing a numeric code, a type, and plain-text info. Its documentation gives an invalid-key example with code 104 and type invalid_access_key. The published error list also mentions missing or invalid keys, an invalid API function, a usage-limit error, and an invalid target URL—but it does not list HTTP 403 or assign a cause to it. Screenshotlayer API documentation
That distinction matters. A JSON body with the documented error fields offers a specific lead. A bare 403, or an HTML response branded by a proxy, CDN, firewall, or hosting platform, has no documented Screenshotlayer-specific explanation. Its source is undetermined until the response or support traces establish which layer denied the request; this is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed Screenshotlayer rule.
Save a safe response record
- Record the HTTP status, response headers, response body, and request time in UTC.
- Save any request or trace ID returned in the headers.
- Redact the access key, secret key, and any sensitive target URL before sharing the record.
- If the body has the documented JSON structure, note its
code,type, andinfovalues.
A response body and headers can help distinguish an API-generated error from a denial by an intermediary. Avoid repeated blind retries: Screenshotlayer’s terms describe usage limits and throttling in specified circumstances.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the endpoint and required parameters
Screenshot requests use the /api/capture endpoint and require an access_key and a target url. The target URL must include its protocol, such as https://. Use the endpoint and transport supported by your account, following the current Screenshotlayer API documentation.
Inspect the actual outgoing request—not just the source code that builds it—for these common mistakes:

Keep credentials out of browser address bars that may be captured in screenshots, logs, analytics, issue trackers, or support forums. Screenshotlayer’s terms say issued credentials must be referenced in API calls and that users are responsible for keeping them secret. Screenshotlayer terms

Retrieve or reset the key
For a registered account, Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says the key is available in the Account Dashboard and can be reset there. If the key might have been rotated, copied incorrectly, or exposed, reset it, update the application’s secret store, and test using the updated value. Do not share the live key while asking for help. Check the account’s current entitlement
Review the dashboard for the account’s subscription, allowance, usage, notices, and any account-level restriction. Screenshotlayer’s current pricing page describes a free plan with 100 monthly snapshots and says overage fees apply after an account reaches 100% of its monthly allowance. The older API specification says a plan allowance can produce a usage-limit error, while its error table identifies that condition as code 104. These documents do not establish that every account stops at the same threshold or that an exhausted quota produces a 403. Confirm what applies to your account in its dashboard and current plan terms. Screenshotlayer pricing API specification
Check HTTPS availability
Screenshotlayer’s pricing page says paid subscriptions include 256-bit HTTPS encryption, and its API specification describes HTTPS as a paid-customer feature. If HTTPS is available for your account, use the HTTPS API endpoint to protect credentials in transit. Documentation examples using HTTP may be legacy examples; they are not a reason to prefer unencrypted transport. Check the current account terms if you are unsure whether HTTPS is included. Separate an account issue from a network-path denial
If the endpoint and account checks do not explain the response, compare the same sanitized request from the application host and a controlled alternate network, but only where you are authorized to do so. Do not use another person’s account or send credentials through a third-party request tool.
- Fails from both paths: Preserve the response details and ask Screenshotlayer support to check the account and request trace.
- Fails only from the application host: As a practical diagnostic inference—not a documented Screenshotlayer procedure—inspect that environment’s outbound proxy, firewall, DNS, gateway, and hosting-provider controls.
- Response changes between attempts: Record each UTC timestamp and response. A changing result may help support identify which layer handled each request.
Keep the number of test requests small and controlled. Screenshotlayer’s terms note that the service may sometimes be inaccessible or inoperable, but do not give a 403-specific recovery procedure. Screenshotlayer terms

If you need a screenshot service rather than to keep troubleshooting this API, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup options can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say which page verdict and billing status applied. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Example cURL request (replace the target URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Screenshotlayer 403 prove the access key is invalid?
No. The published error list documents an invalid-key error but does not define HTTP 403. Check the response body and headers to identify what returned it.
Does Screenshotlayer document a specific fix for HTTP 403?
The cited public API documentation and terms do not provide a 403-specific cause or recovery procedure. Preserve a redacted response and UTC timestamp for support.
