If you want to keep visual regression testing self-hosted, start with Playwright Test screenshot assertions when your team already uses Playwright, and consider Loki when your coverage is centered on Storybook components. BackstopJS remains an option for scenario-based page captures, but its project README currently requests a new maintainer. Choose by workflow fit, baseline review, rendering consistency, and maintenance—not an assumed speed or cost advantage.

What a self-hosted alternative needs to do

Visual regression testing captures rendered pages or components and compares new screenshots with approved reference images. A useful replacement for BackstopJS therefore needs more than image capture: consider how tests are defined, where baselines live, how changes are reviewed and approved, and whether the same environment can render them consistently.

“Self-hosted” here means keeping the testing workflow in your own development and CI environment rather than relying on a managed visual-review service. Hosted tools such as Argos, Chromatic, and Percy may be relevant if that constraint changes, but they are not direct self-hosted replacements.

Option Best fit Workflow Trade-off
Playwright Test screenshot assertions Teams already using Playwright for browser tests toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on the first run and compares later runs against them. References can be committed to version control. Tests and suitable coverage must be written and maintained. Rendering can vary between environments. Playwright documentation.
Loki Component libraries represented in Storybook Storybook-centered visual regression testing. Its component-and-story focus may be less natural for large collections of arbitrary page scenarios. Verify current compatibility and maintenance before adopting it. Loki project.
BackstopJS Teams that want scenario-oriented page checks Configure page scenarios, run screenshot comparisons, inspect a report, and approve updated references. Its README requests a new maintainer or owner; that is a maintenance signal, not proof that the project is abandoned. BackstopJS repository.
reg-suit Teams that already have a screenshot-capture workflow and want comparison/reporting around it Described in search material as an image comparison and reporting integration, not a browser-capture replacement. Current official documentation and maintenance status are not established here. Treat it as a lead and verify the project before selecting it. UI Verify search result.

If managed review is acceptable, Argos, Chromatic, and Percy are adjacent options rather than self-hosted substitutes. Compare their current deployment details and terms directly; the available material does not establish current prices or feature parity.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which alternative fits your workflow?

Choose Playwright when browser tests are already part of your suite

Playwright is the most direct fit when your team already writes Playwright tests and wants screenshot comparison alongside existing browser assertions. The first execution of toHaveScreenshot() creates the expected image; later executions compare against it. Review generated references and commit approved baselines so a code change cannot silently redefine the expected appearance.

Choose Loki when Storybook stories are the unit of coverage

If your visual surface is a component library and its states are already expressed as Storybook stories, Loki’s Storybook-oriented workflow may fit more naturally than page-by-page scenarios. Check its current compatibility with your Storybook and browser setup, and confirm project maintenance before committing to it.

Keep BackstopJS in consideration for scenario-based pages

BackstopJS provides a standalone scenario-and-report workflow. Its README describes configuring URLs, viewports, selectors, cookies, readiness conditions, and interactions, then testing captures and approving changed references. It also lists an in-browser report, Docker rendering, and Playwright/Puppeteer interaction scripts. The repository README currently says it needs a new maintainer or owner; check the repository before adopting it because that notice may change.

Validate reg-suit before treating it as a replacement

Available descriptions position reg-suit around screenshot comparison and reporting for an existing capture process. That does not establish that it supplies the browser capture or scenario definition you may rely on in BackstopJS. Verify its current documentation, integrations, compatibility, and maintenance status before shortlisting it.

How to compare candidates before migrating

Use a small representative set of pages and components to evaluate the workflow—not just whether two images can be compared. Make these checks explicit:

  • Coverage shape: Do you need arbitrary page scenarios, reusable component stories, or both?
  • Test integration: Can the tool run in your existing test command and CI pipeline, or does it introduce a separate workflow?
  • Baseline lifecycle: Where are reference images stored, how are they reviewed, and who approves updates?
  • Review output: Can a developer quickly understand which regions changed and whether a change is expected?
  • Rendering repeatability: Can local and CI runs use the same OS, browser version, settings, and relevant hardware conditions?
  • Maintenance and compatibility: Check the project’s current releases and supported versions against your browser, framework, and CI setup.

The available sources do not establish a general speed or cost winner. Benchmark your own representative workflow if those factors decide the choice.

Keeping screenshot comparisons reliable

Rendering is not perfectly portable. Playwright warns that host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can change screenshots. A baseline created on one setup may therefore differ from a run on another even when the application code has not changed.

  1. Pin the test environment. Use the same operating system and browser version for baseline generation and CI comparisons wherever possible.
  2. Control rendering settings. Keep browser configuration and relevant runtime conditions consistent between runs.
  3. Reduce volatile content. Use Playwright’s documented screenshot options, such as a stylesheet to hide unstable elements, where that is appropriate for the test.
  4. Set comparison tolerance deliberately. Playwright supports diff thresholds; choose one that reflects acceptable rendering variation without masking meaningful UI changes.
  5. Review before updating references. A changed screenshot is a proposed baseline change, not automatic proof that the new appearance is correct.

See Playwright’s screenshot comparison guidance for its baseline behavior and environment cautions.

If you need a clean capture without building a browser-and-baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server made by Yorker Media. It is not a self-hosted visual-regression runner, so it does not replace local baseline review. It can provide screenshot inputs for other workflows with one GET request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Migration and troubleshooting checklist

Baselines differ on CI but not locally

  • Likely cause: The local and CI hosts, browser versions, rendering settings, or headless behavior differ.
  • Fix: Align and pin the environments used to create and compare references. Regenerate a baseline only after reviewing the visual change.

A Playwright test creates a new reference unexpectedly

  • Likely cause: No reference exists yet for that test, or the test is running in a context where its snapshot output is new.
  • Fix: Inspect the generated image, confirm it is the intended state, then commit the approved reference. Check the Playwright snapshot documentation for the expected baseline workflow.

Story coverage does not represent important page flows

  • Likely cause: A component-oriented workflow is being asked to cover full-page scenarios and interactions.
  • Fix: Add page-level browser tests or select a scenario-based approach for those flows; do not assume story coverage alone represents them.

A candidate’s compatibility or maintenance is unclear

  • Likely cause: Project support can change, and not all candidate details are established in the sources cited here.
  • Fix: Check the candidate’s current official repository, documentation, releases, and compatibility notes against your stack before migrating.

Frequently asked questions

Are the hosted options self-hosted replacements?

No. Argos, Chromatic, and Percy are hosted alternatives to consider only if a managed review workflow is acceptable.

Is the BackstopJS maintainer notice proof that the project is abandoned?

No. The repository README’s request for a new maintainer is a signal to assess, not independent proof of abandonment or inactivity.
