BackstopJS is the better fit when you want to define screenshot scenarios yourself and manage reference images and execution in your own workflow. Chromatic is the stronger fit when you want managed cloud testing and collaborative review, especially if your UI is already documented in Storybook. Both compare rendered interfaces against visual baselines; they differ mainly in how you define tests, run captures, and review changes.

This is a workflow comparison based on the products’ documentation, not a benchmark or hands-on test. The right choice depends on your UI architecture and how much testing infrastructure your team wants to operate.

BackstopJS vs Chromatic: the main differences

Decision area BackstopJS Chromatic
Operating model Open-source framework installed as an npm package. Your team configures captures, runs them, and manages the baseline workflow. BackstopJS README Managed cloud service. Its documentation describes uploading UI or test artifacts and comparing snapshots in cloud browsers. Chromatic visual testing docs
Defining UI states Scenarios can specify URLs, viewports, selectors, readiness conditions, and interaction scripts. BackstopJS README Storybook stories are a natural unit for capturing component states. Chromatic also documents integrations for Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Chromatic quickstart visual testing docs
Baseline review Reference images belong to your project; the documented backstop approve command promotes accepted captures to references. BackstopJS README Snapshots are reviewed in Chromatic’s hosted collaboration workflow. Chromatic visual testing docs
Rendering The README documents Puppeteer as the default engine, Playwright support for Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit, and optional Docker execution to help align environments. BackstopJS README Chromatic documents cloud browser execution with selected browser and viewport combinations. Chromatic visual testing docs
Beyond visual comparison The reviewed documentation centers on screenshot comparison and configured scenario interactions. Chromatic’s product documentation describes visual, interaction, and accessibility testing. Those documented capabilities are not a guarantee that every defect will be detected. Chromatic product docs
Pricing and operating effort The framework is described as an npm package; your team still owns execution and workflow setup. Current maintenance or support commitments are not established here. BackstopJS repository A service with current plans and usage terms to verify directly. Prices and quotas are not established here. Chromatic product docs

How each tool handles visual baselines

BackstopJS: project-owned references

BackstopJS is built around explicit scenarios. You configure what to capture, generate screenshots, compare them with existing references, inspect the differences, and approve intentional changes. This makes the baseline files and approval command part of the team’s own workflow. The documented basic command sequence is backstop init, backstop test, and backstop approve. BackstopJS README

Chromatic: hosted snapshot review

Chromatic compares cloud-rendered snapshots with accepted baselines and provides a hosted review flow for detected changes. For component libraries, Storybook stories offer a convenient way to represent distinct states without building a separate URL-and-interaction scenario for every component. • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which is better for UI regression testing?

Choose BackstopJS if you need control over scenarios

  • Your tests are naturally described as pages or URLs, viewports, selectors, readiness rules, and scripted interactions.
  • You want direct control over reference image files and the command that approves changes.
  • You can maintain browser execution, CI integration, storage, and a review convention for your team.
  • You value configurability and are comfortable evaluating the project’s current support and release status yourself.

BackstopJS’s README documents CI compatibility, reports, browser engines, and optional Docker execution, but the repository asks for a new maintainer or owner. That is a reason to verify current project status before adopting it; it does not establish a release cadence or support commitment. BackstopJS repository

Choose Chromatic if you want managed review

  • Your team already uses Storybook and stories cover the component states that matter.
  • You prefer hosted browser execution and a collaborative review workflow over maintaining those pieces yourself.
  • You use Vitest, Playwright, or Cypress and want to assess Chromatic’s documented integrations.
  • You want to consider its documented visual, interaction, and accessibility testing capabilities together.

Before selecting Chromatic, check its current pricing, quotas, supported configurations, and data or security terms against your requirements. These details can change and are not established by the product pages cited here.

Can Chromatic work without Storybook?

Yes, according to Chromatic’s documentation: it describes integrations for Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress as well as its Storybook workflow. Storybook remains the most direct fit when stories already express the UI states you need to inspect; the available workflow and setup depend on the integration you choose. Chromatic quickstart Chromatic visual testing docs

Do not confuse a prerequisite for one integration with a prerequisite for all of Chromatic. For example, Storybook’s Visual Tests addon lists Storybook 7.6 or later; that requirement applies to that addon, not automatically to every Chromatic integration. Storybook Visual Tests addon

Is BackstopJS self-hosted?

BackstopJS is an npm package that your team configures and runs, and its documented workflow uses project-owned reference images. In that sense, you control the execution and baseline workflow rather than relying on Chromatic’s managed cloud review service. The exact hosting, CI, and storage arrangement is up to your setup; optional Docker execution is documented as a way to reduce rendering differences between environments. BackstopJS README

How to choose without a misleading price or performance comparison

There is no supported performance, false-positive, reliability, or total-cost comparison here. BackstopJS shifts more operational work to your team; Chromatic provides a managed service, but its current price and usage terms need to be checked directly. A useful evaluation is to take a representative set of UI states and determine whether your team prefers maintaining scenarios and references or reviewing hosted snapshots. Do not infer that one is faster, more reliable, or cheaper without measuring your own workflow and checking current terms.

ScreenshotNeo as a complementary alternative

For teams that need screenshot capture through an API rather than a complete visual-regression review workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a direct replacement for BackstopJS or Chromatic’s baseline comparison and review workflows. Its API can capture a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it also removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. A screenshot API can supply images to a process you build, but it does not itself provide the same project baseline approval workflow described above.
